Suggestions On How To Reform The Nigerian Police Force For Better Services by blackpanda: 1:36pm On Oct 24, 2011
In recent times, people have continued to complain as to how corrupt, abusive and just plain incompetent our police force is. What is worse is that it seems no one is doing anything about it. Despite all the allegations against police extortion, we are yet to hear of any officer that has been dragged to court or any commissioner or dpo that has been summarily dismissed on account of corruption and inefficiency.

They say that evil thrives when good people keep their mouth shut. So, instead of complaining i have chosen to drop some suggestions that can help the force improve its services, while protecting the public from abuse in the hands of bad officers. Please feel free to drop your own comments/ suggestions:

1. Whenever there is an arrest, the police officer in charge must identify himself and his badge number to the person being arrested. Failure to do so will make the arrest illegal
2. Any allegations of impropriety or rudeness on the part of an officer must promptly and severely be dealt with
3. Compulsory monthly psychological evaluation tests for all officers
4. Stiff penalties/ strict liability for corrupt or rude officers
5. Better welfare packages for officers
6. Compulsory ettiquette class for all officers
7. Compulsory and continuous legal education for all officers, especially as the law is continuously developing everyday. (Apparently most dont even have a clue of the law they are supposed to protect)
8. Periodic public enlightenment of the rights of individuals under the law
9. Need to re-examine the law with regards to obtaining search/ arrest warrant before operations. (At the moment officers are allowed to arrest people for good reason, bad reason or no reason at all)
10. Establishment of a strict independent and fully autonomous body/institution to checkmate the activities of wayward and corrupt police officers; as well as protect citizens rights.
11. Need to upgrade police buildings to world class standards- especially the holding cells. Even suspects must have a right to good hygiene
12. Encourage and enforce the use of computers, electronic equipment and internet in police activities. As well as sharing of info between police and other security outfits

These are the ones i can think of for now. Please drop your suggestions,
