Dear all, I finished my ND @ yaba college of Technology 2010, right now, i am almost done with my one year industrial training. I applied for driect entry to Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife to study computer engineering, Fortunatly, i was giving admission. I equally applied for HND @ yabatech to finish up my computer engineering career there, i was equally giving admission, Right now, i am so much confused on which one to take, looking at ASUU strike and how many years i am going to spend @ OAU IFE, if i am @ yabatech, i will just do more two year buy but OAU will take like four years all things being equall, Most importantly, My people are against oau ife cos of the years and financial aspect of it, I really do not know what to do now, I really need your candid advice, I am 23years of age. waiting anxiously for your comments.

Bro, pls go for the B.ENG programme and not HND.The time and money is worth it.I am an HND holder but I am back in school again for my B.ENG.(obtained DE into 300 Level)If I had this opportunity of yours then,I would have gotten it right once and for all.Nigerian system does not encourage HND certificate. Please, my brother it is not all about YABATECH ," HND is HND" I finished from that school about three years ago with Upper Credit and I am now working, but the truth is that Nigeria system has relegated HND certificate. There are many lucrative job adverts where it is stated that only University degree holders can apply.Just of recent, coys like UNILEVER,GSK, OANDO and the likes placed adverts and only University Graduates were short listed. Organization like Shell does not employ HND gradute ;it's either OND or B.Sc. Only few oil and gas coys take HND at gradute level: SLB,NNLNG and NNPC do take HND holders, but then the designation given to them is widely different from that of their B.ENG couterparts. For example,in SLB HND graduates at entry level are given the title Field Technologist, while their B.ENG friends are called Field Engineers:NNLNG refer to HND graduates as either Technician or Operators(not even Technologist).Besides, you can easily go for your Masters after your B.ENG without passing through the rigour of PGD.Besides, if you are very serious academically, you may have opportunity to various scholarships unlike in the polytechnic where such an opportunity is very rare.

In conclusion, go to OAU , get it right, free from HND-B.SC dichotomy complexity, avail yourself to the more obvious opportunities and be happy.

@ OP,

Yes oh, HND is being discriminsted somewhat in the job market; but reason this *ish well. . . . .Yabatech is not beans; a Yabatech kpali carries as much weight as any of the other prestigious Unis we hear off in naija, don't let anybody tell you different!
My advice. . . .finish HND, go for PG and then straight to Masters, MBA, PHD and so on. Dropping from potential HND 1 to year 2 - not forward movement or thinking in my humble opinion!

Make-up your mind and stick to your decision. I stuck with my HND and don't regret it discrimination or no discrimination. I did Bus. Admin. and if I run my affairs right will employ PhD holders if I want. We live with our decisions, what will yours be?

I really value the knowledge I got at HND level and remain eternally grateful to my lecturers!

Take this candid advise. Proceed with your DE and obtain your degree. HND holders faces many hurdles to progress after, while it is much more easier for Bsc holders.

Worst advice you can give to someone that have a BSc admission. It is better to go to Bowen or Kogi State University than to go to Yabatech. HND is HND. Please don't slow down your progress in life  because of extra 2 years you will spend studying for your BSc against HND

@op, the previous poster said it all.

Yes, he has said it all. I agree without any reservation

Even if your Degree course takes 5 years, see that as a SACRIFICE to make and spare yourself of a potential 'had I Know' in the future. I suffered discrimination at my former work some years back on this HND/BSC contention. Thanks to God, I now have my Degree even from a prestigious Uni in the UK. But if I were in your shoes, you need not be a genius to know what my decision would be.

Age is also very much on your side. But remember, whatever is worth doing, is worth doing well. You will be very proud of yourself as a Uni Graduate than any other.

But please, I did not & do not mean to disrespect HND holders. Many of them are well rounded professionals, well respected and doing well. But we are only talking about acceptance in the corporate world which leaves little or none to be desired. Some companies would not even consider anything less than first degree

Pls go for B.ENG and forget about HND. This is an opportunity and if you lose it you will blame yourself in the future. I struggled for this kind of opportunity during my time but all effort proved abortive. OAU STRAIGHTTTTTTT

LOL, last time I checked Kogi State University is actually a good school. Interesting argument, it comes up like every year on Nairaland.

guy a single word is enough for a wise man. Let ur parent disown u for not taking HND now and later ur story will turn out to be that of Joseph. Please collect the HND money from your parent and go straight to O.A.U for your B. Sc.

It is the best, u shall eventually turned out to be a corner diamond that people wanting to have. B.Sc. is the matter O, even if OAU go on strike, u r sure u will be completing the B. Sc. program someday and that will be forever and u r not doing "yes sir" for you son some times in the future to come

Am a living testimony of the above post.

My younger brother is in the same dilemma . I advised him to go for HND Yabatech.

He applied for Electrical & Electronics Engineering (DE for UNN and Jamb for Uniben) and HND Yabatech. UNN didnt offer him anything while Uniben Offered him Vocational Electrical & Electronics under Faculty of Education against his choice of Engineering. Knowing the kind of discrimination Bs.Education face in Naija, he was left with no choice than to go back to Yabatech for HND.
Am not even sure of the choice he made because things can be different in the future.

OAU
Enjoy the strike, I spent 5years instead of 4years in OAU. And of
a truth, you can't compare the certificate of B.sc from Ife to that of
Yaba-tech.

I was in this same situation some years back.
I am glad I went on to get my BEng degree.
Please don't go for HND unless its from Germany or Japan and you plan to stay there.
Companies would hardly even shortlist you for tests.
Even Oil companies would request for you under the technician category and within the companies, its quite hard to cross the divide.
I have worked in an Oil company for 10 years so I know.
I also worked in a bank briefly and it was same.

Go the distance and sort yourself out, these days, Post graduate is even fast becoming the minimum. So why HND?

I strongly advice u go for a degree in OAU. I made a similar choice in 2002.
And please work had on your English when u get there. Check the words with ““ ““. Should be ‘GIVEN‘, not ‘GIVING‘. No offence intended!
