So the elevator towers are progressing. You can observe the concrete for the 3rd lift being poured. All towers should be completed by the second week of march.

This is fantastic! Well done sir smiley

Always meant to come back to this thread but I always seemed to forget. Two questions which you may have already answered previously (my apologies)
- What is your building envelope made of? Are you going for curtainwall or masonry?
- I believe you mentioned earlier that the building is for a hospital. Are you doing core/shell only or are you also fitting this out as a hospital?

Oh, one more question:
- Do you have any work going on in Naija as well? Would like to discuss more with you on stuff like using alternative building materials in construction back in Naija. Seems like we can't get away from CMU walls and such.

Looking forward to your response. Thanks for the awesome thread!

@Haribo, Thanks for the compliments my man!! The buildiing envelope will be a combination of curtainwall and masonry. More of the former. We will be completing both the core/shell and the fit out of the building. No work in Naija my broda!! abi you get business for me? lol grin grin

The major drivers in naija for material selection are cost, weather and security. It may not be realistic to adopt construction means and methods used here in nigeria without initially improving the socioeconomic environment

Eh, I'm not a dude. But it's OK. There is a certain stereotype for people in the construction industry, so I understand the assumption. Just thought I'd make a quick correction cheesy

Regarding your point about cost, weather & security, I always thought cost and schedule could be reduced if lighter materials like drywall, etc were used on the interior, while maintaining the usual standards for exterior walls for security reasons. I don't have any work back home, but as someone that wants to return to Naija at some point, I like to discuss these things to see what changes or improvements can be made. Naija is a construction boom waiting to happen, and I'd love to jump in at some point.

Keep up with the good work! I'll be checking into see how you're progressing smiley

Imagin what I stay awake to watch on National Geographic and History Channels!
Anybody likes watching MEGASTRUCTURES Dubai etc I stayed awake alot
and was angry I refused to study architecture.

I'm so delighted Nijja man (and woman) dey into MEGASTRUCTURES! Congrats!!!

One question: why don't Nigerians instal HOT PRESSES in their building (plumbing)
instead of having to instal these Italian boilers in their bathrooms
That way hot water will be boiled centrally and hot water will flow anyway you want am!
bathrooms, wash-hand basins etc

Is it also security and socioeconomic reasons

Re: Construction Of A 10 Story Office Building by kez007: 6:03pm On Mar 11, 2012
@Gtrust, Sorry for the delayed response. The question about the hot press, might also be a cost issue. The central water heater requires Domestic hot water piping and domestic cold water piping, while in the italian aplication, there only one water conduit. Any addition required is made locally at the point of connection. another cost impact is electricity. the central water heater is controled by a regulator (like a thermostat) it heats the water to a certain temperature, then shuts it off. when the water cools to below the set temperature it kicks it on again and begins to heat. This means that the heater is operational throughout the day. The basic application allows you to control the use and thus may in the long run reduce electrical cost while compromising convenience. Depends on which one is more important to you, but i this for most nigerian masses, cost rules..

@Haribo, Sorry Oh!,, lol! You must be a very strong woman.. With regard to alternative materials, i have also considered the combination. I think the only limitation would be skilled labour, and availability of materials. Drywall, or plaster board as it is called outside the country is a product of gypsum. At this point, it would have to be imported, while cement blocks, are locally manufactured and easily available. By the way thank you for the encouraging words! wink[quote author=Haribo]

wink wink wink winkKez007,

Thanks for coming back to me.
I agree with you on that description.
There's another method in Cold Europe where the
central heating system is connected to the house
in the sense that whenever you heat the house the
water is also heated.
In the summer, they turn off the thermostat completely
and turn on the 'timer' which heats only the water in the
cylinder for multiples of 30 minutes at set times.
This system (timer) could be used in Nigeria which means:
heat the water for 30minutes or an hour(s) twice a day (or as
required). Whenever I visit home, I just keep wondering...

About the Nigerian construction boom, it's already there!!
Better hurry or you will be very late.
Germans have been there since, then the French joined, Italians
followed and recently you know about the Chinese and LEKKI!
British ofcourse far back.
Remember Alex Ekweme and his boys in Abuja?? They made a killing!

Good stuff you are doing though!

We know that construction is the main part if we are making any building. So in making 10 story office building we should take care of several things in the construction. Because good construction makes the life of building better.

Sir Kez of Watnerby, can you please shed more light on this picture from the shiny material in the roof(think its the object holding the concrete floor in place), why are the columns being rugged undecided If its too much to explain, you could give me links to online resources. Thanks

Very good question...The shiny material is called an air duct made of sheet metal. It is the channel through which air (both hot and cold) is distributed throughout the building. The material on the steel columns is cememtitious fire proofing that is sprayed unto the steel members. It takes 2 to 3 hours for fire to burn through this layer before getting to the steel. As a result, if the building catches fire, there is a 2-3hr period where the structure is still sound. If the fire cannot be contained within this time frame, then it gets to the steel which can melt and eventually result in building collapse. Most times, the fire is contained before that happens.

If you considering buying a house in Lagos, maybe close to Isheri/Magodo, it goes for between 20 and 50 million naira. saliubello2003@yahoo.com is my email for more details. you may also call 08050323434

blink182: thanks for чυя earlier reply, if fire guts a concrete framed building, doesn't it lose structural integrity too. What foundation is the erected frame on? Looks like sand to me.

@blink182 The steel columns are most likely resting on structural piles sent into the ground for support.

Actually reinforced concrete has a higher fire rating than steel. The steel been used for this construction is eventually going to be covered with fireproofing material because if there is a fire, steel can begin to deform and even melt at very high temperatures hence losing its structural integrity and that's why you see the "elevator core" in the left of the picture is built using all round concrete and not steel for safety reasons.

Also @blink182 those 3 concrete structures you see going up are either "elevator core" or "fire stairs". The elevators core is usually all concrete and in really huge buildings they can go up to 2+ feet thick. The fire stairs are also all concrete for safety reasons as well because steel might lose its integrity at very high temps as stated earlier.
