Yes it does because if you are a subjugated and defeated people you will be under the control of an external force. In our own case we as Nigerians are a defeated people who are currently under the control of britain and america who dictate our economic and political policies.

This is why people like you think there is nothing wrong with allowing your kids to watch a western controlled media that are pumping the heads of future generations with garbage and making them focus on enjoyment rather than anything that will make them useful and productive members of society. This is the same tactic that has been used on black americans - first of all they were prohibited from gaining any form of education (during slavery) later when they were allowed to read and write they were given a substandard education under the Jim Crow apartheid system.

blacks in america are still kept ignorant through poverty because in america the colour of your skin dictates your economic position on the racial totem pole, as a result the majority of black americans attend sub standard schools as they can not afford to attend fee paying schools with higher standards. In nigeria many young people do not get a quality education as the nigerian govt has been cutting spending on education in nigeria consistently since 1985 under instructions from the US controlled IMF.

Fortunately my children have out grown Disney channel and are now graduates. One is mechanic, the other works for a large media house as graphic designer. I tried to instill in my children the culture of hard work, smart work, dignity in labour and ultimately contentment.

Having lived through Irangate, watergate, having studied socio-economic politics of the mid to late 20th century, I cannot begin to start an arguement with you here, other than to say fortunately we leave a free society which allows us have our views.Between you and the young Nigerian who believes in ' my time will come philosophy' or 'settle culture'. I would grudgingly chose you, even though many of your arguments are flawed, your heart is in the right place.

Perhaps when you are older (this is not meant as condescending) you will realize that there is no grand conspiracy, there is no room where 10 or 12 white people gather together to control world, and better to still you may come to realize that some of those that you now consider heroes also have their own agendas which often do not include any betterment for people like you and I.

Re: Sad Facts About Modern Family Life by faithin9ja: 1:35pm On Jul 07, 2012
cap28:

You are missing the point.

Those nigerians that you mentioned all have one thing in common - they are neo colonial agents -

what is neo colonialism?

Neocolonialism (also Neo-colonialism) is the geopolitical practice of using capitalism, business globalization, and cultural imperialism to control a country, in lieu of either direct military control or indirect political control, i.e. imperialism and hegemony. The term neo-colonialism was coined by the Ghanaian politician Kwame Nkrumah, to describe the socio-economic and political control that can be exercised economically, linguistically, and culturally, whereby promotion of the culture of the neo-colonist country, facilitates the assimilation of the colonised people, and thus opens the national economy to the multinational corporations of the neo-colonial country.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neocolonialism

Three weapons are being used by europeans against africans in order to dominate, exploit and own us:

CAPITALISM
BUSINESS GLOBALIZATION
CULTURAL IMPERIALISM

the job of those nigerians that you mentioned above is to assist in the implementation of the neo colonial project on behalf of their european and american backers.

All those european and american leaders you mentioned are AGENTS OF CAPITALISM - their job is to fool their respective electorates into thinking that they represent the interests of the people when in reality they represent the interests of - international banks, oil companies, arms dealers and the super rich oligarchs.

try reading up on some of the economic policies of Margaret Thatcher and you will find out how popular she was amongst ordinary working people in britain.

Clued up black americans have lost all confidence in Obama as they have finally discovered that he is an agent of wall street and a front man for the oligarchs who run america and europe.

@ faithin9ja: please stop being pedantic here.

There is a difference between a culture where child-brides are the norm as seen during the
time of your nanna ( grandmother) and a failing in a system where children fall out of the
safety net.... in a culture that speaks against or prohibits child-brides.

Your nanna was probably married or had the family support, the 15yr old spoken off, was NOT.

Preaching on the need for the modern youth to have an inner sense of well-being and
placing them in a position to be able compete on the global platform is not a bad thing, is it

There are different models to use. If you feel sending them to sell or "hawk" things will make them
understand the value of money, so be it.
Afterall, many innovative businesses were built or at least started in some teenager's bedroom.

Great summary. Our people haven't realised that the Media can win a war without firing a shot. We don't take media and social critics seriously for putting the New world order under a microscope.

