Those were u Yorubas who took Brazilian names as they were in the Brazilian quarters of Lagos (which still exists till today).

The fact that you Igbos can't trace your history does not mean that others suffer from the same misfortune.

Eriokanmi:
Has anyone here read of the Adebisi Idikan and family in Ibadan? Has anyone read of the historic wedding of one of his daughters which shook the entire Yorubaland at that time and atrended by Britons? Had anyone learnt of this man, who once paid the taxes of the entire men in the ibadan city for years to the colonialists in that era? His house was the best and most expensive in ibadan during his day's.

His friend happened to be the father of the first lawyer and first medical doctor in the old oyo empire, including ibadan.

While lagos has always been known for feferities and societal events, cheered by the big and mighty, we can't conclude that more of such great events weren't taking place in towns and cities outside Lagos in that era. During this time, only Lagos Island, Ebute Metta, Yaba and some adjoining places in Apapa formed Lagos while other places were full of water and tick forest. Most of the areas which now form part of lagos used to be part of the Ogun state land. Agege, the entire alimosho, Berger, Ojodu, olowoora, etc, used to be Ogun state even Ketu down to Ikorodu used to be Ogun territories. While some other parts were inhabited by the binis. Some of these areas are the Igas on the island, Oshodin( now known as oshodi). Oshodin is actually an edo word. It doesn't have any meaning in our tribe and language. Some people in order to gain relevance in Lagos gave themselves that name oshodi. Same as Docemo( a white name) now called Dosunmu. Iga Iduganran are bini words. Madam Tinubu was originally from egba. She never had a child to herself. People came.and adopted that name as their surname, just to gain relevance. It's a woman's name. As powerful as she was, one of her husbands (the borno man who was one of her workers) had to bear her name as his last name

Meanwhile, Ibadan, the so called brown roofed city was the most civilised of all cities in west Africa as of then. Those brown roofs were owned by the rich ones who came from far and near to settle in Ibadan the way they do in Lagos today. If your father had an iron sheet on his roof in those days, then he must be rich because during that era when Iron sheets were trending, only about 25% of all the buildings in Nigeria had iron sheets coverings on their roofs. They were mainly covered with bamboos. You hardly see the brown-roofed buildings in several of the present day towns and cities, except in some villages where those who built in the cities during the era also built houses the way many also do today.

While Lagos could be termed a place for societal events, Ibadan had witnessed several of such historical events too, similar to what the OP put up. Back then, Lagos used to be 2nd home of the egbas. Those mentioned in that lagos wedding were originally from egba in what is now called Ogun state. They came and settled here and became part of us. My maternal side ( the Jakandes) came from Kwara, the igbomina area of kwara.

Those praising lagos should remember that a tree doesn't form a forest. Other tribes too contributed immensely towards the development of our great state. I wonder why people hardly talk of the likes of ojukwus and other families. The man who once owned the largest transport company in Africa. The man who once owned limousine and other exotic cars, yet unlettered. God bless Lagos. God bless Nigeria and Nigerians.
Oshodi is not an Edo word but Nupe. More than likely Oshodi impregnated someone in Edo. He has many concubines and bastard children all over the country. But Oshodi is Nupe. It is Oshodi, not Oshodin.

Na you first make reasonable contribution. The tribal clowns up there started their usual brouhaha without making sense.
As far as the society is concerned, these things will always be cuz if they have the money and sociocultural locus, they can choose how to have their events. Our choices are different and personal

It was my dad's client, a Miss Pearse, learnt my dad 60,000 to build a house in the 1970s.

My dad built 2 wings semi-detached duplex of 5 bedroom with 2 sitting rooms each in Alausa. not far from Shoprite.

We moved into a wing in the very early 1980s and he let out the other wing in 1985. He paid off the woman sometime in the 1980s

She passed in the 1990s.

Title: Unveiling the Ancient Secrets of Massage: A Journey through Centuries

In the heart of Africa, where age-old traditions and mystical wisdom intertwine, lies an enigmatic art that has been shrouded in secrecy for centuriesβ€”the art of massage. One man, a seasoned massage therapist, carries within him the profound knowledge he acquired from the revered Kurinan and Ashan, two ancient lineages of healers whose legacy has endured through time.

For over twelve decades, this master of massage has immersed himself in the intricacies of the craft, honing his skills and discovering hidden truths passed down from generation to generation. While the world has seen the rise of female massage therapists, the male practitioners, particularly in Africa, have faced misconceptions and societal pressures that have obscured their true intentions.

https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=AB5stBg1NuDf4OqYeyiG0JLv_mg9xNhXlQ%3A1691185345272&q=BEST+MASSAGE+-+RELAXAZZY100_%28MHSM%29+HOME+SERVICES+AVAILABLE+NIGERIA&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAAXBQQrCMBAAwJPiMxZB0IOw26Sh8baRpQ0kClkp2kuhRt_Q9_hSZ3bb_QFXQrN09duic6Yhqhdcm09rvX878s521ZrfJgTRB2RW5V7gDEUSP3maXoQ4H_Og-QTDPQuolDFeRYFHjolDErjFXkrkP5L-HNVuAAAA&mat=CSg_cwNtZYZa&ved=2ahUKEwj4-4Ou_MOAAxXZUaQEHXwEB08QrMcEegQIHhAH

In African communities, it is not uncommon to encounter prejudices and misunderstandings surrounding male massage therapists. Many have been unfairly branded as "gay" or "sugar boys," falling victim to unfair stereotypes that have clouded the perception of this sacred art. However, it is essential to shed light on the fact that many of these skilled men entered the field out of a genuine desire to heal, rather than the misguided assumptions often associated with their profession.

