I opened a thread on this matter a while back. I have to say Fashola has done well in doing the right and only thing under the circumstances.

https://www.nairaland.com/929047/on-going-strike-lagos-doctors

If it was Jonathan-the-fool he would have thrown money at the doctors thereby worsening an already bad situation. All the other state govts on account of the huge publicity this matter has generated will have no choice but be hard put to compromise masses oriented services in favour of some already well paid but very greedy civil servants.

A certain fellow who claims to practice in Abuja as a paid doctor claims her sympathy is altruistic. But she forgot she said on this forum that she is being retained by her pvt employers on CONMESS (or CONSHIT)scale. In order words if the strike succeeds she can call her employers for a re-negotiation.Which is why some pple say 'its always about the money'.

Another 'clever doctor' did an off hand calculation and arrived at what it will cost LASG without figuring in the nurses, lab scientists, pharmacists, radiographers etc etc.

All talks about a previous agreement that was extracted from the govt should be ignored like it did not happen. The govt could even have signed to deliver the state treasury into the hands of doctors' union in order to have sanity, but we know that cannot happen.

The only thing the people can hope for is that Fashola being the politician that he is remains steadfast and does not waver. The people behind this criminal conduct are mostly medical officers who are under 10yrs in practice. They are doctors of fortune who will do anything for money. The more experienced and responsible ones cant be bordered and are comfortable with things as they are. In as little as five working days Lagos hospitals will function at 100% prestrike doctor capacity if the state govt is serious about it. No use worrying about the sacked ones they wont be hungry. They have a will to make money and so there will be ways for them.

For the house officers who are being used, it is up to them to either return back immediately and complete housemanship or go with their rogue colleagues. Meanwhile they should not forget hundreds of their colleagues who may have finished med school before them who have not been fortunate for years to get placement for housemanship.

The guild is a real disgrace to all Nigerian doctors working as medical professionals or not.

Yes we recognize the criminality going on in govt. We see the daily scandal and the thievery going on in the houses of assembly both at state and Federal levels. Even all the action going on at the councillor and local govt chairmen levels. We cannot duplicate that in our hospitals and hold patients to ransome. The councillors, Local Govt chairmen and the honourable members are our collective problem and we will deal with them at an appropriate time.

My friend if u think replacing professors, consultants in all specialties with a year post NYSC doctors is going to make lagos function with 100% prestrike capacity, you must be psychotic.
If thiis continues the medical school will be shut in weeks as all accreditation will be lost.......not maybe.........will be........
Houseofficers will not finish their postings there.........it requires that Heads of each departments sign their papers but as they have all been sacked......maybe the corper and a year post nysc person will be appointed HOD.
Many are being very myopic..........my advice to all........do not hace accidents, do not need surgery for any purpose this period........
Only God knows how it will all end

For your information; Issues
concerning the Nigerian Medical
Association,Medical guild of Lagos.
The consolidated medical salary scale
is the salary structure designed by the
federal government 4years ago with the aim of providing a uniform salary
scale for doctors irrespective of the
state,kind of hospital,and
specialisation. With an annual
increment denoting years of
experience. Most states in the country immediately
began paying conmess in full.
2years after this,the medical guild
wrote several letters to the government
to remind them of conmess as they
were yet to be paid. The governor then SIGNED an agreement that he would
commence payment in 2011 with
arrears being owed.
The federal government made it clear
that if conmess is paid, Doctors would
ignore the poor work conditions, work extended hours like they have been
but this time they would be happy
doing it, they wouldn't have to leave
the country to work abroad, more
people would be encouraged to train
as doctors and the health of the people would be secured.
Tax was increased, conmess was not
paid, work conditions were not
improved, doctor's lives were lost to
stress related illnesses. Call rooms
were not provided for doctors on call. When Mr Fashola was reminded in
January,he simply said the President
couldn't dictate how much he would
pay doctors in his state, and the tax
increase was necessary so we can get
used to it INCASE he agrees to implement conmess! He said he
couldn't afford to pay conmess(but
could plan the most expensive
birthday party in the World for Mr
Tinubu)
We then embarked on a legal 3day warning strike with prior notice to
sensitize the people and remind the
government of the signed agreement
On resumption,all doctors were given
individual query letters(for a joint
action?). Another one was issued, then letters were issued for "call to panel /
impending dismissal from duty". A
week later, armour tanks were brought
to all lagos general hospitals and
teaching hospital Lasuth ikeja,with
doctors walked out of their clinics while seeing patients. The Med guild
immediately called for an indefinite
strike and the lagos state government
sued for breech of agreement and
Victimisation of doctors.
Fake pay slips were published in the papers 2weeks ago claiming doctors
were being paid as much as 900,000
whereas a medical professor of
20years has never been paid as much
as 500,000.
A Neurosurgeon(brain surgeon) consultant still collects 171,000 as
salary. Be informed we have only less
dan 20 in Nigeria(2of them with lagos
state,they trained in America,they have
both been sacked!).They work round
the clock(we have enough head injuries daily due to road traffic
accidents).
3days ago,we were issued sack letters
and 97 doctors(not 373 like u heard)
were employed as locum doctors
(doctors paid per hour). These locum doctors need residents and
consultants to put them through.
It takes years of experience to perform
a caesarian section on a woman or a
brain surgery(esp bore hole to relieve
increased brain pressure or blood in d brain) or an appendectomy or treat a
sick child or even to help a mentally ill
patient.
NMA has made it clear that the newly
appointed doctors should not & would
not accept the job offer, and that all doctors across the nation would join in
the strike against victimization on friday
after the on going professional exams.
The issue is now beyond CONMESS
struggle - the government is aiming to
devour the medical and dental profession.
Be informed that doctors are not
slaves,our Hippocratic oath explains
that we owe an obligation to our
patients and they owe an obligation to
us and our services must be paid for. Thanks for taking time to read this. I
hope you have been well informed.

isreal012: If truly the doctors really care about the people and the well being of this state/nation then, they should have considered the patients they left on the beds and the health state of the people they are being paid to make well, rather than their selfish interest, asking for "consolidation" at the expense of the poor masses. God will Judge Them.
its fashola that spent 2billion on a birthday that God will judge....

