Senate President, David Mark has described the
Nigerian Football Federation, NFF as the most
corrupt government agency in the country. Mark made the claims yesterday during the
consideration of a motion on the dwindling
trends of sport in the country sponsored by
Senator Adamu Gumba and 15 others, in which
it was revealed that the NFF embezzled over
N2.16 billion proceeds given to Nigeria by Federation of International Football
Association, FIFA. He said corruption in NFF was responsible for
the total decline in football, lamenting that
Nigeria which was once the football giant of
Africa now quivers before smaller football
nations during matches. He said, “Sport has been a very serious
business that is of national interest. Olympic is
coming and I am not sure whether we have got
our team ready. We have failed woefully;
corruption is not just financial corruption alone
even the way the players were brought in is another form of corruption. “The confusion between NFA and NFF got be resolved, as we speak today, Nigeria is very
down. I do not think we should bring federal
character into football, at the moment; there are
too many federal characters. “There is confusion and government must put it foot down to get it right. We play Rwanda and
we are worried, everybody is jittery, instead of
us talking about how goals, it is as bad as that.
NFF is the center of corruption in the country,
there is no running away from the fact.” Mark advised that Federal Government should
shut down football for a period of time to allow
for better planning. According to him, “The fact that FIFA say we
cannot touch NFA does not mean we cannot
disband football we can forget football lock
ourselves in a room for many years so as to get
it right.” Senator Gumba while moving the motion noted
“That the Senate is concerned with the sorry
state of Nigerian football, the game that unites
all Nigerians together in spite of her diversity. “The Senate further notes that Nigerian football over the years has continued to slide despite
the huge resources the Federal Government is
investing in the game.” Senators who spoke on the motion blamed
corruption, maladministration and
incompetence, poor infrastructure and lack of
grass root support as the bane of sports and
football in particular in the country. Senator Heineken Lokopobiri, PDP Bayelsa, in
his contribution said corruption is the bane of
football in Nigeria being speared headed by the
NFF. Lokpobiri who was former chairman Senate
Committee on Sports accused former chairman
of NFF Sani Lulu of mismanaging N2.16 billion. ”The level of maladministration in Nigerian
football today is too high. We have crop of very
incompetent leaders managing our football
today. As of today we do not have NFA, what
we have is NFF which is illegal. Those who are
managing our football at the moment are part of Lulu failed exco. There is no way we can
make progress with this crop of leaders. “There is no organization in Nigeria that is as corrupt as NFA. Nigeria got $8 million for
participating in World Cup and another $5.5
million for participating in junior world cup. I
have been asking for the money without any
answer.” Following conclusion of debate on the motion,
the Senate resolved to hold a public hearing to
address the problems in the sport sector.
