National President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Alhaji Yerima Shettima has called for a sovereign national conference to address the Boko Haram insurgency.
Speaking in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, yesterday at an interfaith symposium organised by the Shafaudeen in Islam Fidunya Wal’akhirat in collaboration with the Centre for Religious Tolerance and Cooperation, Shettima said, “Call it sovereign national conference, national dialogue or constitutional conference, we need to sit down together urgently to prevent Nigeria from crashing.

“We need a national conference that would make the centre less attractive and focus more on the empowerment of the local and state governments to ensure rapid transformation of the grassroots”, he stressed.

On the activities of the Boko Haram sect in the northern part of the country, Shettima said “no religion allows killing. Peace cannot be achieved without justice and equity.

Shettima, who regretted that the sect had been “hijacked by political rivals as against the original principles of its late leader, Malam Yusuf”, urged the Federal Government to curb the excesses of the sect.

Also speaking, the founder of the Shafaudeen in Islam Worldwide, Professor Sabitu Ariyo Olagoke enjoined Nigerians to always be security conscious and “guard the gains of democracy jealously.”