If i am less busy and want to have a good laugh. I read comments on yahoo articles. I have oberserved a slight change in the attitude of the average Americans. They are waking up to the reality that the controlled powerful and very effective Media and big co-operations are their common enemy. I concede to your points even though I was being sarcastic.

However, I feel the OP is being too generalistic and over simplistic in laying blame and not recognizing today's youth are those developing the 'apps' we use on our new technology tomorrow.

Another factor is LAX, or LACK of, parental nurturing. These days we hav working fathers and working mothers. So, parenting is done by the househelp, often underaged girl from rural area who is herself a victim of parental abuse. What do u expect of a child practically brought up by a housegirl or series of housegirls?

undecided NA 1, 2 and 7 be the cause of the problems today. with all the chelsea's and man u fans in nigeria, one would be fooled to believe they are been paid for the tension they put themselves through, for the reality show Na big brother every one they use now even for exam hall somebody go dey use DSTV WALKA NOW...Gusssshhh

in the early 80's i had an 'Atari' in my room a funny video game and loads of comics including the famous ''nite rider'' by late 80's the Pentium one computer became popular and one funny ms dos game came with it, by early 90's the 8bit sega was already there and the tag on it was simple, just come first in ur class and it is urs, popsy doesn't renege on promises and it didn't take more than 2 terms for the warriors in the house to smash scores to land a sega.

I can still recall vividly the famous, nintendo 8bits, contra pack, mario the famous sega 16bits (the genesis), the equally popular nintendo 16bits.
I could recall when we were unable to meet the tag on the 16bits which was expensive in those days, we trek from independence layout to trans ekulu just to play the soccer that came with the famous fifa 94 where our own ''Amokachi'' and ''adepoju'' had the same skill level with the Brazilian bebeto. It was fun.
Still on sports, the famous 86,90 and 94 world cups were equally popular, the warriors in the house like my dad will call us have a bottle cork collection of every soul that featured in those world cups. Our table soccer chest was bigger than our reading table, it took passion , intelligence and extreme hardwork, energy and time to make that collection, my lucky maradonna and jurgeon klinsman became my favourite strikers on a standard pitch of table soccer.
Two of my brothers had a knee surgery back in the days no thanks to the strainous scrapping of the knee cap while playing the 'dunga' free kicks, where the ball (casette spool) must fly over 3 players to hit the post. Yea!! it was that bad and that was the fun of childhood.

Today, chelsea and Man u fans watch the games, buy jerseys and go home. During our time, we watch the world cup games, memorize every player and official with their jersey nos and play positions, go home construct every player based on ability, for example a great striker like maradonna is made with 'becks' cork (yea!! from becks beer, stronger than star or life) it is doubled and pounded together using a plug spanner or coin, the rough edges are filled then a jersey which is a floffy lucozade wrapper is worn with the inscription '10' and national flag, secured with inner cork gasket we reffer to as 'boot'.
That was the ingenuity of 8yr olds of our time. The pitch is standard, fridge carton with all lines imprinted and st Louis sugar packs as goal posts, sponge for nets etc.
The world of wrestling was not left out, gems like ''ultimate warrior'', ''Andrew the giant'', ''hulk hogan'','' mr perfect'' etc were not left out, we drew and made them with cartons and a single turn with a broom stick is all u need to get a pin fall, lol, it was fun.
I still recall with nostalgia in the early 90's the era of the c band analogue satellite dish with 'euro 10' or 'starmax'decoders, the sleepless nites with nile sat and channel 2 waiting patiently to see shwarzneeger's 'commando ',van damme's 'rocky' and roger moore's 'james bond'. It was wild, even our mates in the village do 6 hrs of farm work daily to earn their school fees.
How can i forget the tournaments and the trophies? Port harcort for instance doesn't have much football pitches except for church premises, in our own days, every street has a pitch least you can get is 'monkey post' the boys these days don't play they just watch.

Other contests like table soccer championships comprising 8 schools in a neighbor hood or the table soccer world cup, every hood is equally represented, contra and mario tournament last stage winner lol, it was very exciting the competition amongst kids were fierce.

