Student Union Leader Buried As Abia University Announce Fees Hike by Nobody: 2:30pm On Dec 02, 2011
The newly sworn in President of the Student Union Government of the Abia state University,Uturu, Mr. Chidi Uruakpa Uturu who lost his life in an auto crash, was committed to he mother earth today,in his vilage , Ibeku Ngwa in Osisioma Ngwa local government of Abia state.

Uruakpa,23, was said to have died on his way to drop off two of his friends, who escaped unscathed from the SUG bus, which the late union leader was driving.
Pointblanknews.com gathered that Uruakpa, a fourth year student of the Department of Environmental and Resource Management, has been having a running battle with the management of the institution, since he emerged President against a candidate, Mr. George Iroha, allegedly sponsored by the Abia government.

“He has continued to reject overtures made to him by the school authorities to support fees increase, his death is a big blow to the students.I suspect a foul play.”
There were reports that for more than a month after he won elections as the president of the Student Union Government(SUG) of the university, authorities were believed to have played ‘hide and seek games’ with the actual date of swearing in the elected executives, until he and his executives took the oath of office a month ago.

Pointblanknews.com scooped that the delay in swearing in the newly elected SUG officials, who emerged victorious at the elections which held on 14th September, 2011, may not be unconnected with the failure of the ABSU authorities to impose their candidate , Mr. George Iroha, as the president of the ABSU SUG.
A source hinted that Iroha’s campaign was believed to have been heavily funded by the Abia state government, who also mandated the university authorities to ‘water the ground’ for his success in the SUG election.” You need to see how Iroha was throwing money around during the campaigns, there was no doubt he was being sponsored by the State government. Every ABSU student was aware of that.”

The source also added that the students of the institution rejected Iroha when it was clear that he was being sponsored by the government.”We knew the implications of allowing the authorities to impose a candidate on us, such a candidate will always pander to the interest of the authorities than that of the students.”
In the run up to the elections, pressures were said to have been piled on Mr. Chidi Iruakpa, who emerged winner of the seat of the SUG president, to withdraw and support Iroha, but the former refused to cave in. This, we learnt, made the students to support him for his courage as rumours of school fees hike in the event of Iroha emerging SUG president, became the topical issue in the ABSU campus during the polls. A close associate of Uruakpa said he was also threatened that his graduation may be frustrated if he refuse to bow to the demands of the authorities,

At the burial ceremony which held on thursday, students of the institution thronged his community to pay their last respect. One of them,a final year of the department of Biochemistry, who gave his name as Elder, told Pointblankews.com that the school fees hike , which he claimed was the bone of contention between the deceased and the authorities, has now been increased to N100,000 per session, three days after Uruakpa’s death.
At the burial, students booed an unnamed state functionary who came to represent Gov. Theodore Orji at the burial, raining abuses on the governor. It took the intervention of the member repreenting Osisioma Ngwa North in the Abia state House of Assembly, Dr. Ikechukwu Nwabeke, to calm frayed nerves as youth of the community threatened to wreck havoc.
