The Nigerian Ports Authority, Onne Port Complex, said it has received a big vessel, ‘Kota Cempaka’ with 566 containers.

Announcing the development in a statement on Saturday, the management of NPA, said the vessel sailing under the flag of Singapore, has a length overall of 300 meters.

It added that the successful berthing of the vessel demonstrated the agency’s capacity and readiness for large ship calls.

The statement read in part, “The vessel christened Kota Cempaka with International Maritime Organization number 9638965 sailing under the flag of Singapore shipped in 566 containers,”

The Managing Director of the NPA, Mohammed Bello-KoKo, said, “This is a confirmation of the capacity and readiness of eastern ports for vessel traffic

“This also shows that our investments in channel navigability and security are yielding results. We will sustain our advocacy for the patronage of the eastern ports,” Bello-Koko said.

According to Bello-Koko, Onne Port had earlier berthed, Maersk Stadelhorn and MV Lady Jane with 300m and 295m LOA respectively, “a development that shows that the port is poised to sustain its growing fortunes,”

Situated on the Bonny River Estuary along Ogu Creek in Rivers State, Onne Port Complex is the first port of its kind in Nigeria that operated the landlord port model devised to encourage private sector participation in the port industry.

Similarly, in August 2020, the Nigerian Ports Authority announced the berthing of the biggest container vessel to ever dock at a Nigerian port.

The General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Mr. Adams Jatto, announced in a statement in Lagos.

Jatto said the Maerskline Stardelhorn vessel, with a length overall of 300 metres, and a width of 48 metres was received at the Federal Ocean Terminal, Onne, Rivers State, at 16:20 hours on August 15.

This is not news, it have been happening in other countries including Benin republic. What we want to hear is ship loaded with 566 containers of export goods left Nigeria.

Except oil products, the only things we can export in these huge sizes are agricultural products.

Unfortunately, the people we call leaders are too obsessed with oil and gas to be exploring the possibility of exporting cash crops to earn FX. They are terribly myopic and shamelessly incompetent.

Either way, it's a good thing that an eastern seaport has the capacity to berth such vessels.

Tinubu recently released billions of Naira to revamp the Tincan and Apapa ports but neglected the ports in the SE and SS

Revamp the Ports in Calabar, Warri and Onne.

And Dredge the River Niger.

Stop forcing everyone to Lagos. Don't be greedy and selfish at the same time.

This is another evidence there is a functioning seaport in the SS which is very close to the SE.

To whom it may concern...

Please let's desist from the propaganda "that the federal government is deliberately making the seaport in some regions except the SW redundant"

Please let's desist

It's a mixed feeling for people of Rivers State. We were in sorrow for the huge loss of lives and properties yesterday. My condolences remains to the good people of Onne Rivers State. As for the news. It's commendable and it reduces stress on Lagos port and environs.

You guys have victim mentality always blaming tinubu well it's not tinubu's fault other ports in nigeria are irrelevent. The best way to deal with you is to let you know that the fact that calabar, warri and other ports are abandoned is not tinubu's fu*cking problem.

There is a functioning port then why has it not been functioning? Who are you guys fooling with your emotional blackmail?
You can't be a persecutor and the victim.

You should be advising against the propaganda that always seeks to rationalize the redundancy of Eastern ports.
