For sometime now the signs have been coming. We earlier did an article asking what the future holds for Nairaland, Nigeria’s largest online community in the face of its dwindling fortunes.

First the site, once the most visited Nigerian site, was displaced by Vanguard according to Alexa rankings in July 2011. The site gradually moved down to become number six most visited site in Nigeria. Now Nairaland has dropped from the top ten list of most visited sites in Nigeria for the first time in several years. Nairaland as at the time of writing this article is number eleven most visited site in Nigeria after being displaced by LinkedIn.(according to Alexa).

While Alexa rankings may not have total consideration of all factors and therefore not one hundred percent reliable it still points out the general evidence that the forum which had stayed on top spot for years may be losing its influence among Nigerians. The intensity of discussions and activities on the forum has declined and in the face of new, exciting and dynamic offerings coming up on the Nigerian internet space it is only a matter of time for Nairaland to become a giant of the past. And it is already beginning unless there is a creative metamorphosis.
