Good people in the how, I just got a Peugeot 406 Salon car, 2001 model. I was using Honda before. How reliable is this car and it maintenance?

Which Honda did you trade for this car? Was it too old or faulty?

@op lovely car you got there , look for a good mechanic for the servicing and you will enjoy it because asking if it's good after buying it is a negative question

well am enjoying mine, maintainance is relatively cheap. Was it converted from right 2 left? Well most importantly get a good mech.

I used the 406 for 6 years (2003-2009) very rugged and reliable car, but i always did my service and checks at NMI Motors or certified Peugeot motor companys when i travel to other states but one thing i observed....get rid of it once the mileage hits 180k cos all sort of electrical problems start springing up.

This really brings back memories of the day I washed my dads factory brand new 406 and decided to take it for a spin even though i didn't know how to reverse guess I got tempted with how good looking the car was. Funny enough i was told to wash the car cos someone just bought it of my dad and was suppose to come and pick it up that same day..... what lingers in my mind whenever I see one these is what would happened if had crashed the car.

A very reliable and rugged machine. This is my second 406 in the last five years. Very stable and well balanced on long distance. As someone said earlier, trade off after a while.... u dont want to face the electrical problems when it starts getting old.

BUT......troublesome when it reaches a particular mileage starting wit sensor then other tins....

Any peugeot brand is rugged and reliable... all u need is regular services from time to time... Those who use this brand know it!

Very correct! Once it starts its problem, you may not be able to get it fixed. the cost of maintenence is high in Nigeria here. Aside that, it is a good ride.

When it develops gearbox problem real wahala don start o becouse the brain box attached to the gear box is custom made for it,thus replacing the gearbox becomes a very big problem(for the automatic version)

Zoomzoom my broda, shutling between Abuja and Zaria weekly will definitely wear and tear any car. 406 is very durable,what is importance is the maintainace culture. My CRV Jeep is 4 years and I have never had any issue, apart from servicing which I do monthly with 2000k to 4000K as the case may be.

Thank you all for your words of encouragement and sharing your experiences. I have no problem with mentanance because I give everything that concerns me its own priority. The baby will land in couple of weeks time.

As an addition to what others said earlier.

This car is relatively cheap in terms of maintenance. It uses two version of engines (black top approx 80k) and (aluminium top about 170k prestige version).

The body parts are also cheap and available together with the suspension though not all.

It is strong vehicle and and a kind of charges faster on a long journey, I remember racing to Awka with it within 7 hours from Lagos few years back without any problem.

All you need is to get a good mechanic and a pro auto rewire.

My only headache with it is that it is very rare to get it in Auto drive unless the one coverted here in naija .For ruggedity and fuel economy, it is very ok.

Any day it gives you a wiring problem, just hala me and I will give its medicine and it will cruise and sleep.

I use a peugeot too, nice car but I'd recommend you stand and watch anyone opening your bonnet.
The components in the car are really delicate, the alternator drive belt cuts inexplicably at times (I wonder why), Its not good with water (floods and all) and you must follow the servicing/ replacement schedule to get the best from the car.
The Haynes manual for your model would also be important for you to understand your car intimately.

The 'FOX' 406, is highly stable and durable. My best ride for long distance journies. Good fuel economy, very rugged suspensions, perfect stability on high speed, and comfortable interior with nice a.c chilling. Maintenance is cheaper than all japanese cars. Original and geniune spare parts are readily available and very cheap unlike toyota and honda parts. Another advantage is that the shock absorbers don't get bad, u only change linkages. The fox dislikes flood and dust. Don't wash ur engine with water and always change ur air cleaner/dust puruifier. Auto drive version is not recommended. The auto gerar box is problematic. The manual gear box costs 5k and hadly spoils. FOX is the best car for Nigerian roads.
