Just great. GEJ, commander-in-chief, sir, hope you had apriori intelligence on this matter.

At least 100 of Boko Haram guerrillas on Monday seized control of the town of Gao in Northern Mali, news agencies reportedly quoted Abu Sidibe, a Local Deputy Governor in the country to have said.

“There are a good 100 Boko Haram fighters in Gao. They are Nigerians and from Niger,” Mr Sidibe was quoted to have said.

“They’re not hiding. Some are even able to speak in the local tongue, explaining that they are Boko Haram,” he added.

The news was confirmed also by the Bamako security forces.

Militants from Boko Haram “were in a majority among those who attacked the Algerian consulate” in Gao on Thursday, a Malian security official said, adding that “they had black skin”.
Seven Algerian diplomats, including the consul, were taken hostage at the time.

Mali has been grappling with a separatist uprising in the north. It intensified after the coup by army officers on 22 March.

Seven people were killed today, including a girl of seven, in a new wave of attacks launched by the Boko Haram Islamic group.

In Dikwa, Yobe state, the terrorists killed a policeman, a civilian and a local politician during the night, as made known by the Nigerian army.

They attacked a police station, a bank, and a hotel but was forced back by the soldiers, as lieutenant-colonel Sagir Musa, the Joint Task Force of the Borno State spokesperson announced.

Three of the guerillas were killed, the others, though injured, managed to run away.

Here are some facts about Boko Haram

THE GROUP

* Boko Haram became active in about 2003 and is concentrated mainly in the northern Nigerian states of Yobe, Kano, Bauchi, Borno and Kaduna.

* Boko Haram, which in the Hausa language of northern Nigeria means “Western education is sinful,” is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.

* The group considers all who do not follow its strict ideology as infidels, whether they be Christian or Muslim. It demands the adoption of sharia, or Islamic law, across Nigeria.

* Boko Haram followers have prayed in their own mosques in cities including Maiduguri, Kano and Sokoto, and wear long beards and red or black headscarves.

* The group published an ultimatum in January 2012 giving Christians three days to leave northern Nigeria. Since then, attacks in northeastern Nigeria have killed many and hundreds of Christians have fled to the south. President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency on Dec. 31 in an effort to contain the violence.

* Human Rights Watch said in January that the sect had killed at least 935 people since 2009.

* Jonathan said the violent sect had supporters within his own government and the insecurity the group had created was worse than during the civil war that broke out in 1967 and killed more than a million people.

* In a recent success, Nigeria arrested the purported spokesman for Boko Haram on Feb. 1, known as Abu Qaqa.

* Abu Qaqa, a shadowy figure and purported spokesman for Boko Haram said on March 20 it had “closed all possible doors of negotiation” with a government of “unbelievers” that it cannot trust, and called on Muslims to join the fight against it.

From the other articles I've come across, it doesn't seem that they specifically have taken the town. Looks more like they are loaning fighters to their allies in Mali..

Still, it seems troubling that the the northern border is so wide open.

Unfortunately, so are the Eastern, Western, and Southern borders. We are a very vulnerable nation. A real external threat to the whole country may very well be what we need to push us towards unity. Tribalism would go out of the window instantly, replaced by nationalism.

Easy for them to overstate the existence of Boko Haram in Mali.

An invasion of Mali by ECOWAS forces which predictably would consist of a large bulk of Nigeria's army would be suicide.

Our army is currently overstrecthed and can not afford to be pulled onto another frontline with the likes of BH and MEND. Besides, amassing such troops is prolly gonna take a month or so.

Also a risk of Nigeria being targeted by Tuareg Islamist Suicide Bombers if they end up on the losing side of the Malian civil war.

Heh. Would be very convenient for you, no? grin

Unfortunately for you and others who seek fake unity, this threat (BH) is internal (though with some external friends and allies), and originates in a certain region of Nigeria.

I view this bs as a propaganda to drag Nigeria into the fight against AQIM.. AQIM is not a threat to Nigeria, we already have BH and MEND to contend with - and that's enough for us.. America and France should deal with the monster they created in the Sahara...

If you guys can't see the hypocrisy in this propaganda, then there is definitely something wrong with Nigeria.. On one hand, they're fighting against Al-qaeda - on the other hand they funded them and gave them weapons in Libya...

Nigeria shouldn't get involved in this bs - let the french stooge a la Quattara, and Ivorien soldiers liberate Mali - and leave us out of this mess... We've nothing in common with Malians. France is the sole benefactor from Mali, and all of French West Africa.. French and Ivorien troops should liberate Mali, it's none of our business. undecided

Well said shymmex.

Let France, the US and co meddle if they like in this. At the end of the day it isn't some sort of Islamic religious battle, but a self-determination movement by the Tuareg. Least this is my read of things.

Our best bet is to mind our business, seal our porous Northern border, implement national ID so we actually know who is who in this country and have accurate population counts.

Moreso when the Tuareg rebels are spoiling for war with AQIM over their proposed strict Islamic institutionalized order . . .Trouble is brewing in Mali . .cos it appears each victory suffers a setback that forces the victors to retrace theirs steps seeking redress . . .

Is Boko haram there to bolster AQIM rank against the Tuaregs rebels undecided . .

Who is "Quattara?" I get disgusted by people who do not even bother to read, yet feel the need to comment on issues. Who is "Quattara?"

Secondly, the rest of your post is completely illogical.
AQIM is not a threat to Nigeria, yet there are boko haram apes fighting for them and striving to establish an independent enclave? No one needs to elaborate any further for the agile mind to tie loose ends.

To help your re-analysis further (whenever you decide to do it); consider that Nigeria supplies the US 15% of its oil needs... Ask someone to help with joining the dots.

