The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, has said the Nigerian Army will resist any move to divide the country.

The Army Chief said fears about the possible division of the country were unfounded as the Army, which according to him, made the supreme sacrifice to keep the country together, would ensure the unity of the country.

Ihejirika stated that arrangements were in place to establish additional units of the Nigerian Army as a response to the security challenge in the country.

The Army Chief spoke at an interactive session with retired officers and reunion of Army Infantry Corps in Kaduna on Tuesday.

According to him, the Nigeria Army would establish a 3rd Battalion for the Guards Brigade under the category of Special Forces to be located in Kuje, Abuja.

He also said an Army Aviation unit would be established with the training of 40 helicopter pilots, apart from technicians that were trained at the Nigeria Air Force Base, Kaduna, and some dogs units at the various divisions of the Army.

Ihejirika commended the retired military personnel for their contributions to national development, especially in the area of security and inputs into budgetary allocation to the service.

The Army chief also praised the retired Army personnel for honoring his invitation, stressing that their presence in the ongoing 2012 Army Day celebrations was indicative of their commitment to issues involving the service.

He said, “I have great expectations that the outcome of this discussion will yield fruitful results; I therefore look forward to the buildup of the benefits of the gathering.

“I urge all present to discuss frankly as whatever is said will not be used against you.”

A retired General, Emmanuel Abioye, called on the Federal Government to enter into dialogue with the members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect.

Abioye noted that no country in the world had ever won an urban guerilla warfare since those behind it were unknown to the authorities.

He stated that resolving the issue through dialogue would ensure that soldiers were kept out of the streets.

Senator John Shagaya, also a retired general, urged the retired military personnel to ensure the provision of necessary security information to the relevant authorities in all the 774 local government areas of the country.

He also challenged the chairmen of the local government areas and the governors to live up to expectations in accordance with their oaths of office to show the expected level of commitment to the security of lives and property in their areas

He advised them to desist from the habit of running to Army commanders whenever there was crisis in their domains, but to ensure that they made the expected contributions to the security in their domains.

The Commander, Army Infantry Corp, Maj. General Mohammed Isah, said the meeting would offer the opportunity to young officers to benefit from the vast experiences of their retired counterparts.

Nigerian government along with Nigeria's military army need to realize that you cannot force a people to stay together if they have made up their minds to go their seperate ways. Trying to forcefully make people stay together can cause an outbreak of war and I think that is against people's civil and human rights. I support regionalism but if that won't work, then I guess splitting might be the only other option. The government needs to realize that people are tired of the unprecedented levels of poverty and the direction Nigeria is heading. People are also tired of the insecurity in the country. We really do not have democracy in Nigeria because in a democratic nation, the president and his cabinet will listen to the cry of the people he is ruling over. This seems not to be the case in Nigeria. The people are being ruled over like in a dictatorship leadership style.

He has spoken like a politician doing his master's bidding.

He should know that no weapon fashioned against the will and wishes of the people can prevail.

If Oil and Gas are discovered in the North , then Nigeria will divide. They still need the oil from the south to develop the North.

He has to say what his present occupied position demands of him and that is what you expect from an imperfect selfish human. But when the time comes, I bet he will be the first running around trying to be the new army chief of his new nation.
Just like Nigerian democrats, they love democracy and nothing else matters, but at the first sound of the coup gun, they will be the first to become whatever needed to become under the military and their love of democracy disappears and forgotten

The Army Chief will gain more from Nigeria than becoming an Army Chief of tiny country.
