Okonjo-iweala Sues Pointblank News For N10 Billion by nimi1: 9:59am On Mar 08, 2012 |
Following the publication of a patently false story against her by POINTBLANK NEWS, an online news medium, the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has sued the medium for N10 billion. The minister is claiming the amount against POINTBLANK NEWS COMMUNICATIONS INC. and its directors – Jackson Ude and Churchill Umoren – as general damages for libel and the same amount as exemplary and aggravated damages for libel. The suit is with regard to a news story titled “Okonjo-Iweala buys N1.2 billion Abuja mansion!”published on January 10, 2012 which, among other false claims, alleged that the Minister purchased the “mansion” from Chief Fabian Nworah, owner of EFAB Properties Ltd in November 2011. In response to a rebuttal issued by the minister’s office, POINTBLANK NEWS responded that it had “overwhelming evidence to prove that she owns the mansion but if she insists we are wrong she knows where to seek redress”. Chief Nworah issued a statement in which he denied that he or his company sold the alleged property – No 3 Nworah Street, Off Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja – or any other property to Dr Okonjo-Iweala. He added for emphasis that the property described in the story was in fact still available for purchase at the time the story was published. In the statement signed by Chief Nworah: “It is a fact that we have properties for sale but nonehas been sold as at today – January 11, 2012. We are still looking for buyers and we want to say categorically that we did not sell any of the houses to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.” In confirmation that its intent was malicious rather than professional, POINTBLANK NEWS refused to retract its story and in fact continued to prominently display the egregious falsehood on its website, in defiance of all standards of professionalism and decency. In the absence of any independent inquiry that emerges with infallible evidence, our best guess is simply a speculation in either direction. This is the first time I have heard a public officer living up to the expectation. Truly, anytime anyone publishes a purportedly false story, or makes an allegation against a public officer, that public officer should drag them to court if he/she knows that the truth has not been said. If the person of the honorable minister has been needlessly tainted, I will be glad to watch her get a full compensation for this. I have always canvassed for this kind of no-nonsense move to protect the image of good public officers. Pointblank have better have a good defense, or else this is their end. |

nimi1: Are you literate and read the story? Pointblanknews dared her, so why dont we wait and see how it pans out than start castigating the thoroughbred professional that published the story. I pray she'll be able to stand the heat when the going gets tough. She'll be so dragged in the mud she'll regret going to court. Nonsense. |

newnairaway: We are so quick to judge and I think that is one of our major challenge as a nation. We do not have the fact and it would only be civil for us all to wait till the end of the case to see what each party presents in the court of law before we know who is telling the truth here. |

She need to go sit her arse somewhere, will she allow a full audit of her financial dealing going back to when she served under OBJ? Freaking hypocrite, if she's so clean & her ethics are impeccable then she should make all her financial dealing including that of any member of her inner circle available for a public audit, |

Super clean ego centric lady! Yes, dispute these facts if you can. Under her watch and supervision consequent upon her second missionary journey and elevation to the position of coordinating minister of the economy, the 2012 federal budget had imbedded in it lots of recycled projects whose projected costs were over-inflated. They should let her be, 1.2 billion naira only for a house for a super ministerof her standing, let us for once appreciate her patriotic zeal. Nigerians save Nigeria. |
