S/East PDP Endorses Fuel Subsidy Removal

After extensively reviewing the proposal by President Goodluck Jonathan to remove fuel subsidy with effect from next year, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Southeast zone yesterday endorsed the idea insisting that it was in the best interest of Nigerians.

The party however insisted that the anticipated revenue that would be generated from the subsidy removal should be channelled towards the construction of the second Niger Bridge; Enugu – Port-Harcourt expressway; Enugu – Abakaliki Road, ecological problems in the zone as well as the myriad of challenges facing the south east.

In a press statement issued at the end of the party’s Zonal Working Committee meeting held at his headquarters in Enugu and signed by the National Vice chairman, south east, Chief Olisa Metuh, the party noted that the removal of the subsidy would ultimately benefit Nigerians in the long run.

While urging members of the National Assembly from the south east to fully support the proposal, the party said the removal of the subsidy would generate substantial revenue that would galvanise the economy which could be used for capital projects and massive infrastructural development in line with the present administration’s transformational agenda.

The party also noted that the removal of subsidy would create more employment by promoting the construction of indigenous refineries which would in turn discourage the importation of petroleum products and would eventually reduce and stabilise the prices of such products.

It also noted that the proposed removal would directly benefit and impact positively on the lives of the people as against the present situation where few individuals are immensely benefiting from it at the expense of the majority of Nigerians.

How foolish are these S/East PDP members/hawks to think the First Niger bridge overhaul and the much needed second Niger bridge would see the light of the day following subsidy removal

Sometimes I really do not know what to make of the S/East and thier leaders!

Precisely !! We have to begin seeing the big picture in Nigeria. Only traitors, elitists and anti-people individuals will back the removal of subsidy from a Government not even minimally interested in leading by example and making cost-cutting sacrifices that will benefit the nation. In Nations with decent leaders, the effort to rescue affairs must begins with the wealthiest and most opportuned making patriotic and selfless sacrifices for the sake of their nation !!! It is simply not right or ethically decent to ask those already overburdened , because of poverty, to make sacrifices while every aspect of Governance (120-170 attending CHOGM jamboree in Australia) is about wanton waste and obscene profligacy !!!!

GEJ is a wicked person and those who support him blindly are very wicked souls too.

Why dont you "lay off" shameless bigotry for even a second? What fence is anyone sitting on other than that created by your mind that is too fried with bigotry? The "fence" imagined in your bigoted mind will always mean you create lies to give the dog a bad name and hang it !!! The ACN ,and thus the SW, has already made it clear they are against the removal of subsidy . That is absolutely the right stance to take for anyone who understands that a blessed Nation like Nigeria should not be talking of subsidy removal , as a way to support capital spending, while we have senators earning 4 times the $400,000. 00 salary of the world's most powerful man in Barack Obama !!!

We should not be talking of subsidy removal while the Government is in bed with "enemies of progress"and promoting them into economic teams, like Otedola,  and pandering to corruption and "business as usual" practices via failure to privatise our refineries and aggressively pursue what will solve this mess once and for all i.e Nigeria refining it own natural crude endowment ASAP !!!!!

Every policy of GEJ is designed to keep the "owners of Nigeria" in charge. You would note this also if you were not a blind bigot determined to support your "brother" blindly. I thank God cyberspace has search functions so that everyone can see some of us have nothing but condemnation for our woeful kinsmen such as OBJ, Aloa Akala, Gbenga Daniel, Oyinlola, Agagu, Oni et al in confirmation that we still understand how good leadership is superior to everything else.

Nigeria: ACN Kicks Against Petroleum Subsidy Removal

Ike Abonyi And Jaiyeola Andrews

8 November 2011

Abuja — Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) at the weekend, kicked against the proposed removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

The party noted that the move was the "handiwork of those propelled by the philosophy of the 'Washington Consensus' of rolling back the frontiers of the state."

A statement issued in Lagos, by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said ACN equally condemned the reduction of the subsidy removal debate to a purely fiscal issue, without considering the responsibility of the government to improve the lives of the people through prudent management of state resources.

"Primarily, the basic objective of any fiscal policy is to improve the living conditions of the people through poverty reduction and the provision of welfare services. The removal of subsidy must therefore go beyond the cheap argument of improving the solvency of the government.

"To reduce the responsibility of the government to its citizen to naira and kobo tokenism is tantamount to abdicating responsibility, and this has far reaching consequences not only on the sustainability of our democracy but the continued existence of the nation as a unified entity," the party said.

It pointed out that government's argument that the subsidy benefits some members of a faceless cartel will begin to have meaning only if and when the government names the beneficiaries and tells Nigerians why they cannot be stopped from fleecing the state.

According to ACN, the only reason the issue of fuel subsidy has continued to recur was because Nigeria imports petroleum products for domestic consumption, warning that so long as importation continues, the problem that the government sets out to confront would continue like a recurring decimal.

