Could someone please explain to me who and what caused the first Nigerian military coup? It seems most of the people in the govt at the time were pan-africanists, where were serious about making Nigeria a better place. |

The crisis in the then western Nigeria led the first coup. The Balewa led administration could not help matters and the young military boys felt they will do better. In short, the 1965 western Nigerian imbroglio was the real cause. |

Andre Uweh: Why are some of you so hell bent on being disingenuous? In any case, we will go through the details again. It appears you want a refresher course and I will duly oblige. I will be back later. |

Sanusi Lamio Sanusi said The Yoruba elite were the first, in 1962, to attempt a violent overthrow of an elected government in this country. In 1966, it was the violence in the West which provided an avenue for the putsch of 15th January. After Chief Awolowo lost to Shagari in 1983 elections, it was the discontent and bad publicity in the South-West which led to the Buhari intervention. |

The Yoruba elite were the first, Why didnt you all just use the parliament to secede? I dont understand, it's a federation its supposed to have been made up of autonomous nations anyway. |

PointB: What is the meaning of avenue in that phrase above? Does it not imply opportunity? Let us look at the definitions for avenue; please see below av·e·nue [av-uh-nyoo, -noo] Show IPA noun 1. a wide street or main thoroughfare. 2. a means of access or attainment: avenues of escape; avenues to greater power. 3. a way or means of entering into or approaching a place: the various avenues to India. Secondly, Sanusi is not even well versed in Nigerian history. For instance, how does a dispute amongst the members of the Action Group translate into a violent ovethrow of the government when it is a known fact that Balewa and Zik used the NCNC to deny the AG a democratic right by starting the brouhaha in the Western House in the first place? |
