Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State personally led a team of officials to arrest five commercial motorcyclists (Okada) and commuter bus drivers found driving against  the traffic in Apapa area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, yesterday.
The motorcyclists who were apprehended for driving against traffic on the Apapa Bridge included one Haruna Umaru who drove a motorcycle with registration number FS 820 LG and Idris Isa who was caught driving against the traffic from Ijora on his way to Apapa.
Others who fell into the dragnet were Sani Buba with motorcycle registration number Z 315 LSD who claimed to be the Vice Chairman of Motorcycle Operators Association of Lagos State, Victoria Island chapter.
Also apprehended on the Apapa bridge for riding against the traffic was Aminu Oshe with  motorcycle registration number QL 15 APP and Mr. Egiamalo Amos, a store assistant in the Ajah plant of P.W. Nigeria Limited who was arrested for driving his vehicle with registration number QS 130 EPE against the traffic.
Fashola and his team made the arrests while going to commission a 60-flat housing estate built by the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) at Apapa. The governor pointed out that the difficulties encountered by residents of Apapa were being exacerbated by Okada riders, trailers and tankers.
The governor who hinted that a policy was in the offing to address and deal decisively with the problem added: “what we see and experience clearly is a failure of agencies of the Federal Government to do their work and they manage the port at the expense of the lives of the residents.
“Just recently, it was announced that N188 billion was generated from this port; but the question is, how much of it was spent in Lagos? How much of it was spent or committed to building rail that will evacuate cargo from the port?”
He however advised residents: “As I have said to all those who care to listen, if Okada is a problem to you, stop using it; because it is a business and if you don’t patronise it, it will leave you alone.”

The chaos in apapa is unprecedented. Federal goverment alongside lagos goverment port operatoprs importers, private sector and all concerned interest should address the mess on the express way. its crazy and the approach should be multidisciplinary even import regulations and decongestion, a railway track or even diverting goods to other ports in the south,

only then would sanity return on that route, spending 7 hours on a route that shouldnt last 40 mins is totally unacceptable

Good news. Any person that drives against traffic deserves to be beaten, and have their motor cycles / cars seized AND crushed. That would send out a clear message to other intending offenders.

Read it on the 'Vanguard website. Someone suggested a non-custodial sentence which I quite agree with but washing toilets should be reserved for those who mess up the environment. There are many cost saving jobs for traffic offenders. How about serving as traffic wardens chained to the road side for good measure, sweeping of streets, road repairs or chain gang work building a rail line that such a port area badly needs.

I tell you the vices department of the anti-social network is a multi-billion naira industry that can surpass that of allocations and taxes. However to fine these bike men or auction their equipment will be to lock them in a crime spiral thus they should subsidise government instead.

In developed countries, the citizens are well behaved and obeys traffic rules, they dont need a governor to arrest erring motorists, but here in Nigeria, full of crazy people.

I can imagine the Mayor of London or New York hitting the motorways catching traffic offenders. LOL

Fashola can lead police to arrest robbers and burglars - fine, but to leave his office to arrest people driving against traffic, then, that can only happen in Nigeria.

I do believe Okada days in the state of Lagos are numbered, it's just a matter of time.

Many countries didn't didn't provide cars to all their citizens before getting rid of them and if I might add a lot of countries don't have okada and they still didn't give cars to their citizens.
