Project Can Anyone Help by pierre(m): 8:30am On Sep 24, 2007
Hi guys,

I'm a final year physics student student need help from you guys. my project is to build a system that will help the student to know their final semester result via sms. it designed using Microsoft Access for its database and Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 as interface.

my question is, is there any chance that Microsoft VB and Microsoft Access can be used together to upload data through GSM ( global system for system communication ) module?

Google your question to get the best help from those who have already done something like that. Nothing Wrong with using VB for your project

Pierre,

Explain in detail how students will request their results i.e.

MS-Access DB -> VBA API -> SMS Gateway -> GUI to student -> Student phone

Explain better and we can make suggestions.

Can you use any technology or do you have to use only Access & VB?

pierre,

The reason I asked if it is only MS-Access & VB you will use is because technologies from microsoft tend to tie you down in so many ways (I won't even go into that). I strongly believe open-source is the future and I think you can use open source technologies to accomplish your project.

Here is my 2 cents

1. You need an SMS gateway (Don't let the term scare you) that will actually push the content (results) to students cellphones when requested. Now, you don't need to go and buy $$$$ software to get this to work, that is where open-source comes in. Kannel (www.kannel.org) is a simple, SMS & WAP server. Setting this up just requires a regularly phone(with a cell number) that can plug into the USB or serial port of a computer (with a few configuration of course) and bang!, you got yourself an SMS server.

2. You need a database ( can be any MS-Access, MySQL, MS-SQL) to store students results in. I prefer MySQL, why? - it's free and it integrates easily with the programming language that will actually pull the data from the database, strip it and parse it for the SMS gateway and deliver the content to the student mobile phone.
