We can't build a democracy on NTA and all these jeun jeun media, forever tied to the apron strings of looters and pretenders. We need loud, bold, independent media organizations. I see no other way. Ignorance ti poju! |

U must remember that the media is a business. Now next has gone underground as a result of its expose on the petroleum minister and other corrupt leaders. The question is are Nigerians willing to financially support papers like next to do a thorough job? Now NEXT is on its own.Forced to swallow the bitter pill of financial failure. Are u ready to back them?Newspaper publishing goes beyond show,it is also business. |

CHIMSKY:I couldn't have said it better. Also Nigerians seem inured to corruption We love the exposes so as to partake in current gossip But lack the energy to tackle the culprits and in most cases celebrate them as having made it Ironic, aint it? Most just end and start on the pages of papers |

I think the problem with 234Next was that they created a traditional news organisation, without taking into consideration that newspapers all over the world are finding it tough. They could have focused on just an online presence to start with. This would have saved money on printing and distribution. Unfortunately, they really seem to be out of money even for their online operations as the front page is full of recycled international news; something almost all readers in Nigeria and abroad can also get from CNN, The Times and the likes. |

Print media is not longer as profitable. The internet is taking over. As for those you are debasing 234next because of its financial woes, you have to realize that Nigerian businesses do not advertise on media outlets that challenge the status quo. That's because most Nigerian businesses large enough to advertise on print media depend a lot on government patronage. They are not going to advertise on a media outlet that challenges the status quo. The Nigerian media is a joke. I still remember how they refused to air tv ads by Buhari and Shekarau. As for Shekarau they told him that they will only air his ad if NTA creates with their cameras. Nigerians are so used to being belittled and abused that it seems that we are used to it. It will take a lot to get the Nigerian people enraged. |

We started with the basic premise that we would provide news and informed opinion fairly and accurately to the public, based on the best judgment of the editors and none other, uninfluenced by money, political or other affiliation. all newspapers always start out on that premise. It just never lasts long before they succumb. |

Honestly, it is sad that such a good paper has gone under. That paper wrote the best editorial commentry in Nigeria. It ventured into areas where angels feared to tread in the course of its stay in the Nigerian market. The paper strove to report news as they were no matter whose ox is gored. Contrary to some of the points raised here, I think the paper failed because of its stance to provide news and informed opinions fairly and accurately, uninfluenced by money, political or other affiliations. The paper’s stance affected advert placements as the salutatory advertisements heaping praises on politicians and Nigeria’s elite that fill other publications never made it into its editions. The paper and its publisher, Dele Olojede have continued to win awards from within and outside the shores of the country. Last year, Olojede was ranked The 66th Most Creative Person in Business worldwide by the Fast Company magazine. He also won The Ethics in Business Award at the World Forum for Ethics and Business in Belgium. Few days after stopping the printing his paper, he was announced as the winner of the fourth annual John P. McNulty Prize. A committee of judges including Madeline Albright, Olara Otunnu, Shashi Tharoor and Anne McNulty selected Olojede in recognition of his ground breaking work to deliver unbiased information to the Nigerian public, demand government transparency and advance journalistic standards in the country. The jury was inspired by his courage and conviction in forging new ground, and leading his country toward a better future. The prize money for the Award is $100.000. Thank God the paper is still available online. I pray NEXT bounces back in print |
