We are realizing our target on foreign investment and job creation – Gov Obi


The Anambra State Government is fast realizing its ambition to attract foreign investments and create jobs for its citizens. Governor Peter Obi made the remark when the State Government and South African Distillers and Wines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a distillery at Onitsha. The company is the largest producer of wines and liquor in  Africa.

Obi said, the distiller will create at least 200 jobs, excluding others that come in the line of production like distribution and sales. It will be established on Public Private Partnership initiative.
He told officials of the company that the state government will do whatever that is needed for work to start immediately on site.

He added: “It is something of excitement that the biggest company in the wine and liquor distillation is here. As you know our interest is to bring  foreign direct ivestments  that will create jobs and this company is going to use local  contractors. It is a win-win. They will work during construction line and after that it has a extend job opportunities that will affect distribution, sales and so on.

The state commissioner for Land and Survey Mr. Ifeanyi Afuba signed for the state government while Mr. Kurt Moore, project manager of the company signed for the distillers. Moore said that the company wants to establish in Anambra because of its principle and policies on investment. Besides, he continued, Onitsha being close to River Niger will give the company easy access for distribution.

According to him, Anambra is investor friendly and they look forward to long lasting relationship as the company will offer employment to the many people. Kurt presented Obi with a product of their company.
Meanwhile Obi had the previous day visited the SABmiller group that are presently constructing the biggest brewery in Nigeria at Onitsha where he expressed optimism that stated that the over $120million project was one of the biggest non-oil direct investment in the country and the first to come to the state since its creation.

He explained that such investment was critical in the state vision of creating employment, empowering the people, eradicating poverty and strengthening the economy.
The Governor said government was putting in place all necessary infrastructures to enhance activities of the companies and was presently discussing with the Minister of power on how to boost power supply to the area as well as other federal and state agencies to help in repositioning the estate.
