Unknown gunmen have
launched an attack in
Potiskum, at the largest cattle
market in Yobe state, leaving
34 persons dead. The attack
which was carried out late
Wednesday night, lasted for
about fifteen minutes.
According to a police source
who claimed anonymity “the
34 bodies have been deposited
at the hospital and the toll is
likely to more than 50 dead
because families are also
burying relatives’ bodies
without bringing them to the
hospital.”
Witnesses say the gunmen
arrived the Potiskum cattle
market, shooting sporadically
into the air.
Unconfirmed reports claim the
reason for the attack was to
avenge the death of a man who
was burnt alive for attempting
to steal a cow in the market,
earlier on Wednesday.
According to the witnesses
account, two of the gunmen
had earlier attacked the
market on Wednesday
morning, snatching a dealer’s
money and a cow, but luck ran
out of them as they were
apprehended by the cattle
traders.
One of the robbers was
immediately set ablaze while
the others remained in the
traders’ custody.
Later that evening, the market
came under siege with gun
attack by the gunmen who
shot randomly at those in the
market.