The music world wasnt left out, an 'A' in biology was all you need to visit fela's shrine for the senior warriors, collections like the beetles and jackson five never left the shelves.

Amidst all these distractions,(the poster may chose to call it,) no warrior took any external examination twice,(jamb and gce) when the exams still have some dignity, in an era when the buhari and idiagbon boys treat exam cheats like armed robbers.

The fun was there same was the discipline and academic successes, the same way we competed with games we did with academics,

the lux fiat stone of fame, chike obi mathematics award, best graduating students award were a few academic achievements that made our parents proud.

Today, the warriors have metamorphosed into one cardiac surgeon, one professor of pharmacy and an oil and gas enterprenuer.

If you peer into our antecedents, you would conclude from the OP's ascertion that we will all be useless.

No doubt the story of our childhood was an ephemeral stage of fun not necessarily a distraction like the poster will want us to believe.

dstv and blackberry can never be blamed, some dull parents equally expect their kids to be sharp.

@ cap 28

i tell you what, America is too busy to bother their head with Nigerian youths whose parents by default have "zombied" their well being through poor parenting.

who are these kids that the poster is blaming DSTV and black berry for their woes?

the same kids that sit tight in air conditioned cars on traffic every morning looking obese and over fed, that cannot even take proper 3 steps without staggering? armed to the teeth with different sizes of food flask even as teenagers? how do you expect such pet of a child to be useful?
this is a child that most likely has failed the previous term and the parents still treat him like a king, why wont he fail again?

during our time, you will only have the privilege of going to school in popsy's Peugeot 504 or mumsy's Volkswagen beetle if you make an average score of 70% and above. anything short of that is trekking for the rest of the term.

i can still recall vividly when i registered for jss1 at 11yrs, i was given directions to travel to another state to register my self in my new school, i thought i was alone in the world not until i got there to see 3 of my primary school mates who equally came on their own, a hand full of other boys who came with parents, the school being so kind registered us first before the ones that came with their parents so we wont stay long in the queue on that sunny afternoon, that was our own days which i am very proud of, liken it to what is obtainable today.

both parents will clear their schedule because a son of 22 years is sitting for Jamb exam, after the stup!d "write well we are with you" hugs outside, the "pet" of a son is escorted into the exam hall armed with two different status mercenaries. on the right flank is a university undergraduate while on the left is a polytechnic undergraduate after spending millions giving him different models of private tutors and cash to "sort" his way out in case of emergency. should we not be ashamed? how can such a son make it in life? how do you expect him to be useful?

during our days we are told that matriculation was a step to the big world, i can recall when i gained admission into the university, my popsy bought me a gold Rolex wristwatch (still in my collection till date) and that was all, when i mentioned matriculation, he said it is easier to enter but graduating with a good grade is only worth celebrating, that he owes me convocation not matric. i accepted my faith and moved on.

conversely, our present day parents are a total waste, a son that could not pass jamb on 5 sittings is escorted with a cultural dance, orchestra, fan fare to a private university where the parents spend almost a million bucks to buy admissions for them. in a very colorful ceremony, the waste of a son is deposited with his block head in the arms of the school authorities, tell me, why wont such a child join cult? knowing fully well he has the support of his parents if anything goes wrong.

today, parents encourage their kids to give birth at home with impunity while still under their control, in our days, an attempt to sleep with a man under your father's roof is outright disowning let alone coming back with fruit of recklessness.

parents no longer frown at having sons and daughters that were rusticated for improper conduct from the school, they go home and tell their wards that they had a problem and that is the end, parents will immediately mobilize resources to start looking for another admission.

A 25 year old son (an over grown baby elephant) comes home to demand 400k for books and the modern parents will oblige without even asking questions or even making an attempt to verify the veracity of the stories sold to them,5 yrs on he comes back as a drug addict or armed robber. why wont he have a gun? when your cavalier as a parent has already paid for one. then you take him for "deliverance" in a celestial church.

during our time, popsy will write to the school with his official letter head demanding for your previous year result, required text books and school fees for the next academic year from the school admin, paste it on his reading table, for every demand you make at home, there will be a cross reference of what he has with the story you are selling, God help you if there is any discrepancy.the list is endless

it is a shame!! the modern parents have failed woefully. it is the senseless decisions taken by the modern parents that marooned the future of their kids, DSTV can never take the fall.

