THE Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has hailed Anambra State Governor Peter Obi’s programmes, saying they have helped to raise the profile of the state and its people.

Director-General of the body, Mr. Asishana Okauru said Anambra residents should be proud of their governor.

Former governor of Cross River State Donald Duke said Obi has left memorable legacies in the state.

They spoke at the launch of the NGF’s States Peer Review Mechanism (SPRM) in the state.

At the event Governor Obi announced he would build an ultra-modern Governor’s Lodge and Government House in Awka, the state capital, before he leaves office in 2014.

Chairman of the NGF, and River State Governor Rotimi Amaechi said the SPRM subjects policies and programmes in each of the federation to expert analysis.

Amaechi was represented by the Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan.

“It is our hope that through participation in the peer review process, state governors will be able to learn from their peers about innovative and good practices that they could adapt and adopt in their respective states,” Uduaghan said.

The event was jointly sponsored by the Department for International Development, the NGF and Anambra State government.

Mr. Julius Court, of the DFID, said the programme was aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians by opening up opportunities for them.

Mr. John Litivack, of the World Bank, said the SPRM is meant to harness potentials through best practices and to strengthen the framework of governance.

The Chairman of the Millennium Development Goals implementation Committee in Anambra State, Prof. Chinyere Okunna, said the state was setting the pace in good governance and that Governor Obi is working hard to achieve the MDGs by 2015.

Obi said the peer review mechanism will help the state to improve on its programmes.

Various stakeholders including traditional rulers and town union leaders met for one week to examine the Anambra State Technical Review Mission on the peer review mechanism.

Country Leader of the DFID, Mr Mark Walker said Anambra is now an investors’ destination.

He said the DFID came to Anambra because of the commitment and doggedness of its governor.

Duke who is a member of the National Steering Committee of the SPRM said Obi has left enduring legacies.

“It doesn’t make sense that after eight years of being a governor, the occupant of that office will not walk freely with his people,” he said. “Obi will walk freely with his heads high among his people because he has left legacies everywhere.”

The former governor said Obi has done well even though the state’s cash allocation is much less what some other under-achieving states have.

Okauru said Anambra people should be proud of Peter Obi because of his dedication, commitment to the growth of the state.

The state Commissioner for Economic Planning, and chairman of the state peer review mechanism steering committee, Prof Chinyere Okunna said Obi is striving to take the state to an enviable height.

Presenting the state self-assessment report to former Governor Donald Duke , Governor Obi said people who champion change are never loved by their people, insisting that education remains the best tool to fight poverty in the society, followed by roads and infrastructure.

Obi announced that a brewing firm which his administration attracted to the state has sent 36 Anambra youths to Kenya to learn brewing after which they wil return to teach others.

Yes!
I no be Anambra and have no affiliation to Anambra. Peter Obi is very articulate.

He's laid a solid foundation, the incoming Governor should either continue from where He stopped or create his own program.

Donald Duke, this is a low. Why will you be associated with this Nonsense? The Anambra you visited, did it look like the cross river you left behind? I only expected to see orji ,uduaghan and obi because they are birds of a feather. I know obi will do anything for publicity but dont let him use you. Let him continue buying awards and paying journalists. He has done nothing concrete in the state!! Every Anambra person is painfully waiting for 2014. Let me believe that this is a mockery

Those governors must have entered Awka with helicopter. Had it been that they travelled to Awka with carz, their opinion on Peter Obi's achievements would have changed.
