*Okonjo-Iweala to implement findings

Heads may roll in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and among major petroleum products distributors in the country, over the mismanagement of trillions of naira in petroleum subsidy funds.

This follows renewed interest from the Federal Government in the recommendations of a forensic audit report, carried out on the NNPC and its subsidiaries, on the mismanagement of petroleum subsidy resources.

Word had made the rounds  in government circles, that the implementation of the audit report, which was carried out on the corporation, on the directive of President Goodluck Jonathan, in 2010, was being frustrated by some powerful individuals in the oil and gas sector.

However, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, minister of finance and  co-ordinating minister for the economy, told BusinessDay on Wednesday, that government was sure to act on the recommendations of the audit report, and that nobody in government or elsewhere, had instructed her not to implement the said recommendations.

“I have not received any instructions from Mr. President, or any other person for that matter, not to implement the NNPC audit report. Nobody has spoken to me about that, but you know, I just came, and the report was handed over to me by the minister of state and we are going to look at the report, analyse it and come up with the implementation strategies,” she said.

Okonjo-Iweala added that because of the pressing economic issues that the government was handling at the moment, it was difficult for her to sit down to study the document. She however promised to look into the document soon, with the relevant stakeholders, before making the report public.

We are certainly going to make the document public, but first and foremost it is important that we sit down with NNPC and say look, this is what the audit report says about you and we take it from there. It won’t be fair on them to just go to the public on this matter when we have not discussed with the officials of the company audited. We are certainly going to do the right thing,” she said. A senior official of the NNPC told businessDay in Abuja , that they were not afraid of the outcome of the report, and that whoever is found to have misappropriated the Petroleum subsidy funds should be punished.

The official said: “We are not the ones who disbursed the controversial subsidies. It is the ministry of finance and they should be able to tell Nigerians those who they paid what to. We don’t pay contractors. It is the ministry of finance that does that”.
The source who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity said: “From our own end, we have records and we are prepared to make them available to whoever wants them”.

President Jonathan had at the behest of the crisis in the oil and gas sector, directed the forensic auditing of the NNPC and it’s subsidiaries, over the annual bloated expenditure on the subsidies estimated at over N800 billion.

IMHO. 90% of NNPC top managers need to do the walkies; the country has suffered unbridled corruption with NNPC and its parasites sitting atop the dung heap.
This move is most welcome.

This is a good step that has to be quickly implemented before it's frustrated.

The looters should not just walk away or be sacked. They must be brought to book and punished for the economic crimes.

Thats right. I don't see how they can walk away in this heated "fuel subsidy" times. I can see the public baying for blood over this.
