This is the story of a weapon system, manufactured by a seceding African country that wiped off over, 4,000 military personnels and over 100 vehicles in one strike in 1968 during the Nigerian Biafran Civil War.

Ogbunigwe, also known as the Ojukwu Bucket, stands as a testament to ingenuity and innovation in warfare. Developed and mass-produced by the Republic of Biafra during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970, Ogbunigwe comprised a series of advanced weapons systems including command detonation mines, improvised explosive devices, and rocket-propelled missiles. These lethal armaments were instrumental in reshaping the dynamics of the conflict, showcasing the remarkable capabilities of indigenous weaponry.

Amidst the onset of hostilities, Biafran armed forces faced significant challenges due to a scarcity of arms and ammunition compared to their Nigerian counterparts. In response, Biafran scientists, notably from the University of Biafra (now University of Nigeria, Nsukka), spearheaded the Research and Production (R.A.P.) Agency of Biafra. Led by Colonel Ejike Obumneme Aghanya, this agency sought to bridge the gap by developing an indigenous arms industry. The result was the birth of Ogbunigwe, a formidable arsenal ranging from grenades to surface-to-surface missiles.

The effectiveness of Ogbunigwe was unparalleled. Mines and warheads boasted a lethal range of up to 800 meters, capable of devastating entire enemy companies with a single explosion. Rocket-propelled versions showcased a missile range of 8 kilometers, proving instrumental in neutralizing enemy infantry and armored vehicles alike.

Ogbunigwe's impact on the battlefield was profound. It played a pivotal role in decisive engagements such as the Abagana ambush, where Biafran forces inflicted significant losses on the Nigerian 2nd Division. Rocket missiles targeted a Nigerian convoy of about 100 vehicles and 6,000 personnels, triggering a massive explosion that decimated armored vehicles and wiping over 4,000 of the personnels, marking one of the war's deadliest single losses for the Nigerian army.

The significance of Ogbunigwe extended beyond its military prowess. It symbolized a triumph of indigenous innovation, challenging conventional perceptions of warfare and highlighting the resourcefulness of Biafran scientists and engineers. Despite the eventual outcome of the conflict, Ogbunigwe remains a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of those who sought to defend their homeland through technological innovation and strategic prowess.

4000, why not add one more zero at the back lol.

At best it will kill a company of soldiers. A company has anywhere from a few dozen to 200 soldiers.

A weapon that could kill 4,000 soliders at once in Africa in the 1960 would have won that African country or rebel an African war.

It was more than 4000

The Nigerian Army 2nd Division had about 6000 personnel commanded by Murtala Mohammed .

Only about 200-300 survived

The US described the Nigerian army then as inept .

Murtala Mohammed should have been court-martialled and executed by firing squad or at least jailed for losing so much men

But only in Nigeria will such a failure remain in active duty and later go on to become head of state .

The rocket struck a fuel tanker and caused a catastrophic explosion which spread burning fuel to the other trucks transporting ordnance, explosives and other fuel trucks

It was an entire division on the move and they had a large amount of stuff in the convoy

For those who don't, ogbunigwe wiped out the second division of the Nigerian military in Abagana, it was instrumental to the stoppage and decimation of the first division of the Nigerian military.
Major Jonathan Uchendu with a small troop of Biafran soldiers ambushed the whole second division of the Nigerian military backed by soviet union and british military and wiped out the entire division, leaving only the GOC of the division badly wounded and traumatized with a handful of soldiers to go back and tell the story in Lagos.

The only other military that achieved something similar is Alexander the great in the battle against Persian army and king David of Israel in the battle against Goliath and the philistines . No other military in the world has achieved this feat, not even Ukraine with all the world backing has achieved this.

Biafra military was really very versatile and agile.if Biafra had the weapon, Nigeria would have been history. The Biafrans also decimated the same murtala Mohammed and his 2nd division when he attempted to invade onitsha the first time , more than 5000 nigerian soldiers were lost trying to invade onitsha, second time he invaded onitsha successful and his soldiers looted and burnt down the onitsha market, only for Biafra military to regroup and wipe out more than 5000 soldiers of the second division during the fight for onitsha causing murtala to flee to Lagos.

Sometimes I ask my self what really could the Nigerian military had done in the battle field if Biafra had the ammunition and arsenal

Nigerian army are in convoy with their explosive shells, artillery, bombs, creates of grenade and series of tankers with fuel supplies all in a single formation and convoy.
so in your mind you think a bomb explosion with huge shock wave won't cause serial catastrophe on that their formation or convoy triggering their own explosives to help the honorable scene?

That Abagana ambush was the third of such incident of Biafran soldiers facing General Murtala Mohammed and his 2nd division of the Nigerian. In all 3 scenarios the 2nd division of the Nigerian military was routed , decimated and destroyed with Murtala Mohammed and few soldiers managing to escape, I can bring information from Dawodu.com and other verifiable sources if this becomes heavily doubted.
The Biafrans were just too good , agile and strong for the Nigerian military, the battle of OAU that gave Adekunle PTSD and Obasanjo groin injuries is still there
The Biafrans reduced the whole 3rd marine command from 33000 to less than 500 men , this was before the operation tail wind and the final negotiation to halt the war.

The only war strategy Nigeria had was blockade of vital medical from red cross and sabotaging farms ,

You are quite right I read in some publications how desperate British government became, so much that they were frantically doing everything unethical to make sure Biafra lost. Including backing the use of unorthodox and unapproved fighting techniques of bombing civilians, hospitals, markets, homes. The supplied Nigeria enough weapons to wipe out the population of Nigeria 3 times and were up and against their parliament who opposed their participation in the war