8 EVER BUSY PARENTS, Parents are always in search for money, business and jobs, they live home 5am and come back 10pm leaving their children to the care of house helps and teachers in private schools. THEY have forgotten that out of the 24 hours in a day their children will only spend 8am-2pm(6 hrs) in school and in hands of the teachers the remaining 18hrs is spent in the home(wether sleep or not).these same ever busy parents can not look into the books of their teenagers, they don't monitor waht the teenagers watch nor who they associate with.

9 WEAK GOVT POLICIES:The people in Govt see all these vanities on tele and radio and they will not nip them in the bud, because they are naïve and corrupt and so the rot continues

Source
The main reason for failed family life is with the parents. All these reason adduced above can not cause problems if parents are responsible and serve as good role models for their children. Technology like phone, tv and the rest have their advantages which have outweigh the disadvantage. Parents need only to ensure their children are brought up to appreciate the positive side of it and not ruin their lives with the technologies.

The likes of Ibori and other criminals would never get anywhere near the corridors of power if the likes of IBB and Obasanjo had not handed nigeria on a platter of gold to the IMF and the world bank.

Buhari made it clear to the IMF that he was not willing to go down the route of SAP (Structural adjustment policies aka debt slavery) and he was immediately toppled by the CIA.

Obasanjo and Babangida's treachery led to the economic enslavement of nigeria, without the aforementioned criminals there would be no Ibori.

@ jp phillips.. kudos to your parents "and supporting staff" on a job well done.

I believe the intention of the original post was not to simply identify these distractions
but to also place emphasis on the lack of balance being observed.

Different reasons have been postulated here: from lack of good upbringing, poor
parental supervision and decaying societal moral fibre.

You attested to the fact that these games or privileges were given as
presents not as a way of life as seen in some parts,....for academic
brilliance.
So you all, had to apply yourselves.

But that attitude is slowly being eroded by a " work little or not at all but achieve great things" mentality.

As identified in an earlier post, the hard skills are being thrown out with the bath water
whilst the soft skills are over-celebrated.

I read some comments made by the youth with awe.....
Why work hard if I can get a rich man to pay for my needs and possibly my entire village!! at that.

Focus is on the superficial, not on developing the innerman..

Getting latest designer clothes and Brazilian hair ... not acquiring life skills to improve employment or entrepreneurial opportunities!!

Of course, I concur not everyone falls into this remit.

Do you know that Psychological Operations or Psy Ops is a very important technique used by US and british intelligence services to defeat its enemies. The western media uses Psy Ops on its citizens as well as on target nations.

for those who dont know here is the definition:

Psychological warfare (PSYWAR), or the basic aspects of modern psychological operations (PSYOP), have been known by many other names or terms, including Psy Ops, Political Warfare, “Hearts and Minds”, and Propaganda.[1] Various techniques are used, by any set of groups, and aimed to influence a target audience's value systems, belief systems, emotions, motives, reasoning, or behavior. It is used to induce confessions or reinforce attitudes and behaviors favorable to the originator's objectives, and are sometimes combined with black operations or false flag tactics. Target audiences can be governments, organizations, groups, and individuals.

The U.S. Department of Defense defines psychological warfare as:
"The planned use of propaganda and other psychological actions having the primary purpose of influencing the opinions, emotions, attitudes, and behavior of hostile foreign groups in such a way as to support the achievement of national objectives."[3]
This definition indicates that a critical element of the U.S. psychological operations capabilities includes propaganda and by extension counterpropaganda. Joint Publication 3-53 establishes specific policy to use public affairs mediums to counterpropaganda from foreign origins. [4]
During World War II the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff defined psychological warfare more broadly stating "Psychological warfare employs any weapon to influence the mind of the enemy. The weapons are psychological only in the effect they produce and not because of the weapons themselves."[

Same story all over our continent now... Read the angle on the same story from Tanzania...

