With the Christmas Day bombing of churches in parts of Northern Nigeria in mind, Mr. Femi Falana, a well-known lawyer and human rights activist, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to purge the security and intelligence apparatus of incompetent personnel.

In his words, those officials ought to have resigned their appointments over a year ago.

[size=18pt]Mr. Falana cautioned that personal friendship and relationship should not be allowed to compromise the security of the nation. [/size]

Extending his condolences to those families which lost their loved ones in the tragic bombings, he criticized a situation where the government would merely issue a statement threatening to deal with the culprits, leaving the nation to await the next disaster to occur.

[size=18pt]“The Federal Government should be told this time around that Nigerians are tired of official statements that are full of sound and fury signifying nothing,”[/size] he said. fury ke?

He pointed out that apart from the State Security Service which has engaged in the thorough investigation and prosecution of a number of suspected terrorists, the police and other security agencies have been overwhelmed in the circumstances.

“Even where a wanted terrorist showed up in the office of a top Police Chief sometimes ago he was released in questionable circumstances,” he recalled. “A few days later, the suspect and his gang bombed the police headquarters.

He noted that for some inexplicable reasons, the Police Chief has been allowed to remain in office to the detriment of our collective security.

“In view of the dangerous implications of allowing the mass killing of unarmed people in churches, markets and other public places the Federal Government should move urgently and decisively to shake up the security apparatus to assure Nigerians and the international community of its capacity to guarantee the security of lives and property in the country,” Mr. Falana stated.

You just don't wake up and change your security chiefs like that without careful investigation and analysis. Mr Femi Falana, thanks for your concerned advice but leave security issues to security consultants who are in better position to offer the needed advice.

GEJ should be asking questions and demanding answers from the Security Chiefs. He put them in charge and it is their duty and responsibility to prevent things like this from happening or at least give reasonable explanations as to why it could not be prevented, in the event that it happens.

They should also tell him their plans for a more secure Nigeria, but I doubt if any of this is happening, why ? because they were appointed on friendship and relationship basis. GEJ is not a security expert , fine, then he should put qualified and experienced people who know what to do in such positions. So we don't end up with a case of the blind leading the blind.

Appointing someone based on friendship and relationship is not something that is peculiar to Nigeria alone, it happens everywhere in the world and that does not mean they are less competent or whatsoever. We are having a issue of a house that is divided against itself, the worst enemy is the enemy from within. We are having problems solving this issue because the whole security apparatus has been compromised and they have a hand in this crisis.

I am sure he has tried his best to put the best hands in those positions but Nigeria is a very complex society with divergent interest that flows in different directions. The most important is where the loyalty and interest of those who are suppose to protect us lies. This makes the issue of resolving this crisis to be more difficult. Let us all support the president and do whatever is possible that would force their hands to act decisively. Abusing the president or just talking from the comfort of our home or as opposition is not the same as being in that hot seat.
