Is Nigeria A Poor Or Rich Country? by ambrosini593(m): 10:03am On Jun 14, 2012
I know some people will be wondering with this question. But it calls for a serious deliberations. For sometime now we seems not to understand Nigeria status anymore. Today we are rich tomorrow we are broke and now borrowing. What type of a country is this like Nigeria? We have so many natural resources and listed among world top exporter of oil and gas but still classified as a poor country. Can a rich country borrow money? Can a country producing huge oil can be said to be poor? This country also practices and produces agricultural products and exports them as well. Countries that I know that are poor don't have oil or good farming system, but Nigeria have everything. What is wrong? Is Nigeria a poor or rich country? What's your comments

. . . . . I can't even believe that is even a question. People need to stop drinking the media hype. Compare the value of government budget with those of other countries, then link this in with population. In fact just look at gdp. I don't know why people will choose to keep on living in this "we are rich" fairy tale. Perhaps if we wake up from that ego trip then we can begin to take our role as citizens seriously.

But make no mistake about it please, we are BIG FOR NOTHING

We need to stop doing this, it is irritating. What makes a country a country, is it the fact that there is land there, if not why don't we start naming planets countries?? Tell me one country that has no people? A country is a geographical expression in the context of a people. If the people are the poor the country is poor. No need to start singing us this fairy tale of "rich land poor people, but rich country". Rich land is rich land, poor people is poor people, together you have a poor country, and Nigeria is definitely one..

Nigeria is rich in MINERAL RESOURCES. Nigeria is RICH IN HUMAN RESOURCES. Nigeria is RICH IN OIL AND GAS. These things are supposed to make any country rich in terms of economic viability, stability and progress. Also, these potentials are supposed to make any country have one of the best standards of living which is the true reflection of a rich nation. But No! Not in my country!! Cos Nigeria is ALSO RICH IN CORRUPTION. In fact naija is one of one of the richest in that regard. We have a bizarre standard of living, abysmal infrastructure, absent middle class, shameful unemployment rates, ineffective institutions. We can boast of one of world's largest population of poor people etc... Nigeria is so so F**CKING POOR my dear!

@OP - You see, it depends.

NIGERIA'S RICHES (Overflowing in abundance):
1) Corruption
2) Fraud
3) Poor leadership
4) Poor planning
5) Short-sightedness
6) Tribalism

NIGERIA'S POVERTY (Grossly lacking):
1) Forthrightness/Integrity
2) Selfless public servants
3) Long range planning
4) Discipline
5) National interest
6) Civicism - Population that holds public officers accountable

Nigeria's riches/poverty is not in the budget; it's in the people.
