Kano Islamic Police Confiscate N6.5m Merchandise Belonging To South Easterner by manchy7531: 11:51am On Feb 13, 2012
Information available to 247ureports.com indicate that the Kano State funded Islamic police [Hisbah] has resumed activities in the Kano metropolitan environs. As gathered, the Islamic police struck on Saturday night [11:30pm] confiscating goods estimated at N6.5million.

According to infomation received from Kano, the Islamic police on the night of Saturday February 11, 2012 seized a trailer loaded with alcoholic beverages along the Hadeja roundabout – headed for Sabon Gari, Kano, a christian dominated community. The trailer load of merchandise, as gathered, was headed for the business residence of a beer distributor who is of south east extraction.

The confiscated merchandise remains with the men of Hisbah. They are expected to either hand the case over to the Nigerian police for onward prosecution or proceed to charge the owner of the goods to Shariah court. The owner of the goods is a Christian - who goes by the name “Jude”.

The Shariah law which the House of Assembly in Kano adopted and passed into law in late 2004 during the administration of Malam Ibrahim Shekarau banned the use and sell of alcohol beverages in the State.

The Nigerian police in Kano in responding to 247ureports.com inquiry indicated that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Hisbah [Islamic police] and so it is not within the juridiction of the Nigerian Police. This is according to the Police Public Relations Officer [PPRO], Malam Magaji. He directed the Hisbah board be contacted. Efforts to reach the Hisbah boards proved abortive.

The activities of the Kano State Islamic police appears on the increase following the black friday attacks on Kano State. As a source within the Kwankwaso administration admitted, the government of Kano State decided to change gears in its outlook on security issues – to include the adoption of the Islamic police as part pf the security apparatus of the government. The Islamic police is reportedly utilized increasingly by the Kwankwaso government to administer law and order in most parts of the State.

Our correspondent contacted the government through one of its image maker, Malam Dantiye, and he claimeed to have “no idea” of the confiscation – but promised to to check on it.

Nigeria police defaulted the case to Hisbah? Is the N100M truly for Kano victims or to upgrade Hisbah and prepare it to replace NPF as the state's defacto law enforcement agency?

Why is Jude investing N6.5M in another man land? God be with him, now boko will be upset that he is part of the kafirs feeding alcohol to Muslims. If anyone know Jude tell him to go underground and out. They will mark him.

My response was to whoever associated that picture with the story. So you gave me the title of Malame for making an observation that you the original poster ought to have done? A sane person like myself knows the reason why the picture is there.

^^^Spot on!!! They chop wipe mouth like say dem no chop anything. In a fair setting they would be given the choice of allowing people to conduct their business (in designated settings of course) without let or hindrance, and in keeping with the 'ONE NAIGERIA' secular federation mantra; or alternatively, they could go with your suggestion above. But don't hold your breath.

why is this hausa/fulani geting away with every bad thing they do in nigeria.
while the south are in division the hausa/fulani's are destroying us one after another.

how shall the nation feel when the east banned anything cattle rearing with a law " its against our traditional blv" . just picture it and see
now in the north nigeria police(mixture of north and south) are almost powerless, but hisbah police(full of only hausa/fulani/kanuri) and in control.
systematicaly they establish their own regional polce while refuse to approve it in the central.

shame on igbo and yoruba for not joining forces together to tame these virus in human body.

Maybe this story is all cooked up, yet its a very realistic situation. The East is very undeveloped, the West and Edo+ Delta the same. Time to start Bokorizing those governors/senators (Dayum I cant stand them) and the "elected" leaders into transforming our regions.

And some people will keep screaming one Nigeria. Confiscation of beer is not a big deal if you don't have license. But the insult on the secularity of Nigeria done without the slightest remorse calls for concern.
Nigeria will break if we continue like this. To avoid violence, let's just sit at a table and peacefully withdraw from this corpse of a country.

From the responses so far one can easily see a great deal of ignorance and lack of reasoning on the part of many respondents.

Putting sentiments aside: Kano State like any other state in Nigeria is equipped by the constitution to make and pass legitimate laws (including the much dreaded and least understood Sharia law)in the best interest of its citizens; believe me if any of this was unconstitutional, it would have been successfully challenged in the courts of law - especially by CAN, who seem hell bent against it.

Be that as it may, Kano State, like some states in the USA during the era of prohibition, decided to ban the sale and consumption of alcohol, as way a of reducing immorality in the state; in the same way some states e.g. decided to ban okada for security reasons, the FG banning of indian hemp and other illicit drugs for similar reasons etc.

If we agree that the state (Kano) has a legitimate right to pass such law then why should some people take it upon themselves to flaunt the law, knowing fully well that the state would be compelled to take full action against them. Why then would some people, due to their different culture and geographical origin, feel they are above the law - and be the ones playing victims here?
Even when it comes to implementation, the state had been very lenient by generally turning a blind eye to vastly southern/Christian Sabon Gari area, notwithstanding that the law on alcohol is non exclusive - so who is in the wrong here?
Re: Kano Islamic Police Confiscate N6.5m Merchandise Belonging To South Easterner by dustydee: 9:25pm On Feb 13, 2012
And why is this news? The man broke the law and his goods were confiscated. I don't think he can be tried in a sharia court unless he agrees to it.
Re: Kano Islamic Police Confiscate N6.5m Merchandise Belonging To South Easterner by MeAboki(m): 10:46pm On Feb 13, 2012
Accordingly, he would be tried under the appropriate state edict as a non Muslim but not under sharia law.
Sharia law will always by default apply to Muslims only, however, in event of a dispute between a Muslim and a non Muslim the latter is at liberty to elect for the case to be judged by Sharia - if he feels he will get better justice.
In other words, if for example a Muslim and a Christian have issues, the Christian is free to sue the Muslim to either Sharia or general penal courts, which ever suits him; but the reverse is not the case because Sharia is deemed non binding to the non believer.
Non Muslims really have no cause to be afraid of Sharia in the North; although this does mean that, like all legal systems (especially in Nigeria) Sharia is free from corruption, misinterpretation or misapplication in the hands of the overzealous few - hence, there would also be its innocent victims.