The journey of this master massage therapist has been one of profound transformation. As he embarked on the path of healing, he discovered that massage is not merely a series of physical manipulations but a profound dance of energies between healer and recipient. With a keen intuition that guides his hands, he delves into the silent language of the body, unveiling knots of tension, unspoken pain, and dormant emotions.

Despite societal pressures and misguided opinions, the master remains steadfast in his mission to honor the sacred legacy of massage. He dreams of a world where massage therapy is regarded not as a frivolous luxury but as an indispensable therapeutic art, accessible to all who seek solace, healing, and renewal.

In challenging the stereotypes that have plagued male massage therapists, the master aspires to cultivate a new generation of practitioners who will uphold the sanctity of this ancient art. By imparting his wisdom and nurturing their talents, he aims to foster a community of therapists that transcends gender norms, embracing the diversity that enriches the profession.

In this tale of rediscovery, the master confronts the misconceptions that have cast shadows upon the art he holds dear. He aspires to change the narrative, not just for himself but for all male massage therapists who harbor a true passion for the healing arts.

As the master continues his journey, he advocates for education and awareness to help the world understand the transformative power of massage therapy. Breaking free from stereotypes, he envisions a future where men and women alike embrace their true callings, unencumbered by societal expectations.

In conclusion, the true secret of massage therapy lies not in its gender association but in its capacity to heal and connect on a profound level. Let us celebrate the art of massage for what it truly isβ€”a timeless expression of compassion, love, and the universal desire to alleviate suffering

You're right. Those names are Portuguese/Brazilian names adopted by the Indigenous Youruba people .
The Portuguese first had contact with Lagos hence they named it so " Lagos" literally meaning 'Lagoon'. because of the expansive water body they saw on Lagos area then.

There are places named Lagos in Portugal and Brazil. You can Google.

Btw, in Portuguese diction, Lagos is pronounced "Lagush" .

Not true. The word Oshodi in nupe could mean a different thing, same way Ife( love) in yoruba also means different things in different tribes. Ife in ibo is different from ife in yoruba.

I used to see Jide too on ibo buses but jide in ibo is different from jide in yoruba. You see. Even in same yoruba, the word Ife has different meanings and pronunciation. Oshodin and oshodi are same pronunciation. The only difference is the "N" . Edos were the first occupants in Lagos and we're not disputing that.not Nupe. All the Lagos Obas used to be taken back to edo for burial until about 150 years ago. Their regalia till date is similar to that of bini chiefs. Most of the names given to compounds on Lagos Island had edo meaning. Oshodin or orshodi and iga aren't yoruba words but that of Edo. That oshodi is also a nupe word doesn't make it relevant in the lagos formation, neither does it mean same thing.

It's also never mentioned in history that nupe were among the early settlers in Lagos. If you had mentioned kwara, kogi and some parts of middle belt regions as places where Nuoe had settled in the early days, I'd have said you're right.

[ I see Rhodes here πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚]Lagos has never been for sale. The assets of these families, these highly prosperous, educated and wealthy Lagos families are still standing till today wink

Here's a very educative read of the Lagos most of you don't know.

TKE Phillips is the first Pharmacist in Nigeria,
Edmund Macaulay (Sir Kitoye Ajasa) is the 1st Nigerian to be Knighted , Chief Christopher Alexander Sapara Williams CMG (14 July 1855 – 15 March 1915) is Nigeria's first Lawyer called to the English bar on 17 November 1879, while Dr JC Vaughan alongside his colleagues formed the Lagos Youth Movement(NYM) which later became Nigeria Youth Movement here in Lagos that fought with other groups for Nigeria's independence.

From Darocha to Bank-Anthony , Shitta-Bey , Randle, Vaughan , Macaulay , Oluwa, Kosoko, Dosunmu , Abina, Alakija, Ashogbon, Ojora, Tinubu , Sasegbon, Sasore etc, Lagos is never and has never been for sale. Proudly one of the descendants of these illustrious families. We are grateful to God for our forebears sacrifices and the virtues of patriotism they handed down to us.
Shout out to these Yoruba families;

What is the meaning of Biafra in Igbo?

Na why them dey lock your mama under bed every monday be that.

What is the correlation with the fact I pointed out and your senseless response? Your mother most be a useless mother for raising a very useless child who lacks respect for other people's mothers....You people are so daft that you assume anybody against your point of view must be an igbo man, I wonder what kind of brain is in your skull.

You can as well call the Portuguese that named Lagos what it is igbos...mugu.

At that time you mentioned, ibos were going about naked in Alaigbo cave.

I dont want to be caught up with this tribal bickering, but the igbo areas had urban centers like aba, onitsha, enugu already developing with well planned town houses and paved roads.

Onitsha and enugu were already cosmo urban centres. Thats not to talk about calabar, that temporarily housed lugards control centre.

Onitsha also has had its own fair share of slave returnee families. Likewise calabar, ph, jos.
