Why Companies Are Moving To Ghana - Varsity Pro-chancellor by Dainfamous: 12:36am On Mar 08, 2012
Major companies in Nigeria are moving their head offices to Ghana because they are finding it difficult to work with the manpower produced by Nigerian tertiary institutions, Chairman Committee of Pro-chancellors, Dr. Wale Babalakin has said.
Babalakin who was speaking on the sidelines of an interactive workshop organized by the Committee on Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities in Abuja yesterday said this trend is not good for Nigeria.

He said the companies formally attribute stability as the reason for the movement but insider information suggests they are having difficulties sourcing manpower from our educational system.

He said: “There is a direct correlation between the development of any society and the quality of its universities. The managing director of Nestle three years ago said that he found out that the problem in Nigeria was not electricity power but manpower.

“He wanted 200 fresh graduates, got 6000 applications and employed four. If you happen to be in the industry you would see a gradual movement to Ghana. Nestle has moved its head office to Ghana, Cocacola is threatening and a few other institutions. They quote stability as the reason but if you are close to them they let you know that they still have difficulty with our sources of manpower which is our educational system.”

He suggested that government starts correlating remuneration with performance in universities to monitor output of its staff.

He said: “You have a federal government that pays salaries without any cost effectiveness. Pursuing this attitude, most universities have salaries of N6billion, capital fund of N400million, research fund of N400million. This is the product of not working the growth of remuneration and not putting university management in charge of the best use of resources.”
