French Socialist Francois Hollande has won most votes in the first round of the country's presidential election, early results show.

They suggest he got more than 28% of votes against about 26% for centre-right incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy.

The two men will face each other in a second round on 6 May.

Mr Sarkozy said it had been a "crisis vote" and called for three presidential debates before the run-off. The poll has been dominated by economic worries.

Far-right candidate Marine Le Pen came third with about 19% of the vote, ahead of seven other candidates.

The estimates - based on votes counted in polling stations that closed early at 18:00 (16:00 GMT) - were announced by French media when all voting ended at 20:00.

sarkozy has been misfiring of recent especially in his utterance. As only hope he'll not learn his lesson in the hard way.

Hollande won the first round. He didn't "win Sarkozy". You don't win your opponent, you win a contest, game, prize etc.

It's just a narrow lead so nothing to worry about yet. Hollande supporters should savor this win but I bet you, Sarkosy will bounce back....Incumbency will play yet again a major part in the final votes. So, let's watch and see.

Good for Sarkozy. He (Sarkozy) is a traitor and back stabber. He will be finally nailed on the 6th May.

It would be very difficult but not impossible for Sarkosy to win this one cause the Nationalist party rules by Marine Le pen will decide to vote for none of these candidates...wait and see

^^I think defeating Sarkozy will be very difficult come May 6th, Far-right candidate Marine Le Pen came third with almost 20% of the votes and the posibility of that far-right party uniting behind Sarkozy can't be ruled out, now that anti Eu and schengen zone policies is set to dominate that final round of the election.

I see this as good news...SARKOZY has become very unpopular lately especially with the inglorious role he played in the overthrown &death of GADDAFFI.am dropping no tears for him!

It will be very difficult, but not impossible. Sarkosy won the Kuomintang rule caused by marine Le Pen will vote neither of these candidates.

The surprising rise of far right nationalist across Europe is alarming.I wouldn't want to see Sarkozy back in power for any reason.Hope Hollande defeats him.
