You don't understand when they say hereditary. Hereditary id not ruling house(Being entitled to the throne, once you are a prince) but rather from father to the first son of the king. If the Oba of Benin is removed/died today, his first son will automatically take over. It's not contestable nor do they have any kingmaker that will choose the next king for the kingdom out of numerous princes of the kingdom
yes what if d oba does not have a child and he dies, would dat mean d throne would be empty... Hereditary monarchy is when d crown remains within a certain family... If d oba of benin dies today and he has no heir to d throne, there are other princes that belong to d ruling house and share d same blood that can seat on d throne.... Abeg read more about hereditary monarchy before responding

CHARLES CHUKWUMA SOLUDO CAN NEVER COUGH, WHEN IT COMES TO THAT STOOL(OBI OF ONITSHA). WE CAME FROM THE DIRECT BLOOD LINE OF OBI EZECHIMA (FIVE VILLAGES), WHO WAS OUR FIRST OBI OF ONITSHA. AND WE ARE CALLED UMU EZECHIMA.

The agboenu wicked soul of a governor should be careful with HM Agbogidi Achebe. He does not come close in stature to the reverred monarch.I have never seen a jealous dickhead as Soludo.

I hope he doesn't pick up a fight with Achebe. There are rulers he can't mess around with, Achebe and Eze n'Ukpo are some of them.

If Oba dies today and has no heirs to the throne, his younger brother is next in line to take over. Is not contestable like what is applicable in SW and North. The next in line is already known. A priest can't just wake up and say he want to contest for Obaship as it's done in Ife, Kano, Sokoto, etc. So know the difference. Just like it's done in England.

The truth is that soludo can do it, but that will be the end of apga and his political relevance in nigeria, Obi of onitsha is love by all, unlike soludo that is fighting in all front, he has issue with Peter Obi, the traditional rulers, he is performing far below as expected, people are even regretting why they voted him in...

He should resolve this amicably, No political gladiator has ever survive in Anambra state fighting Obi of onitsha, you can use Ngige as a case study

Nobody will ever conceive the thought of dethroning the Agbogidi. Ndi Onicha will not allow such thing, anyways.

Soludo needs to thread cautiously. He is threading a dangerous path. Anambra traditional council has a lot of influence.

Then, he can just wait till after he wins the second term and dethrone him... Shikena

If Kano didn't erupt in flames with the dethroning of Sanusi, nothing will happen if same is done to Obi

He can't
It's hereditary like OBA of Benin
It's not Kano
Soludo has the constitutional power to dethrone the Obi but the governor won't be courageous to do it because the Obi is more influencial in Anambra than the governor. Soludo will have a big problem if he do it.

GerogeI:
I agree with Obi of Onitsha.

But more importantly,
There is no thing traditional about igwe's and obi's in Igboland of which Anambra is part of.

They were started by British invaders as a means to subdue the people, Igbo had no chiefs, talk less of warrant Chiefs, nor Kings.

Nze and Ozo were socio political Societies, with Pyramid structures that allowed several people to provide leadership based on their level of title in the society. It is similar to a parliamentary government, with no Prime minister, only the leadership of the House. There morality and court were provided by Nri theocracy through the transfer of Ofo!

Soudo- can we stop deceiving ourselves. Do away with all the Igwes and Obi and replace them with the people's congress (which we have as town unions already) led by three elected persons forming a trinity to be known as Mayor or some igbo name 'Izu'. Trinity so they countercheck each other. Pass a law that establishes them as an extension of the state Government, but synchronize with Local government ment laws by electing them as councillors. This will make for faster more people oriented development, and also force the judicious use of local Goverment funds as they can be shared for community administration by the state Government irrespective of who answers local Government Chairman. You make the non performing Local Govt. Chairmen redundant.
Una no get respect for anything in that region.

Any governor can remove any traditional ruler. They have the constitutional power to do so.

You see, the fact is that all the kingdoms and societies in what is now Nigeria were conquered by the colonialists and the colonialists handed power to the Nigerian state and this means that the state (represented by the governor) has power over all the monarchs in Nigeria.

This is why all recognised first class traditional rulers (including the Oba of Benin and the Obi of Onitsha) receive their staff of office from the governor.

However, there's something else you need to consider. A traditional ruler might be loved by his people and removing him might lead to problems.

But still, there have been governments in Nigeria that have braved riots and gone ahead to remove traditional rulers. Let's look at some examples.

