Dude it's Sintel. And The Blender Foundation's got more tech and training than the all the "animators" in Nigeria put together. Dude those guys created Blender!

You are right, it's Sintel. I had a nagging feeling I didn't get it right. Thanks. That's how collaboration works! The level of skill at the beginning is irrelevant. The point is everyone become better through interaction. And does it really matter if they have more tech than us? You have to start from where you are. They didn't get to where they are now in a single day.

By the way, I and some other guys have started "3ds Lagos", a Lagos based 3ds Max user group. The European 3ds Max rep for EMEA is in full support of the group, and will be providing whatever support Autodesk can muster. It's completely free to attend, and is meant to provide a meeting point for people using 3ds max where ideas, techniques and industry news can be shared. Chaosgroup is also offering a fully functional commercial V-Ray 2.0 License as a prize to a winner from the group for any competition we hold.

In relation to the price of software, if it's Autodesk, you can get the free educational license. There's even a version for the unemployed artist/architect/special effect professional, etc as well. It's fully functional, no watermark, and is valid for 3 years. That is what I use, and no problems at all with it. Just check the Autodesk site.

If d issue is seeing a professional n worthy demoreel, then hi end workstations r nt imperative.

A screen grab from within ur app serves just fine.
Wot d pros will b looking for is d quality of d animation consistent wit d principles governing animation, not all d perks n effects dat wow d audience.
Ive been tested wher camera movt n textures were forbidden

Lots of 3d apps ,run on ur average workstations wit a decent card. Animation Master and even Autodesks Motionbuilder will give u real time playback even with ur Ikeja 70k lappy.

If d issue is a fully rendered hi res finished work complete wit sound, lol, dats a diff ball game.

So again, wot r we talking abt?

your ikeja 70k lappy is one of those hp630s with intel graphics - not a dedicated graphics card




as to your -lots of 3d apps run - they dont run - they crawl

i hope you enjoy sitting in front of your pc for several minutes while it struggles with commands and then crashes the app as you run out of ram


these are the requirements of motionbuilder 2012. good luck with anything beyond installing motion builder on your '70k lappy'

it is important to have ambition, but it is also important to be a realist.

maybe you're right anyway, what are the specs of the systems you use?

hope we r nt derailing d thread focus.

Point om making is, u dont need an alienware or systemax to assemble a decent xter animation demo reel.

U also dnt need awesome, time/processor intensive renders to show ur animation skill.

Check out 11secondclub...some of d winning entries were playblasts from within d apps.

Yes, i agree that ur ikeja average lappy isnt ideal but im pointing out possible workarounds for our unique environment. If u have limitations, u can still get a good reel out wit average tools (n mad determination, lol).

I use a kickass workstation presently but b4 i cld afford it, i used ur average lappy. I therefore sought out d least processor intensive apps and adjusted my workflow to suit my machine.

Id animate very lo res models til i was kool wit d motions, i stayed away from latest releases of d apps (inspite of d hype)
we r constantly installin d latest apps thinking dats d key to great work. I only recently bought maya2011, prior to dat i still used version 4.5 (almost 8 yrs outdated) and it ran pretty ok on d average lappy.
D key is to optimise d workflow to ur limitations.
If i have a group scene, i revert to motionbuilder n animate d xters 1 at a time, substituting others wit primitives.
Motionbuilder will let u animate in real time wit d same scene n machine specs dat maya or max will not.
Its all abt thinking outside d box.
I think we r derailing d thread focus wit jargon, lol.

I dnt think d problem is dat we lack good players in naija, its dat they r too busy chasing international cash to post demos here just for bragging rights.
Even dis forum has a few worthy practitioners...and check it out, they rarely post or have time. Dats d mark of a good artist.

One of my major clients doesnt even need my animation on models, he just requests for the base motion on d skeleton (.fbx) n applies it himself n sends to b rendered. He gets d kudos prolly n i get paid...every1 is happy (i think)

PS..i still use motionbuilder 2009. Y wld i wanna complicate my life wit d 2012 release? lol. I cnt even afford it yet.

Wow...It's been really long...OKX i hail ooo... So you have been getting all these international contract jobs and not sharing them abi?lol....

