Police Fire Tear Gas At Surging Crowd At Lagos Air Crash Site by Nobody: 12:14pm On Jun 04, 2012 |
LAGOS (AFP) – Nigerian police fired tear gas on Monday as a crowd surged at the site of a devastating plane crash in the country’s largest city of Lagos that killed all 153 people on board. A crowd trying to get a look at the wreckage sought to break though a police barricade in one area at the site, prompting police to fire tear gas, an AFP correspondent reported. The crowd of about 2,000 people retreated but later returned, looking on from rooftops and other areas. Rescue workers have so far pulled at least 62 bodies from the wreckage, an official said as searches pressed on at the site of the devastation. A spokesman for the country’s accident investigation bureau said all those on board were considered dead. Two cranes arrived early Monday to clear debris and allow rescue workers better access to the densely populated area near the airport where the Dana Air plane crashed on Sunday. “Sixty-two bodies recovered so far,” a rescue official said on condition of anonymity. A church, a two-storey residential building and a printing shop were badly damaged at the site. The number of those killed on the ground remained unclear. Smoke was still rising from the scene and water trucks were also brought in to douse the smouldering wreckage. “We were lucky. We just finished our church service when this thing happened,” one resident at the scene on Monday morning said. One woman, who said that her uncle had been aboard the plane, asked rescue workers if she could have access to the site, but they refused, saying the bodies were unrecognisable. President Goodluck Jonathan has declared three days of national mourning for victims of the crash. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/06/breaking-news-police-fire-tear-gas-at-surging-crowd-at-lagos-crash-site/ |

But to be sincere those crowd can hinder there operation, though they're said to be all dead, but they should at least give them space to work. |

It's hard to comprehend that some people were looting. Anyway it's a common sight in Nigeria. That's how they would gather around accidented fuel tanker. Some components that go into the making and running an airplane is dangerous to health. Anyway if there is something more than tear-gas but not fatal let them use it. |

But seriously, why do Nigerians scavenge at the scene of accidents either looking for victims' properties or trying to snap pictures instead of helping out the victims ? |

^^^ it is really pathetic. I heard of a gist one time, of a man(casual observer) at a car accident scene liting up his cigarette from a burning vehicle. |

Those Lagos street boys are attracted to scenes of death and destruction simply to steal whatever they can from the dead and dying victims, and maybe also to "salvage" a few human parts for later sale to Juju witch-doctors. Ironically, such opportunistic instant crowds are referred to by the Nigerian press as "sympathizers". Police should use live ammunition to thin out the hyena herds at that crash site, before they steal aircraft parts that may be crucial for the investigations into the cause of the mishap. 1 Like |

Nigerians sha! You're not an emergency worker, a police, fire fighter, first aider, relative of the deceased or a journalist or any of the people needed at the site, so why go there in the first place? i'm with the police on this one, people love being treated like animals. |

bright007: How about helping to put out the fire. Just because there were no announced survivors doesn't mean that nothing should be done. |

Why is it hard to figure the attraction of vultures or hyenas to carrion? It is in the nature of scavengers. |

A thorough search on Agence France Presse website returned no result for this tear gas firing report. I ran the search because I was present at the crash site till 1:30 PM this Monday. The military personnel almost cause stampede while charging towards the crowds apparently to disperse them. But there was no tear gas fired. I was standing at the top of a beleaguered neighborhood building overlooking the Julius Berger earth moving equipments clearing debris. |

bright007: Are you this retarrded ? A plane suddenly went down, burst into flames and everybody in the plane will die instantly ? How do you conclude so easily when folks who ought to conduct rescue and search went about scavenging the victims' belongings ? |

akinalabi:that's how they cluster like bees at every accident scene peeping, gossiping and snapping pictures as if they are in a movie location instead of trying to rescue the surviving victims. The worst being that, they won't rescue them and they won't give way for the rescue team to rescue them too, rather they would prefer to gossip & snap pictures and shouting eeyahhh while the survivors keep on giving up the ghost. |

Some questions that need answers. An observer alleged tht someone trapped in the plane made calls to his family to let them know what happened. he said it took about 5 mins or so before explosion. is this true? How long did it take for rescue workers to get there? Is there any chance that if proper measures were in place, some lives could have been saved? the pilot made a call to report the incident 11 nautical miles (21 km)to airport. what effort was made by ground emergency officials? 1 Like |