Sir Siddiqi Abubakar was the Sultan of Sokoto from the 1930s till 1988. My dad used to ask, "Why are they making this man suffer"? That's because he was very old. You should have seen him at the time that Buhari or Babangida visited him. He was old and infirm. He couldn't deliver a speech. He would tell someone (standing beside his throne) what he wanted to say and the person would then say it out loud for everybody to hear. My dad said that they should have allowed him to rest.

He and Ahmadu Bello had trained a lot of people that later became senior civil servants and military leaders and they all revered him. He was the most powerful traditional ruler in Nigeria at that time.

Sir Siddiqi died in 1988 and everybody expected that his son, Mohammed Maccido, would be turbaned as the new Sultan, but shockingly, the government announced that Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki, a member of the Donation Circuit (and a friend of Babangida), had been selected as the new Sultan. There were massive riots in Sokoto. Lots of soldiers and policemen were brought in to stop the riots and many people died.

Still, Dasuki reigned as Sultan until 1996 when General Abacha deposed him and installed Mohammed Maccido, the son of Sir Siddiqi, as Sultan. There was jubilation in Sokoto when Dasuki was removed.

naptu2:
I've found the video.

First a short recap of my old posts.

Aminu Kano was a legend in Kano and the people loved him because he fought for the Talakawas, that is, the poor illiterate people of Kano. His party in the First Republic was called the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) and his party in the Second Republic was called the People's Redemption Party (PRP).

Abubakar Rimi won the 1979 Kano governorship election on the platform of the PRP. The people expected that he would form a government of the Talakawas, but instead, he formed a government that was completely filled with university graduates. They expected that he would launch poverty alleviation projects, but instead he set up a state radio station and newspaper.

Expectedly, he soon fell out with his godfather, Aminu Kano, because he was not following Aminu Kano's philosophy of taking care of the Talakawa.

However, in order to show that he was not one of the elites, that is, the technocrats and aristocrats, Abubakar Rimi launched an attack on the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Addo Bayero. He suspended the emir in 1981. This led to massive riots in Kano and the radio station and newspaper were attacked and burnt.

In this video, Governor Rimi was talking about the Emir of Kano. He was speaking to an NTA Ibadan correspondent during a state visit to Oyo State.

(Note, Governor Rimi decamped from the PRP to Nnamdi Azikiwe's NPP ahead of the 1983 election. However, Kano belonged to Aminu Kano and the PRP candidate, Alhaji Bakin Zuwo, who was a real Talakawa, won the election).

Let me tell you this, my friend. I will advise you to stop talking about this Emir of Kano. The way you press people and the way our political opponents want to regard the Emir, that is not the way we regard the Emir.

As far as we are concerned, we the elected government of Kano State, as far as we are concerned, as far as I, the governor of Kano State is concerned, the Emir of Kano is nothing, nothing, nothing but a public officer.

I read in the papers that somebody said I said he is a civil servant. I never said so. I never said he is a civil servant. He is not a civil servant. He is a public officer, who is holding a public office and who is being paid from public funds and whose appointment is at the pleasure of the governor of the state and who can be dismissed, removed, interdicted, suspended if he commits an offence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T81ZCXz76jU

I repeat (for emphasis), Rimi lost the election.

Traditional rulers have been barred from getting involved in partisan politics since the advent of military rule. However, in 1991, the late Oba of Benin, Oba Erediauwa, made it very clear that he was supporting Chief John Odigie Oyegun to be governor of Edo State and that he did not want Lucky Igbinedion to be governor. Oyegun eventually won the election.

Lucky Igbinedion also contested the 1999 Edo governorship election and once again the Oba made it clear that he didn't want Igbinedion to win (he was supporting Lucky Imasuen of the APP). This time, the military governor, Navy Captain Anthony Ibe Onyearugbulem was not happy about the Oba's incursion into partisan politics. He suspended the Oba of Benin and proposed that the chairmanship of the Edo Council of Chiefs should be rotated among traditional rulers in the state.

However, the Palace later issued a statement that the Oba was not involved in partisan politics. Many senior people in society also mediated in the dispute and the governor rescinded the suspension and apologised to the Oba.

Soludo cannot dethrone him, he will only cease to recognise him as the Igwe of Neni from the government, till his tenure passes. Na Neni people choose abi selected and enthroned their Igwe. The government can choose to recognize him or not. Kingship is a different game in Igboland. Most Igwe's in Igboland operate form their respective private houses (palaces) and not town owned. Only few of them, like the Obi of Onitsha have town owned palaces.
