Just few days after after James Ibori was convicted for corruption by a London Court, embattled former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu may have started his own slow walk to prison as he was on the 27th of April 2012 floored at the Court of Appeal where the learned Justices told him he had cases related to corrupt enrichment and financial crime to answer. This ruling sets the tune for the trial of the Governor seen to have grossly converted most of Abians’ collective resources to his personal property.
A mild drama ensued at the court premises as his erstwhile array of supporters were spotted dancing and jubilating after the ruling. The most prominent of those making this volte face was Comrade Chris Akomas, his party’s (PPA) Gubernatorial candidate in the 2011 elections in Abia. Akomas led other aggrieved former supporters among whom were Ebere Nwachukwu, Jonas Chibuike and Donatus Nwankpa. Abia State PPA rag tag Chairman Ezeogo Emeka Onuoha almost sprained his ankle while jumping in jubilation.Apart from these Supporters believe that OUK is guilty as charged, they are particularly not happy with the kind of treatment OUK meted out to them shortly after the 2011 general elections. Majority of them drummed support for OUK’s failed bid to go the Senate on the ticket of Abia North. It was also gathered that these friends now turned foes observed that OUK was always in the habit of using and dumping people. Their latest reaction to the court ruling is a way of paying him back in his own coin.
History students are however viewing this development from the perspective of the long perceived character of NDI NGWA who sustain relationships so long as they cheat you. It is therefore not surprising that the bulk of those castigating and abandoning OUK at this critical stage of his political career are NDI NGWA.
So much to learn from this development.