The party noted that the template being used by the government, which puts the pumpprice per litre of petrol at N144.70, instead of the current price of N65, was fraught with inaccuracies and amounts to making the ordinary Nigerian to pay for the inefficiency of relevant government agencies.

"In any case, why should Nigeria, with huge crude oil deposits, have to import refined products? Why should Nigerians pay for the resources so bestowed on them by God through their noses? Why is the price of products, even among importer/exporter nations higher in Nigeria? The answer lies in the crude, prebendal, corruption-ridden state system that we run in this country.

"For example the pump price of petrol in Iran is N58.40, N30.66 in Kuwait, N32.12 in Qatar, and N17.52 in Saudi Arabia while it is a meagre N5.84 in Venezuela. In Egypt pump price of petrol is N46.72, while it is N39.42 in Bahrain. It is N135 in the USA for high premium inclusive of all state and federal taxes," ACN averred.

The party, however, proposed the establishment of modular refineries with a total of 280,000 barrels per day refining capacity in nine cities-Gusau, Enugu, Ibadan, Kano, Makurdi, Maiduguri, Lagos, Auchi and Gombe, in addition to reviving the existing ones.

As usual, they take their position out of selfish political ambition and never that that concerns the ordinary man on the street! S/East leaders have shown by their actions in recent times that they really never care about their region but only their pockets!

Can you point out what the S/East leaders have been able to extract from the present regime for the region? All projects currently being completed/abandoned in that region were initiated by Obj and Yar'dua and these clowns who call themselves leaders have done nothing to mount perssure on the FG to get them completed in record time and begin new projects!

@Gbawe, Very well said!

How about these clowns coming out with a communique/lobby to urge the FG to fix the erosion ravaging the whole of the S/East?
Re: South-east PDP Endorses Fuel Subsidy Removal by PointB: 9:24pm On Nov 27, 2011
Completing project initiated by your predecessor is as good as initiating one of your own. Initiating project just to have your name stick to it without any intention of completing it has been the bane of Nigeria. I would be more than happy if GEJ completes just 20% of over 2000 abandoned projects in Nigeria.

My brother, how about they come out , in showing they believe in Nigeria, to insist , as many are doing, that GEJ's Government , first and foremost, publish what is spent on subsidy and who the beneficiaries are? If you can't even show, as the all powerful Government, those you claim are holding Nigeria to ransom with the subsidy racket , why should anyone believe you that subsidy exist in the first place let alone back you blindly to "remove" it? Is it not obvious that some are derelicting their civic duty to their nation?

That is the beauty of possessing a neutral mind. You can speak against even those you like and support when it matters. I personally rate SLS but believe he is very wrong to support subsidy removal. As a world exposed finance expert he should know, from many examples in history, that responsible leaders worldwide have always chosen to target profligacy and wanton waste, in cost cutting periods, before any attempt to punish those already overburdened beyond what is acceptable.

Even as ignorant folks like you don't know it, I can confirm to you that most of our West African neighbours have far more dignified lives than Nigerians can even dream of enjoying. The shame is on folks like you , totally consumed by feudalism and bigotry, to the extent you cannot see what matters. You are fond of calling others bigots. I can easliy show how you support your failing kinsmen blindly. Yet, I challenge you to show , even once, where I  spoke in support of leaders from the South-West (OGD, OBJ Alao-Akala et al) who failed to lead well.

Maybe Tinubu should become the CBN governor while you Gbawe take over the leadership of SE.

As for showing me where I blindly support my kinsmen, I am curious to see such. Show me!

Any body can say any nonsense. Let GEJ try increase fuel price and his government will be goner.

Where are they squeezing us to? Increasing electricity bill, extorting money from us in the name of changing Vehicle number plates; wants to increase fuel price.

In the midst of these, naira exchange rate is just crumbling; food prices are going up, people are dying in Jos, borno; no plans to do anything.

The  GEJ must be dealt with if this country can progress. He is just a stealing dump fool.

Let them leave the subsidy there.

Mr. President Sir, if you are unable to impact us with the much you have available now, you will achieve nothing with subsidy money.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

CO-SIGN, I HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU,

GEJ does not know what awaits him when this subsidy is removed, this is an issue that should not be
taken lightly. If Nigeria was refining 80% of its crude internally then it would be alright, but it is the reverse
and even less than 20% refined locally so if they remove that subsidy and allow the mark price to reflect the
international market position
this will cripple industry and commerce BIG-TIME!!!

2012 is going to be an interesting year by so many margins,
Re: South-east PDP Endorses Fuel Subsidy Removal by sheyguy: 2:50pm On Nov 28, 2011
GEJ can't secure our border and run a govt. that will balance accounts. The same border where clothes, rice, wheat(flour), cars, human beings and our oil are being smuggled through daily. The same border that brings far more loss than oil subsidy brings to us.
I wonder what these south eastern supporter of subsidy removal will do when GEJ decides to remove rice and flour subsidy also just because there are some pple too special to GEJ behind it.
