That's not the issue. The real reason was the Americans frustrated the Russians from that project by not funding it through the IMF and World Bank and threatened the Nigeria government. Six months later, Gen Buhari came to power

That’s what they told you on paper. I’m telling you what I heard from one of the committee members that was present when the Russians gave their report . During Goodluck’s tenure, I asked him again, he laughed and said, it’s just to siphon money. He even made a promise to me, that if it ever works he would ….. This is 2023, still same old story.

Any serious government should know that Ajaokuta is the most useless project ever created by the Nigerian state and if they are serious, they will wash their hands off that unproductive whale of a project
The Russians,Chinese, Americans and even lately the Indians have all at once time or the other cashed out big using that white elephant project

There are two realistic options before this government:
1) Call in all this scrap metals company to come and buy off the place
2) Turn the place into an Agricultural industrial Hub where cash crops like millet, wheat, cassave, legumes, vegetables can be grown and exported
At least for once it would have been used for a productive venture

Lmao

Kayode Fayemi Squandered billions in that sector when he was Minister for Mines and steel under Buhari and left with so many ‘unfulfilled promises to revive Ajaokuta’

35billion? Easy. Threaten Emefiele again. Breath down his neck and press him very well. He will cough up another 4trillion naira. Take your 35billion from that.

All the states should donate or invest 1 billion naira towards reviving the place and all of them become partners or stakeholders or something.

States that are already having trouble repaying their debts and simultaneously providing government services and utilities?

The steel industry needs to be privatised and deregulated as PDP successfully did to NITEL and the telecom sector as well as the petrochemical plants of NNPC in Eleme, Rivers State. Unfortunately, the pseudo progressive/socialist party of Buhari and Tinubu can’t and won’t privatise it, hence the looting continues.

Wouldn't it be wise to lease it out to indigenous investors under a RepairOperateMaintain&Transfer PPP policy to enable its smooth transformation, operation and contribution to the development of the economy WITHOUT THE HEADACHE OF SUSTAINANCE and MAINTENANCE that will be occasioned via the FG ownership?

We voted this FG on a platform of socialism/progressive politics, so how do you expect them to privatise and deregulate the economy?

Buhari's administration failed to do that in 8 years after so much funding
I read on article years back where it was claimed that Clinton's government said that Nigeria cannot be allowed to operate both steel and crude oil at the same time.
Nigeria can never have a working refinery or a working steel mill.
Wish all you like,at most politicians are permitted to use ajaokuta and nnpc as excuse to siphone billions but they will never really work.
The USA and UK do not approve of such .

the Russians agree with Americans and British that a third world country cannot be allowed to run steel and crude at the same time.
That is why they made that bogus statement that it's not viable.

If the revival costs ₦35b, how much will build another one from scratch?

No be dat one dey vex me pass. Dem go just repaint the decayed machines, then carry the money chop.

Na every tenure dem dey allocate money for the revival. Even if na Lazarus, e suppose don wake up.

The light mill is the only section worth revitalising, along with the electricity generation infrastructure. The blast furnace is way obsolete, and stripping of assets by the Indians Obasanjo concessioned the place to doesn't leave much hope that anything can be salvaged. The massive civil service bureaucracy should be sent home. Enough of collecting salaries for doing nothing. Let the rolling mill be activated to feed subsidiary steel spin-off industrial activities. The white elephant should be laid to rest.

35bn in NGN is less than 35m in USD. In what sane country can you use less than 500m to 1 Bn dollars to build something like Ajaokuta? Una go just open mouth waaaaaaa angry
