ABEOKUTA — OLD Western Region Governors have condemned the overbearing power of the Federal Government particularly in the sharing of the nation’s revenue, the concession of the Lagos-Ibadan and Sagamu‑Benin expressways, insecurity  in the  country and erratic power supply.

However, the company handling the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Bi-Courtney, has accused some of the governors of stalling work on the road.

GOVS MEET—Old Western Region governors met yesterday at Government House Abeokuta, Ogun State. From Left: Govs. Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti, reading the communique; Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun; Babatunde Fasola, Lagos and Rauf Aregbesola of Osun after the meeting. Photo: WUMI AKINOLA.

They, therefore, threatened to take over the reconstruction and management of the  Lagos‑Ibadan and Sagamu expressway.

They also agreed on the  need to create alternative road and rail lines from Lagos to Asaba.

The governors of Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Oyo, Ondo, Lagos and Edo stated these after a closed-door meeting in Oke‑Gbein Government House, Ogun State.

At the end of the meeting, a communique was issued and read  by  Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State.

On the devolution of power, the governors resolved that “the Federal Government is holding on to too much responsibilities and power that are supposed to be within the purview of the federating states.”

They also considered it expedient to review the existing arrangement and devolve more power to the states.

They deplored the imbalance in resource allocation to states that make up the old Western Region, given their contributions to the Gross Domestic Product, GDP.

The governors also reaffirmed their determination to ensure that justice is done on the revenue allocation framework in the country.

On security, the meeting resolved that states must play a more active role in protecting lives and property of  the citizenry beyond mere provision of equipment and logistics to the security agencies.

The meeting noted that the management of the distribution assets was militating against efficient power supply and noted that it had become necessary to take over the distribution assets to facilitate required partnerships for effective power supply.”

In attendance were:  Senator Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun; Mr. Babatunde  Fashola, Lagos; Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti; Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Osun and  Senator Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State while deputy governors of Ondo and Edo states, Alhaji Alli Olanusi and Pius Odubu respectively represented their governors.

The red highlighted part should be our main AIM! Guys, remember that we (every one in the former west) are developmental freaks. That is why Lagos, Ogun, Ibadan, Warri, Asaba and Benin city lead the country in terms of development and citizenry management! God be with us!

We should also look for alternative ways to build an economy without Oil. Though we have oil, the revenue generated should be used for capital projects only! Every other money (Cocoa, Rubber, etc) should be used for other projects we need. Let oil die with oil. We did not need it before, we should not now! It only breeds an attitude of entitlement and laziness.