Let me lecture you,...

Alassane Ouattara is the President of Ivory Coast and ECOWAS.. Since, he's in charge of ECOWAS - and ECOWAS are planning to liberate Mali. It's only right for him and his boss over there in Paris - to get Ivorien and French troops to liberate Mali. It has nothing to do with Nigeria..

And where are the proofs that these guys are members of BH?? Just because some random guys said they're BH - then we've to go over there and waste the unavailable resources, and the lives of the brave men and women of our armed forces over some conjectural crap, huh?? And what's in it for us??

How old are you again?? If you don't know how western media operate in this day and age - I'm sorry, you will be a fool and numbskull forever..

What did we gain from Liberia and Sierra Leone, despite losing some of our best soldier - and spending billion of dollars of our own money?

Why can't you get your family and friends over there to liberate them? And who gives a phuck if USA buys 15% of our oil - we can always find other buyers... May be you should ask NATO why they created the mess in Libya in the first place - without the hindsight of what it will mean for the whole region... America and France created the mess - let them go over there and clean it up, it's none of our business...

You mentioned Quattara, because you are a name dropping, ignorant dunce. There is most likely nobody in the whole wide World called Quattara, except to rumour mongering dullards like you who get their news from Dugbe market and come to NL's politics section to air their crusty arses through their smelly mouths.

Mentally impaired twerp.

Alassane Dramane Ouattara (French pronunciation: [alasan wataʁa]; born 1 January 1942) is an Ivorian politician who has been President of Côte d'Ivoire since 2011. An economist by profession, Ouattara worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) - where he rose to be deputy head - [1] and the Central Bank of West African States (French: Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, BCEAO), and he was the Prime Minister of Côte d'Ivoire from November 1990 to December 1993, appointed to that post by President Félix Houphouët-Boigny.[2][3][4][5] Ouattara became the President of the Rally of the Republicans (RDR), an Ivorian political party, in 1999.

At the end of the day, it doesn't concern us. The main takeaway lesson should be our borders are porous.

BH is probably sending fighters over to Afghanistan and Somalia as well. Does it then logically follow that we must pursue adventures there?

No. Take border security seriously, have a better sense of:

a) who is in the country
b) who is lawfully permitted to be in the country

and many of these issues will go away.

And the dumbest thing about getting involved in hunting Islamists in Mali is that they aren't even the most powerful force there.

Again, the main Tuareg movement seems to be secular in nature rather than Islamist.

What is the sense in going on an Islamist hunting adventure in a 99% Muslim country when the relevant actors (the Malian state and the Tuareg rebels) are secular rather than religious?

Don't make the same mistake America always does of leaping before it looks (with all due respect to the US)...
Re: Boko Haram Guerrillas Have Seized Control Of The Town Of Gao In Northern Mali by ektbear: 2:45am On Apr 10, 2012
Better to support some sort of peaceful resolution of the situation rather than something that will cause further destablization.

If the Mali government wins, we should be happy. If the secular Tuaregs win, we should also be relatively happy.

The only way I see at this point both of those factions losing and the Islamists winning is if some dumb third party does something stvpid. Like invading.

ndu_chucks: Unfortunately, so are the Eastern, Western, and Southern borders. We are a very vulnerable nation. A real external threat to the whole country may very well be what we need to push us towards unity. Tribalism would go out of the window instantly, replaced by nationalism.

Dont even go there, any huge external threat now will spell doom for Nigeria. Many groups will latch into it and either extract their pound of flesh or call it quits. If you think external threath, especially if its from west, will bring unity, I doubt it, unless its from...say Ghana or Benin republic, etc then I think most Nigerians will see it as an insult for a little nation to bully us.

I would suggest we get our house in order first, charity, they say begins at home. Lets get our how in order through proper structuring of the polity, if we do that I believe this storm will calm down before you know it.

On the issue of Boko Haram, there are quick things FG and fellow Nigerians can do to help bring about result fast. I believe govt and Nigerian people initially mis-read Boko Haram. As bad as we feel that this problem was brought to us by northern leaders' negligence of their people, I think time has come for us to quit this blame game and swing into acrion. To solve the problem of Boko Haram requires not only taking out the hardcore terrorist among them but also realizing that poverty, hopelessness, and dangerous indoctrination helped build this monster. If we kill all of them but fail to even educate and provide hope for the young Almajiris, we would have wasted our bullets. If we believe in One Nigeria then everybody must help, especially Northern brothers, their emirs, and govts to salvage the salvagables and then throw the hardcore unrepentant ones in jail.

Our people say - when handshake passes the wrist it changes from handshake to apprehension. this situation we have now where our citizens are becoming mercenaries thousands of miles away is no longer wii or xbox game, this right here is real and scary. Even if we're to break away and leave the north to face this terror, we're still not completely immuned from any unforeseen event up north. What if in the event of a complete collapse of Nigeria these Boko Boys run the govt of north out of office and we, in the south, are now faced with the reality of a taliban style leadership up north? It means we'll be invading north every year to stop Boko boys from buying or selling uranium.

The reason for my post is to tell brothers and sisters in the south that - this doesnt look good for us. We need to support well meaning northerners and our Govt to kill this virus. Lets support the govt's effort in providing education to the under-privilledge Almajiris whom their fathers, northern leaders, emirs, and FG has failed. While we're on that we should also support and/or pressure our govt through the media and other forums such as this to establish skill acquisition centers for those older and graduated Almajiris that are almost useless in a fast and changing economy such as ours.

What we need to bring about unity right now is not just only external threat, we need work, we need skills, we need better life - an idle mind is the devils domain. We can pretend this mess is only restricted up north but the truth is it will eventually cascade.
