Arsenal Football Club has announced it is reluctantly postponing its proposed trip to Nigeria this summer.

The Club has taken the decision as a result of complexities linked to the planned game against Nigeria on Saturday, August 5 in Abuja.

Arsenal marketing director Angus Kinnear said: "Bringing a top-level club to an international market is always complicated and logistically challenging. With the proposed match in Nigeria planned for early August, we could not get comfortable on everything needed to satisfy our requirements, so we have reluctantly taken the decision to postpone the team’s visit."

Kinnear continued: “We have a huge and loyal following in Africa, and we are sorry that the team will not be visiting this summer. However, we have a long-term commitment to Nigeria and we are already making plans for a visit next summer.

"In addition, we also have some exciting forthcoming activities planned with our commercial partners in Nigeria - Emirates, Airtel and Malta Guinness, which will kick off in the next few weeks.”

Emirates are the presenting partner of the Arsenal 2012 Tour and Boutros Boutros, divisional senior vice-president of corporate communications said: “Emirates shares Arsenal’s disappointment that the team’s visit to Nigeria has been postponed. We look forward to working with Arsenal to bring the Club closer to its loyal Nigerian fans through new initiatives over the coming months.”

All further updates on Arsenal’s future activities in Nigeria will be communicated on www.Arsenal.com.

See what d 'born to rule' mentality of some select few have caused us as a nation. Or, are we pretending they arent scared of boko haram too? D earlier we divide dis nation, d better. The northern folks are slowing dis nations development. This is 2012 for heaven's sake!

. Abuja shouldn't have been made one of d venues, Calabar, Lagos, Enugu, Benin, Ibadan, Àbeokuta, Owerri, Makurdi, or even ABA, could have served whatever commercial purpose that is involved. At least Kidnappers are easier to handle than suicide bombers.

They have some similarites . Arsenal, kofi Haram and Boko Haram themselves. One should bow for the other. I had however envisaged this. Good thought from my lovely club!

Boko Haram is a major factor. But then, it sounds ridiculous that they were bringing Arsenal to that grazing land called Abuja Stadium. As big as Nigeria, no good stadium with natural grass. O ma ga o
Re: Arsenal Postpone Pre-season Game In Nigeria by asidere(m): 9:19pm On Jul 05, 2012
This postponement shows that Nigeria is sick.arsenal coming to Nigeria would have been a plus for our economy when you think of how sport affects a country's economy.

Re: Arsenal Postpone Pre-season Game In Nigeria by Reference(m): 9:49pm On Jul 05, 2012
I hope this is not the first step in our isolation. Sports is always the first cue. It means Nigeria maybe ineligible to bid for hosting serious sporting activities.
Re: Arsenal Postpone Pre-season Game In Nigeria by Nobody: 10:01pm On Jul 05, 2012
I honestly woulda been very disappointed were they to have come. It would've meant the club manager hasn't got the best interests of his players at heart. 'Cause their hotel could've collapsed, or an aeroplane could've smashed into it, or it coulda gotten blown up, or their plane coulda crashed. Or they coulda been kidnapped, or contacted malaria, or typhoid, or cholera. Or their papers coulda been misplaced by airport officials.
It's really best they didn't come, 'cause Nigeria can't handle the backlash.

Reasons;1. Kobo Baram
2. No suitable Pitch in Nigeria.
Those guys can't manage to play on a bads pitch and as well risk their lives @ the expense of BH.
It was Brazil that cancelled their friendly with us, now Arsenal. You can imagine what this two high profile friendly will do to our FIFA ranking if we win. Now the most annoying thing is that; If things don't start changing for better in this Country, no nation will want to come and play football, in Nigeria and we will be denied hosting rights to many competitions. Sorry for Nija

Re: Arsenal Postpone Pre-season Game In Nigeria by bodejohn(m): 10:31pm On Jul 05, 2012
...this is why I wrote in a previous thread that it was wrong for GEJ to have said on a national tv that not travelling to Brazil would have meant that BH has grounded government activities. The foreign countries will eventually find out, he only confirmed their fears by saying it.
Before you hang me, I am not blaming GEJ for this cancellation and I did not say that he was right or wrong to have travelled to Brazil.
What I fault is his statement.
Arsenal sef no dey stop to fall person hand. I was just calculating how to draw 20K for my salary to go watch the match.

Still cant figure out why Abuja was chosen but even though Teslim Balogun stadium is small, it will be filled to capacity if Arsenal were to play there for 7 days continously
