During service year in Sokoto 2007/2008. There are a number of Mai Shayi joints around City Campus area I used to visit to take hot tea, plus suya and sometimes indomie in the evening, while sharing banters in my smattering Hausa.

There's a 'resident' mai shayi in the hostel where i stay and it's fair to assume that at some point in their lives everyone in that hostel has had dealings with him. Although his sanitary standards are comparatively decent i haven't and don't intend to ever have the tea he makes, but his omelets are simply irresistible. He makes the omelets so well you'd be tempted to have one framed and hung on the wall for your visitors to admire. Thankfully, the enticing aroma effectively dispels such thoughts. The eggs are usually made into sandwiches, a snack the students have given the bizarre name of 'Risky Burger'.

His name is Magaji, and in what is probably acknowledgment of his relevance, he's fondly called Dr. Magaji. Or just plain Doctor. Who said students don't have a sense of humour?

Later they claim Aboki's are beheading them without reason!

Calling your fellow human being a "PIG" is a reason!

Don't start what you can't finish!

Wow! Memories. Infact, I'm salivating now. Mai Shayi was a staple source of well balanced meals for me back in the good old high school days.
I must tell you mai shayi is a global phenomenon. I have come across a couple of them in South East Asia.
They all perform the same tea cup mixing stunts if you know what I mean.
Re: Share Your Experience With Mai Shayi by Dpharisee: 3:43pm On Dec 13, 2011
Back in FUTMINNA students created what we called 'Suyanwich' and 'Cooling' which implied the mai shayi frying egg with bits of suya in it and performing the stunts of mixing the tea (containing half cup of tin milk) until it foams, then making sure that the foaming tea gets stuck in your upper lip with the first sip.
As he is making the tea you also enjoy listening to some Hausa music or BBC/VOA Hausa news service even if you cant speak the language. When you get to the mai shayi joint during peak period the first question you ask is mallam how many people dey for line and he will reply pour, pive that means you have to wait patiently or you leave.

You also have another kind of mai shayi who sell local viagra tea called burantashi as an aphrodisiac, which the mallams call 'key starter' shayi or network service shayi grin grin grin

These mallams would be experts at making espressos, cappuccinos and lattes i'm sure, if nigerians were into that kind of thing.

While i was serving, i used to patronise one close by in the evening for indomine and egg, it was nice with lots of pepper. He was kind of neat though, his place was besides the officer mess where i lived for a while and he sure saved me a couple of hungry nights, when i moved away from the area after 2 months, i have not being tempted to try from another Mai suya
