Before Nigeria got her independence from John Lyttleton(the last British Governor-general of Nigeria),the North were granted 50% derivation from Agriculture.that was when Nigeria's economic mainstay was from cash crops.A priviledge other Regions did not enjoy because the colonialist incessant taxation imposed on other regions, except the North, recall the historic Aba women riot of late 1920s.
Then nobody complained in the spirit of anticipated common destiny.Even though that the census figures conducted in the 1950s (that is by the colonial master)showed that the Southern Protectorate was more populous than the North.
The north opposed Nigeria's independence in 1957 when Ahmadu Bello insisted that the North can only support Lyttleton's intended One Nigeria if they got 50% of parliamentary seats in the national parliament, which was impossible following the actual census figures released earlier. This position was scripted in a petition he delivered to the Governor-general.So Lyttleton stood down on Nigeria's independence due for 1957.He sought opportunity to placate the North and eventually created more seats in the parliament and allocated more than 50% to the North against the constitutional provision.
Ahmadu Bello accepted it and was ready for independence the following year. And in describing the new birthed Nigeria said:"This new Nation called Nigerian is a Northern estate that should only be managed by Northerners and Southerners must be regarded as conquered people, never should be allowed to manage this estate or decide their future.
True to his word,Abubarkar Tafawa Balewa(a Fulani like Ahmadu Bello-the chairman of the ruling party NPC) managed Nigeria like their father's estate. When Awolowo reacted Bello vowed to deal with him.which he later actualized more than a year later.Awo was Unjustly jailed for 10years without trial. The collective aspirations of other Regions of the country were neglected. This cocktail proved too heady for the Eastern region to take when suddenly the 50% derivation allocated to the Region(following the oil boom)was slashed.Anger hung in the air.The East groaned, murmmured and shouted to no avail. There was palpable tension in the land, known voices of opposition were jailed without trial.
Shortly after Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu(A Delta State Igbo from Okpanam)led a successful coup, which was largely supported by some Igbo junior military officers. But top Igbo military brass(Ojukwu included) chided the coup plotters and othered them to submit to the top military hierachy which they did.But before then the political leaders of the country were killed(though not all). The then senate president invited the military to take over the reins of governance which they did.
The retaliatary coup(led by General Murtala Muhammad and supported by the entire North, mostly military)was even bloodier in comparative analyses. This went beyond killing Aguiyi Ironsi (General)and his deputy,a Yoruba was spared and told to go and sin no more.Ordinary Igbo civillian were persistently killed great numbers. One would have thought that since the North had succeeded in their coup, killing of civilian in the streets of the North is nolonger necessary. They continued unabated until the government of Eastern region responded with secession to enable them provide adequate security since it was in the hands of federal government.
Gowon countered secession with declaration of war against the East. But today during Ojukwu burial He admitted war was not the only option open to federal government, but acted to satisfy those who rigged him into office.
Each time the North talks about one Nigeria,it is not because they mean it but because it means more revenue for them and rigging of our collective destiny for their financial benefit.Test the patriotism of the North with non access to power for only 20years and see if thy will not denounce Nigeria. As they are already doing with the Boko Haram for non access to power for barely two years.
In contrast the Igbos have not been there for 52years and have not yet protested let alone bomb mosques or fellow citizen but have rather become the adhesive force holding Nigeria Left for the North alone Nigeria should just leave the Presidency for them alone and Boko Haram will fade away into dust bin of history.
