Boko Haram: ‘Why Northern Elements Want Azazi to Fail’

Indications emerged yesterday over plots by certain elements in the country to destabilise the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, using Boko Haram, as cover.


Sources said a group of individuals unhappy with the appointment of National Security Adviser (NSA) Gen. Andrew Azazi and some key Ministers, have vowed to destabilise the government through the perpetration of violent attacks on strategic national institutions.


The sources cited the continuous retention of the NSA as being reprehensible to the group, vowing to sabotage his efforts at combating national insecurity.


According a source, the aggrieved group is said to be angered that the all-important and strategic office of the NSA had for the first time slipped out of the hands of the north and was currently being held by “a southerner and an outsider.”


The source also maintained that the group was particularly aggrieved that President Jonathan despite discreet moves to dump Azazi have failed to yield fruit.

It was further alleged that the group had been pressurising the president through some powerful politicians and traditional rulers to sack Azazi and replace him with any of the former military chiefs who had held the office before.


Azazi who assumed the office of the NSA on October 4, 2010 became the first non-northern to be appointed security adviser since independence.

Others military chiefs who had at several period served as NSA are Aliyu Mohammed Gusau, a retired Major General who between January 2, 1990 to August 30, 1993; Abdullahi Mohammed, also a retired Major General served as NSA between July 3, 1998 to May 29, 1999; Aliyu Mohammed, a retired Lieutenant General, served as NSA between May 29, 1999 to June 1, 2006 and Sarki Mukhtar, a retired major general served as NSA between June 1, 2006 to March 8, 2010 while Gusau returned to serve between March 9, 2010 and September 20, 2010 NSA.


As one source noted, “Jonathan has no problems with the north.”

After all, millions of northerners voted for him.
Even so, sources confirmed that there are deep fears over the safety of Jonathan if the position of the NSA slips into the hands of those currently scheming for it.
He is however keenly aware that the office of the NSA controls the Presidential Air Fleet, PAF, and therefore directly oversees his safety in the air. Some of those lobbying for the position now are persons Jonathan cannot entrust his life to.”

This is politics for you - It is downright dirty but we need it for democracy to continue. It is not important that the leaders on northern states are uncomfortable with Azazi's comments, what is important is this - what is GEJ's political strategy - BH is a political phenomena with a religious face. do not make the mistake of thinking otherwise