While many nations are progressing towards positive economic and social changes, Tanzania is scampering towards self destruction. The stealthy negative drift of our country towards social-economic catastrophe, is rather worrying due to the very fact that, Tanzania’s demise is being orchestrated by Tanzanians themselves who are rapidly replacing the culture of hard work with the get rich quick mythology, accompanied by endless lavish and unsustainable lifestyles, on top of irresponsibility on the part of country’s leadership

Many people within our nation have been caught up in the middle of unorthodox lifestyles, which are impelling millions of us, to focus more on how to strike quick monetary deals, than being creative enough to think of sustainable life, many years after today. It is sad that many of our people have been swamped in this wave of unrealistic lifestyles, which has replaced discipline and hard work, with ”starehe”; and this is worrying.

While transiting from Mara region through Kenya, back to Dar es Salaam, I had a few minutes to process necessary paperwork needed to cross (drive through) the border. In the process, I was compelled to make a few phone calls, and had no sufficient credit, and had to purchase additional credit from a nearby shop cum-bar, and restaurant prior to my departure, and my experience was rather pessimistic, and sad indeed to say the least; all I saw was a silent death of our nation
At nine in the morning, men, women and teenagers, strong enough to work were in, for a full blown party. In a simple language, the bar was full of people, and tables within, were full beer bottles. It was party time; staggering men and women who were evidently unable to hold their balance took to the floor, forcibly trying to keep up with the rhythm of the Congolese music “Bolingo”, which controlled the tempo.

A day after arriving in Dar es Salaam, I had another trip to Morogoro with a group of volunteers. I was supposed to be picked up at a very popular spot, and on that day if I was to be a customer at this city spot, I would have been the first customer. A few minutes before ten in the morning, a small car pulled up with two young men, who were in their either mid twenties or early thirties. Less than ten minutes later, another vehicle pulled up with two more young men along with a lady, and both sat on the same table. They were well kept, and neatly dressed, with some of them holding expensive mobile phones.

No sooner did they take their seats than they were served with beer, and within no time, scary and heated soccer talk- fanaticism- ensued as some obviously were for the Manchester United, while the rest were Liverpool diehard fans. I was surprised when one of them identified me by name, even though we had never met before, and offered me a drink. I, however, Politely declined the offer, not only because I don’t use alcohol, but mainly because of the time –it was too early- These were young people, strong enough to be doing all kind of work to push the economic wheel, yet were emptying beer bottles, and ready to fight for European football teams. I was embarrassed and astonished

I was given an example of a young man in the neighborhood that is living large; driving some of the latest automobiles, yet has never owned a business or received employment check. I was simply told that, “Hayo ndo maisha ya dili mjini”. Coming from an environment in which seventeen hours of work a day is a routine, I could not believe or understand this culture in which young and able persons prefer idleness, and partying than working, and still drive Range Rovers. I decided to carry research to be certain before concluding otherwise. I visited the so called elite hanging spots, and my findings were not different from my previous ones.

High RANKING government officials goes to bars days in a row; I found many STK vehicles, Ministers Land Cruisers with their official’s numbers on them. Three days in a row, and simply said, no wonder we are so poor, A culture of shame. I wonder what in the world they tell their boss, Mr. President when they fail to deliver, more so their electorate when their many promises turns to be hot air? Don’t misquote me, nothing wrong with partying, however, should be done with moderation

Even though I left Tanzania in my late teenage years, my many years in foreign land never exposed me to such a culture, I have never witnessed anything of that nature, and can never jump into making conclusions, I am however, letting you the reader decide how a nation such a Tanzania can prosper, when her people are living to party instead of living to work. When her leaders and high ranking officials’ penchant for their own ambitions and interests supersede the country’s well being?

I was made to understand that the culture of deals is deeply entrenched not only in the streets, but also in major public organs, in which a handful or a few persons are truly committed to their work. Many have nothing more than brainstorming how to push bogus deals -payment claims- or simply get their customary 10% than defend the country. These poseur and obsequious officials are nothing but miniatures of EPA criminals, dragging the country into her death bed.
Tanzanians are pushing their country into total destruction.
Professionals entrusted with the power to protect the public, are the very people dishing licenses to businessmen and women setting up bars and nightclubs in residential areas without observing the guidelines and city buildings codes. A hall in Segerea CCM- Chama- is a typical example of the bars that plays music almost 14 hours a day in the middle of a residential area. Not only are they causing noise pollution, they are making it extremely tough for school children spending many hours scrambling to get home, particularly difficult to study, and the government is simply to powerless to act.

