James Ibori was a petty criminal who once worked for the DIY store Wickes, but he re-invented himself as one of the richest - and most corrupt - of Nigeria's regional governors.

He was jailed for 13 years after pleading guilty to fraud charges totalling around £50m. He used aid money - much of which came from the UK - to fund a jetset lifestyle.

Our Judicial System ought to bow their heads in shame, they failed to convict a thief, and the Uk now convicted him and he will be jailed for his crimes. big shame to EFCC, they fail to prosecute big thieves like Ibori and focus on the masses. Its a shame

A shame really. watched the clip hours ago n couldn't help notice the massive scale of this guy's scam. It's a big shame that foriegners have to convict our thiefs for us. He has also confessed defrauding delta state and akwa ibom of their shares in V mobile (amounting to millions of pounds) alongside Victor Attah, erstwhile governor of A/ibom state, yet Vic Attah still walks around a free man in naija. The whole system is a mess.!! lipsrsealed

Yes truly it's a disgrace. GEJ should be a noble and brave president to tackle corruption head-on.

GEJ cannot because he's fully involved.

I don't know why Nigerians (especially Nairalanders) love to "Act blissfully ignorant" We continue to have instances where Justice is strangled for the benefit of corrupt, tribalistic and religious bigots. We see them on our TV screens everyday and we step up to argue/discuss and issues in defense of them. it is either GEJ is a bloody thief because someone accused Tinubu of being a reckless thief. We have ministers, criminals, fraudsters who have become Governors, Ministers, Senators, Representatives, CEOs and yet when the topic comes up, rather than recognize that this individual's past/present is marred wicked corruption and criminality, we simply ask for evidence. For example $16 billion was spent on a fanthom Power Project and our famed Political Posters on Nairaland will come up and say "Prove it" they foolishly ignore the fact that $16 billion has left the Federation Accounts and flew into thin air under OBJ's watchful eyes and authorization.

We thrive with corrupt leaders, we love corruption even when we hypocritically try to hide it, it ooozes from every orifice on our bodies.
Otherwise why are we still here doing nothing but complain

Why should they be ashamed when we the people protect these thieves and hand them over to an imaginary being to mete out justice and punishment.

The Nigerian judiciary and EFCC are afraid of the likes of Ibori, Uduaghan, Peter Odili, Atiku and Obasanjo. They become very strong when it comes to an ordinary Nigerian. SHAME ON THE NIGERIAN JUDICIARY and EFCC

The conviction of James Ibori in a UK court is a shame to Nigerians. The EFCC should be scrapped. All judiciary officers in the Ministry of Justice and judges who compromised his trial in Nigeria should be sacked. All the banks involved in the transfer of the looted funds abroad should be sanctioned. The nation's economy will collapse if massive looting of public funds is not controlled.

Abeg count EFCC out, cos they are being frustrated by our corrupt judiciary , remember the Ibori case which the london court tried was built on EFCC charges which the nigeria court throw out for lack of merit

Shockingly nothing is said about this case in the corridors of powers in 9ja. The same judges would rule on other cases n d merry go round continues. Its a shame really. I was in London on the day of the trial n was so proud when I heard the news that this thief has been convicted. Proud that I live in a society where justice is upheld no matter who u r or how much u have. Sadly, I remember that I am not from here and that my roots lie in corruption-laden society where there is no solution in sight in the forseeable future

Just register on the forum, but will like to say that Nigerians are good at talking about others but forgetting about what evils they are committing secretly,I have been working in delta state for 10 years and whenever the issue's of ibori's embezzlement comes up among my deltan colleagues they will tell you that na his own time to chop their own time will come, that is why I waited patiently to comment on nairaland before making comments.we should all search our conscience as a Nigerian to see whether in our own small way how corrupt we are.Almost every transaction in Nigeria have an element of bribery and corruption, and when we sum all the small small corruption together,it now results to the big masquerade chasing us around.Let's starts to change our ways and lessen our zeal to get rich and know that if you are not destined to be rich you can never be rich on material things but of you are rich in mind and thinking it should be enough.

EFCC has no blame they are not to convict offenders. Judiciary keep throwing out cases on flimsy technical grounds, what can any EFCC do.

Ibori and uduaghan are from the same grandmother, so the money will still end up in the clan, shikena.
