Re: Do We Really Need All These Numerous Public Holidays ? by luvtoyota(m): 11:01am On Feb 04, 2012
the question is not wether it is new or old . The question is , are they necessary ?

Can't we do away with the old order ?

Can't we purge the nation of unnecessary burdens ?

The bitter truth is our survival as a nation is not really based on hardwork but corruption. Go to farmers in the rural area or chinese factories and ask them how often do they go holiday. U will find out they dont just go on hols because their survival and progress economically is based on hardwork.
We shldnt be having as much holidays.

Why should  events that occurred on weekends be celebrated on  working days as public holidays?

Why must we shift holidays that fell on weekends to working days, thereby consuming some working days[man-hours]? angry All these stealing of working days for holidays portray us as unserious and a people who likes relaxation at the detriment of work. No wonder, we are backward in industrial productivity.

My opinion is that holidays should be celebrated on days they occurred. Period.

@OP,can you prove your assertion by naming the holidays from Jan-Dec? U may ignore those based on sighting of the moon, unless if u can predict same.
Re: Do We Really Need All These Numerous Public Holidays ? by usbcable(m): 8:26pm On Feb 04, 2012
15/365*100=4.1%----------public holidays
8*12/365*100=26.3%-------weekends
the rest of the days we work
i.e workdays= 100%-(4.1+26.3)%
                   = 100%-30.4%
                   = 69.6%

in a day the average working hours is 8-5 i.e we spend about a third of our day working with at least 30 to 1 hour break.

hence we spend a third of our day working and a third of our year on holiday
which I dont see the public holidays as a problem.

na wa for employers(slave masters) that want 12 hours work from you sef

Its jus a total of 2wks in a whole year. Wats wrong with dat. So u think nigeria will b a better place with fewer public holidays? Is it this 18 minimum wage u want pple to work their lives off for
Re: Do We Really Need All These Numerous Public Holidays ? by Nobody: 9:52pm On Feb 04, 2012
In a country where there is no flexibility in working hours then we can rest on public hols. I have a friend in the states who works 3 days a week at 12hours each and 4 days of rest. Public hols wont be a big thing to such individual.
Re: Do We Really Need All These Numerous Public Holidays ? by Nobody: 9:54pm On Feb 04, 2012
It was obasanjo who syarted the shifting of public jols on weekends to the following week.
Re: Do We Really Need All These Numerous Public Holidays ? by MemeInc(m): 10:59pm On Feb 04, 2012
You have to be careful and fair in what u say. The fact that muslims get a day or two for their celebrations should be unkind. Christmas n easter falls during holidays and yet u arent happy that a day is declared holiday?THAT'S UNFAIR, YES IT IS.
Re: Do We Really Need All These Numerous Public Holidays ? by nsiadi: 12:05am On Feb 05, 2012
There is nothing wrong with vacations
But dont jubilate yet

Civil servants have annual leaves
The self employed hardly enjoys any holiday

Its not true that January 1st is a holiday d world over
The Indians work on January 1st. They dont c why they shd start a new year with a holiday!

We are quite different here. Even when a scheduled holiday falls on a wk nd we shift to a working day
The idea isnt the best no matter how one tries to look @ it

During last strike action we were told how much the Nation lost
Losing 4.1% of the year to just holiday is no joke.
Mind you the civil servants have this 4.1% added to their annual vacations

I think many holidays dont add to our values. Take vacations
Lets try working till 12 noon on Holidays
If no then deduction of public holidays shd be made from workers annual leaves

We are a country sensitive to our religious affiliations, hence the holidays. The governments in the SE and SS might not follow through with the Islamic holidays except Federal workers. In the interest of peace and equality, then yes we need the holidays.

My opinion is that holidays should be celebrated on days they occurred. Period.

In most countries, when a public holiday falls on a weekend, the holiday is shifted to the next working day. This is not unique to Nigeria at all.

In UK, this year, they're going to have 9 days off, with 1 day for the queen's golden jubilee. In Scotland, it's 10 days.

In USA, there are 10 days declared by the Fed govt (although states tend to differ a bit).

Brazil has about 14 days of public holidays this year.

Botswana (which has one of the best economies in Africa) has 12 days, as does South Africa.

Germany has roughly 10 days (depends on which state you're in).

Malaysia: 14 days (or more, depending on the state you live in).

And these are the countries that we tend to associate with working hard:

China: 11 days.
Japan: 14 days.
India: 14 days (more than 14 in some states)

Countries which have several major religions have to observe the holidays for all the religions, so tend to have more holidays.

Productivity is not really reduced by public holidays. What do you say about countries in Europe, where paid leave is generally long and paid maternity/paternity leave is long. And what will you say about France and their 35 hour work week.
Re: Do We Really Need All These Numerous Public Holidays ? by Stealthy(m): 12:37am On Feb 05, 2012
And really, if you don't like the holidays, you can always work from home or go to your place of work (if you have the required access). No one forces holidays on people.

I personally plan to work on Monday, but that doesn't mean other people shouldn't enjoy the holiday.

Don't know why some people specialise in opening senseless threads.
@op if you like you can work 24/7/365. Nobody is stopping you.

BTW how did this make it to the front page

I guess maybe because the bulk of you whining do not work out in the 'fields' as the O&Gs will put it. . . . . . that's why you do not appreciate the public holidays and whatever good they bring.

Some folks work for 21, 28, 56, 90+ days - approximately 12 hours a day - and they do not have the luxury of public holidays to refresh!