This is a topic i won't comment much on on cause we've been over this sooooo many times over the years...Truth is, till there's funding for a major project.. everybody go dey find him belle...And OKX is right...there are a lot of talented Nigerians in this field, but passion can only take you so far, We have gotten older and priorities change....Gotta put food on the table..
Omo..i shouldn't even be talking, the last time i did any actual dedicated modelling and animation was over a year ago...*Cooked up a 1 minute animated short in a week for some contest(Not the best of efforts i might add..should probably upload it for critique...since it's been sitting in my pc)..
Like i said..i needed to make money...And so these days i do more video production(while still trying to make time to finish my pc game titi tilapia www.tititilapia.com...I still use 3dmax often but these days it's usually to create some small element i want to composite in a live video shot.
Summary...Keep up ur hustle, keep learning, keep working, if the opportunity comes, collaborate....Our time will come

what makes you feel our team of animators learnt 3d free & are trying to rip people off? we've spent money buying lots of e-books on animation & we're nt talking about peanuts. have you ever asked yourself why some materials on animation are offerred for free & some are sold? if you think you'll get to dreamworks standard using only free tutorials,then you're not yet ready. our course fee aint too expensive considering the kind of materials(original) that would be given. however,we kinda understand where you're looking at it from but trust me;we're not ripping people off. we've done stuffs(motion graphics though) for mtn(project fame),nigerian breweries(star quest,gulder ultimate search,maltina dance all),ultra deodorants,mountain dew,just to mention a few. jobs were gotten through a third party though. we're currently doing animated commercials for two telecom networks & one of Nigeria's biggest banks. If we dont know what we're talking about,we wouldn't be doing this. Trust me.

And let it be known to all: We're not claiming to be the alpha & omega of 3d animation in Nigeria;no! We're still perfecting our skills as we realise that there are lots of talented guys out there. That's one of the reasons why we put up an animation training to get more wizards on our team for the i-revolution project.

Like u rightly said, some1 has 2 pick up d tab 4 any quality work, so we r working on creatin a financial cushion first. Only then can we artists collab effectively.
Dnt stray too far from d 3d train tho, albeit in d name of survival.

iv attended courses whose equivalent trumped ur charges, hav even bought single resources @ close to dat value. Trust d value of ur content n bill accordingly (altho reasonably) i wld pay 400k 4 a course if i believed d worth.
D challenge i think, is publicising who u r n wot uv done first. Dat will help doubters.

U also know we think from a pirates point of view, even a lotta of these 'free' online resources r ppls work, bought then illegally shared or plagiarised.
Professiomal video tutes rarely cost less than 500USD for mayb one part of five series..lol

3d skill is an international skill and shd b valued as such. Crude oil is not valued in naira, ppl.

I did forget ...On a whim, i sent it in for the African international Film Festival and it was an Official selection...
It has flaws...lots infact...but it was entirely done in a week on a deadline and finally forced me to do charcter animation...so there...Fell free to comment and critique ...hehehe..

looking at that Shrek-like character you are sporting there, I would conclude that character modeling isnt one of your strengths. And therefore doubt your ability to teach character animation too. You may be able to teach normal object animation and modeling but I wont bet my money on you when it comes to characters.

Firstly, I think that is the most hideous animated character reel I have ever seen. Secondly- haba guy!- u had to go steal someelse's animation school logo to market ur 400,000 naira animation training course. That caveman logo u used belongs to The Animation School in SouthAfrica. Let's just hope ur students are far more silly than I am. And I read somewhere where u said u spent 4 million naira learning computer graphics and animation, I have got to say u are either not entirely truthful or a very slow learner. No disrespect. I cant even boast of spending up to 50k learning animation (and I am still learning) but my characters are far better than that on ur reel. I think it is time we graphics artists and animators started taking ourselves seriously and stop all this plagiarism; using other peoples model and other peoples animated scenes and passing them off as our own so that people can call us "badt guys". Character animation is one of the hardest things to do in CG. It takes a lot of time learning, hardwork, reading and observing to get it right. It is science. It is arts. It is not for every Tom, Dick and freaking Harry. But when u pay the price of learning and doing ur homework, u always reap the reward of fun and probably fiscal pay-offs too if that is the ultimate goal for u.

Dude did u read what I wrote very well at all? I said I cant boast of spending up to 50k learning animation. And by the way, I was talking about the money spent in accessing the internet and downloading materials. And I also do not intend using free tutorials all my life. It is good to learn a few tricks from the masters especially in online workshops and that involves parting with a few bucks sometimes. Think about that.

I am guessing u use Blender. I use Blender too and I use Python and The Gimp. So I have to say nobody cares more about free stuffs than an open-source apologist like myself. But I am not talking about the wrong masters. I am talking about people who have actually done work on popular Hollywood movies and animated feature films. I am talking about guys like Shawn Kelly of Industrial Light & Magic one of the lead animators of Transformers. And guys like Jason Ryan. U will find a lot of them on CGsociety.com. Some teach animation, others teach compositing or matte painting or even advanced modeling. And they usually organise workshops; very good ones at that. It is good to use free tutorials but ur skill level will grow up to an extent in which u will need to pay to learn more good tricks of the trade. At least I hope to get to that point soon.
