C’River Speaker Accused of Channeling Aides' DTA of N20M for Personal Gains (Part 1)

In the heart of Cross River State, a shadow looms over the House of Assembly, casting doubt on the integrity of its Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem.

Investigation reveals a troubling tale of alleged financial misconduct, as aides claim they have been deprived of their Duty Tour Allowance (DTA) since June 2023, amounting to about N20million.

Despite multiple journeys undertaken in and outside the state, it is purported that only the privileged few (securities and drivers) receive DTA. This allowance, conventionally meant to be granted before embarking on official duties, is allegedly delayed for these select individuals, leading to disputes and discontent within the assembly.

Speaking with one of the unsung heroes of the assembly, a sweeper who requested anonymity, shed light on the dire situation. The individual, tasked with maintaining the Speaker's office cleanliness, shared shocking details of how aides, beyond security and drivers, have reportedly been denied a single Kobo in DTA since last year. Even the Speaker's Chief of Staff, Mr. Anakan Neku, has reportedly hit a wall in his attempts to address the matter.

The anonymous sweeper exposed a distressing revelation that the Speaker, known for his stringent financial habits, allegedly signs off on DTA for all aides but fails to disburse any funds. Instead, these funds are allegedly diverted towards building a lavish structure around FAITHPLANT, CICC, Calabar. Such financial irregularities raise questions about the Speaker's commitment to the welfare of his aides amidst economic hardships.

The DTA for the period from June 2023 to February 2024 is expected to total around N15,000,000 to N20, 000,000. Each aide is supposed to receive N10,000 per night, and considering journeys lasting 4 to 5 days, you can estimate the overall allowance accordingly.

Further inquiries uncovered a disparity in treatment during a budget presentation by Governor Sen. Prince Bassey Otu. While the Governor generously gifted 1 million Naira to the Assembly aides, it is claimed that the Speaker did not share a single Kobo. When concerns were raised in the aides' WhatsApp group, the Speaker purportedly quashed any discussion on the matter, silencing dissent within his ranks.

The gravity of these allegations demands a thorough investigation into the financial practices of the Cross River State House of Assembly. The public deserves transparency, accountability, and fair treatment for those who serve in the assembly.