Meanwhile, confusion and lull took over at the General Hospital, Badagry, on Tuesday following the sacking of the 788 striking doctors by the Lagos State government.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent in Badagry reported that the doctors were unavailable at the hospital to be served their letters.

Only nurses and health officials were seen at their duty posts providing skeletal services to some patients.

So where were the newly employed doctors? The limits of propaganda will soon be seen.
Re: Lagos Sacks Striking Doctors by Pennywise(m): 4:21pm On May 09, 2012
@Ngak
This medical doctor calls someone who dared to express a contrary opinion on a public forum psychotic. I am tempted to call you a filthy field mouse and a church rat, but I wouldnt. Everyone can see the open display of gangsterism by this so called doctor and mouthpiece of strike engineers.

You are loud and desperate. Your views does nothing to assuage the presently held belief that doctors are a bunch of greedy parasitic lot. You tried to justify an unjust strike by propagating lies and falsehood. House officers here have acknowledged 173k/mth and u claim a neurosurgeon gets paid 171k?
A Neurosurgeon(brain surgeon) consultant still collects 171,000 as
salary.

It is common knowledge that when rascals within the ranks of doctors want to forment trouble they frequently use senior and respected colleagues as fulcrum to attack the govt even if these erudite doctors cannot, will not ever be seen to be associated with them.

A
week later, armour tanks were brought
to all lagos general hospitals and
teaching hospital Lasuth ikeja,with
doctors walked out of their clinics while seeing patients.

Everyone knows that the reason the state govt requested for additional security is because gangsters like you were trying to force out dutiful and conscientious doctors from their consulting rooms.

3days ago,we were issued sack letters
and 97 doctors(not 373 like u heard)
were employed as locum doctors
(doctors paid per hour). These locum doctors need residents and
consultants to put them through.

Every medical doctor consultants inclusive can do locum. A single letter is all that is needed to convert them to substantive employees of Govt. Keep watching.

It is arrogance exhibited by individuals like this that gives Nigerian doctors a bad name. Employers anywhere should be on the look out for them as only one treatment is good enough: an instant dismissal otherwise called SACK.

Update from Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Jan 2012!!

Total No of Doctors Produced in Nigeria Since independence 52years Ago. = 42,575!

Those on Register currently=22,000!! Meaning 20,575 are either out of d country, dead or in different profession!!

Out of the 22,000 registered, 12,821 are in Private Practice! 9,179 are working with Government all over the 36 states in d Country!! 9179 minus Luth 800= 8,379,- 1,051 UCH =7328,- 602 UNIPORT=6726,- 587 NSUkkA =6,139,- 440 ABU Zaria,=5699,- 312 UNIMAID =5,387, - 217Unilorin =5,170, -302 UniBen =4868, - 76 Uthman Dan Fodio sokoto=4792, - 1532 in all Federal Medical Centres=3260, - 219 great IFe=3,041"""""""""""""""""""". A total of 3041 are been shared by d 36 states Governments,
If Lagos state employs abt 800 then d remaining 35 states including Abuja shared 2241!! Less than 80Doctors per State per Average!!

So from where will they get new doctors to replace the very experienced ones they have sacked?

Lagos govt is deceiving and killing Lagos people!! Liars presenting corper doctors as new recruits, expecting a corper of 2weeks experience to do d work of a consultant of 20years standing!! Its like sacking Wole Olanipekun and then asking a fresh lawyer from law school to go nd do his work!! It can't just Work!!!!

Why does Gov Fashola pay Lagos Judges higher than the Federal ones, yet he says he can't pay Doctors like Federal..is it because he is a SAN?...

CONMESS is the minimum wage salary scale for doctors across Nigeria just like the general N18,000..., lecturers scale, teachers scale and others

Lagos govt SIGNED an agreement to pay this minimum doctors wage last year but is now claiming they don't have enough money to pay

Why enter into an agreement because of election and upon being elected fail to keep it.
Re: Lagos Sacks Striking Doctors by misviva: 8:44pm On May 12, 2012
its rather unfortunate the way we view things, ive been reading along this forum and i realise that we as fellow nigerians are not our brothers keeper. we say that the doctors who went on strike should all be sacked because they were asking for higher wages n lower tax but we fail to realise that their jobs are time consuming, hazardous and indeed stressful. we all know that the government can afford to pay the doctors what they are asking for so why did they not implement this before they went on strike? in every hazardous profession im not even talking about doctos now, salaries are usually higher. we celebrate theives in our society and castigate the right. this, like everyone has been saying is the reason for the brain drain from all professions in nigeria not only the medical field. until the uneducated folks on the streets understand the value of professionals in our society we are all just writing for fun cos that is the major populace that is brain washed to believe nonsense.
