tosank: Edos are beautiful people. I understand the mainstream Yoruba share a lot with the Edos in history, culture and even language. I wanna ask if Edos truly see themselves as Yorub, and what percentage speak the mother Yoruba tongue, even if it is a second language.

Someone should answer the freaking second question

Alj Hareem, why do you people always like to claim the edos? they are distinct people and you should learn to accept that fact, that they answer youbas names doesn't mean they are Yorubas. Is Goodluck Ebere azikiwe Jonathan an Igbo man? please stop this rubbish, are the igbanke people in Bini also Youruba?

How would you feel if someone asked you if Yoruba people see themselves as Nupe? Your question is daft and insulting.

Why do you Nairalanders always have this innate urge to annex other people's ethnic groups just because they're not as 'populous' as you are?

I hope, for your sake, this isn't how you all reason in reality. Because if it is, then that is one seriously dangerous way of life undecided

I don't have time for all this rubbish, I am waiting for real edo people not some Imo or anambra okoro man. I would not let Andre and co drag Igbos into this.

Again I stated clearly that Yorubas are not claiming Edo people. We do not claim, Yes we share history together and they were part of the first empire. Now it is completly upto them to chose. Again we the yorubas don't have such complexes to be claiming, it is not for us.

All we are doing here is sharing history not claiming edos are yoruba.

Maybe some of you need to get reading glasses.

Edos' are the beloved of the Yorubas, i grew up learning to see the Edos as people we share our cultural heritage with. You cannot separate Yorubas and Edos because we came from the same people. So yes Edo is Yoruba and Yoruba is Edo! You dig?

Andre Uweh:
What a brainless thread. am sure this poster is not silly in real life, probably just enjoys displaying stupidity in a public forum.
I have never seen nor read where fools in Europe ask English people if they feel like Germans. Things like this are very common in Nigeria.
@The O.P, PLEASE QUIT INSULTING EDO PEOPLE.
wHY NOT MAKE SENSE FOR ONCE, EVEN TODAY BEING SATURDAY.
My your idiotic calculation, Chibuike Rotimi Amadi is Yoruba.
Chukwuemeka Bamidele Azikiwe is Yoruba, etc.
Why do you guys enjoy insulting Edos?.

U cant compare an Enlish Man/German man with Nigeria.

Thats country to country, and
this is tribe to tribe interwoven
for that matter!

It makes no sense that a thread which is a repeat of Obiagu's is on the front page when Obiagu's thread was itself on the front page.

@ the original poster, if everyone said that the Edo were in fact Yoruba and that 1000% of them saw themselves as Yoruba, what difference would it make? Why do you even care?

PapaBrowne: How on earth can we see ourselves as Yorubas?? Where do you live?? Why are Yorubas so love struck with the Binis?? Its a goods thing though! We love you back.

First, Edos have a well documented history and culture that dates back to the 9th century. Well documented I said.
Secondly, Edo is a forbear of various ethnic groups both in the country and outside. These groups have their history and ancestory tied to the EDO heritage. From Uhrobos to Itsekiris to Isokos in the south all the way to Lagos in the west. Interestingly, the whole of Lagos traditional rulership was set up by the Binis. The word Eko is a Bini word. Ever wonder why it is called the Oba of Lagos?
While I wouldn't want to argue history here I would just tell you to judge between these two accounts

Yorubas say Oduduwa fell from heaven.
Edos say Oduduwa was the son of of an Ogiso whose name is Izoduwa(bini word) who was banished from the kingdom. The Benin account is very detailed and laced with real and practical stories and names. The Yoruba account is mere Floklore. Judge for yourself which is right.

The question should be whether the Yorubas see themselves as Edos and not the other way round. And I believe the answer is yes, which is why Yorubas have this love affinity with everything Bini.
thank you my brother, osadebawe. You have just reveal the basic fact . And to add to it, benin is one but yoruba is not

Anthony Enahoro's middle name was Eromosele. I don't know why somebody (alj harem) would just pick a random Yoruba name and claim it was his middle name.

That's not exclusive to the Bini.

Not quite clear why there's any friction but it seems to go both ways.