I cannot be persuaded to believe that, city of Dar es Salaam has no ordinances that prohibit times in which alcohol can be sold to the public. Neither can I believe that, there are no regulatory authorities that can enforce the ordinances that prohibit sound disturbance in residential areas. These are problems in poor areas of the city and not the likes of Masaki and Hoyster-bay where the elite bask.

In a country where a minister, can attend a bar, days in a row, go to sleep, get up the next day attend state duties with hangover. Believe me or not, such a man has nothing new for the country. All he has is time to sign anything that comes in front of him without looking in details the contents of that document, and that is why our country is getting poor and poorer, because there is no time to scrutinize shady contracts.
There is never going to be any economic progress as long as our top bottom leadership approach to finding our social, political and economic solutions lies in the hands of the people with more time to party and attend Ms. Tanzania pageantry than following up with the law enforcers on who kill Albinos. A culture of shame!

I wonder how logical and responsible people can describe a situation within a nation, in which young people are driving around without working. Top leaders are partying every day, young kids cannot study because they are exposed to bars with dirty language and uncontrolled music around the clock? And Laws established to protect the people are simply irrelevant to the poor majority, but too strong to protect the mighty and the powerful;

I see a negative progression, stealthy and fast demise of a nation. Our nation’s economic future outlook is grim, social and moral pillars are in shambles. Tanzanians who love their country must be realistic with these shameful social vices.
We must work swiftly, rapidly, and collectively to condemn these acts of social perversion in order to resuscitate life into our nation from her slow and stealthy economic, social and moral death. If we can’t be sacrificial and courageous enough to stand up to these vices tearing our country apart, by condemning them; instead spending our time discussing people’s personalities, and fighting individual’s progress, then we are in for a long night of affliction

justirich: Dear Nigerians, the reasons for mass failure of our teenagers in public exams are not far fetched.

1 FACEBOOK,YAHOO,TWITTER,MYSPACE and generally browsing on the internet instead of reading their books

2 ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE and EUROPEAN FOOTBALL LEAGUES, it is easy for an average nigerian teenager to know the tha names of all chelsea players but same youths cannot tell you the square root 25 in mathematic. Worse still is that these days instead of seeing inscriptions like UNIVERISTY or SCHOLARS on the exercise books, what you see are pictures of paloma,Drogba,Beyonce,Omotola etc

3 DSTV,Home video and african movie magic, watching television and films endlessly.European champions league,English premiership,Barca,Blues,Chelsea,MANU etc

4 GSM and BLACKBERRY, the average nigerian teenager uses the latest and expensive gsm phones just to show off that they belong, when they are actually nothing.

5 GSM TEXT LANGUAGE, I will not be suprised to see students write words like your(for YOUR), 2moro( For tomorrow) in their EXAM sheets

6 QUEST FOR CHEAP FAME AND WEALTH, The goverment, electronic media(tv and radio) and companies have not been helpful at all.The average nigerian youth especially the girls want to BE silver Birds most beautiful Girl and get cheap money and fame(Nobody has remembered all the previous miss world, but we still remember MOTHER THERESA),they want to win IDOLS WEST AFRICA, they want to be in NOLLYWOOD, they want to be TWO-FACE,they want to win maltina street dance ,they want to win starquest and GULDER ULTIMATE SEARCH

Warning is that wealth gotten by vanity shall DIMINISH.

7 The new craze of TALENT SHOWS: Suddenly The only talents our youths now have are music, dancing, acting and stand up comedies, they no longer have talents for maths, physics and entrepreneurism.
Check out the list:MTN PROJECT FAME,BIG BROTHER,STARQUEST,MALTINA DANCE HALL,AMBO,GUILDER,IDOLS WEST AFRICA,PEAK TALENT HUNT ETC…What a bad distraction

I dont totally agree with your points, advancement in technology is meant to improve the way we do things. The advanced countries have been able to standardise the way they do things with these technologies e.g the way they asses talents and brilliance and they've also created a balance between work and leisure. Our own problem is that we do not know where we are going as a nation (who cares) and so ther is no tangible plan on how to get to a no-destination.

