The streets of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital and other towns in the Niger Delta were deserted on Monday as workers disobeyed President Goodluck Jonathan's appeal for them to return back to work.
Attempts by former warlord and leader of the Niger Delta Volunteers Force, Asari Dokubor to drum up support for the resumption of normal business and work activities were also ignored by the workers.
The Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress ordered a sit-at-home last night after its negotiation with the Federal Government over the controversial subsidy removal ended without an agreement.
President Jonathan ordered a new pump price of N97 per litre (down from the initial N141) after the gridlock and directed workers to return to their duty posts on Monday morning.
The Nation gathered that government and public offices including banks and oil companies across the Niger Delta region remained under lock and key as Nigerians chose to obey the NLC/TUC directive.
Reports from Warri, the commercial nerve centre of Delta State indicated that nothing much has changed, as the gates of Shell Petroleum Development Company, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and its subsidiaries –the Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company , and the Nigerian Gas Company, among others remained closed.

Fake news. Businesses never closed in Port Harcourt. It was only banks and civil servants ( except the state house of assembly staff) that were closed last week.