We use abbreviation like etc, eg, Mr, Mrs and all this are not wrong because they were written by some white folks and taught in school, but others like lol, HBd, brb and so on are wrong because they are from teenagers... Smh, we really need to change this our hypocritical attitude.

Do I go on?

Shay na video game, blackberry, nollywood spoil these ones?

Am sure Jimmy Carter, Obama, Gerald Ford, George Bush, Tony Blair, Maggie Thatcher, even Bill Clinton (of single parent) had more affluent upbringing than those Nigerians listed above. but who turned out to be the better set of leaders?

My people bring up your children right, stop complaining about modernization and learn to move with the times. (if you like send your children to hawk tomatoes in the market, in order to make them understand life)

You have said it all. Nigerians will blame anybody but themselves for their misfortunes. 52 years after independence and some people are blaming the west. Of all the things the poster said, it all boils down to bad parenting. And why do we have bad parents, its because OUR VALUES SYSTEMS HAVE CHABGED!. Parents no longer have time for their kids, all they have time for is money, money and more money!

Who buys these gadgets for the kids? Isnt it the parents? Most times just for the fun of showing off to people that I can afford to buy these gardgets without even thinking of the potential dangers to the kids. Dont blame the kids, blame the generation of bad parents that refuse to imbibe the right values in these kids. What you have highlighted is just a reflection of our wider society

Gerrard59: Another thing sef. If the past generation were so good, well nutured, disciplined e.t.c how come Nigeria is in such a big mess? Na youths cause am? The tribalism on nl,na youth cause am? Corruption nko? The past generation are Phd holders in hypocrisy. White man dey e own,cap28 blame hm woes on am. Is it clinton that instigate the tribal fights on nl? Abi,blair na bluetooth? Or sarkozy na chino?

lol, not the youths' fault anyway...we all know that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Those guys in the realm of power have lost it... cheesy
But, then, we can not deny the fact that the value placed on education those days was appreciable, and it worked for them, and still speaks for them!

The good thing in there that we fail to realise is that, aside the good education that they had in the past, the 'distractions -hi life, pop music etc' they equally had a strong family tie, good parenting foundation, which was of great help...hence, the usual adage in yoruba ...'ran ti omo eni ti iwo nse'. Remember the child of whom you are... The problem we are facing now is that our education system is porous, lots of distracting activities and weak parenting foundation! Now, do we blame the youth for all of these? wink No. Maybe if we have more committed, functional parents, things might work out fine. Yes, it would. The home training part is so vital, and alot of our young people don't have it...

'The tribalism and sectionalism you witness on Nairaland is a common trait of the unregenerated man who sees himself better and of greater importances to others... even those white people too, got cabals, and allow some forms of rascism. Maybe, it's a trait that education cannot help out, but in knowing the fact that we are equal in His sight.

The OP highlighted some points that really touch a nerve. I for one can't stand this so called text english that makes intelligent beings communicate as though they are imbeciles. What is GGMUB or LLNP in english language? Whilst their usage can be condoned in social media, the users have to understand that you cannot use such language in everyday life and expect to get very far. Its not the teenagers fault that this is the parlance of their generation, but I will blame ANY teenager and indeed adult, who attempts to use this language in academic or professional circles. The usage is not the culprit now, just the ability to use proper judgement to ascertain when to use it and when to refrain. In this, the coming generations are lacking, and its not just Nigerians as well. Our role is simple; teach and coach our wards to keep it simple and leave it original as the setting dictates. I fear we shall have a generation of schooled illiterates on our hands pretty soon; people with degrees and with very little by way of knowledge.

Rubbish!!!!

every generation believes the younger generation is in a worse position.
Just because you grew up without a television that means our children should not have a television?
The world is evolving, our parents, (I am almost 50) decried the fact we listened to hip hop & disco music. They didn't know shalamar, kool and the gang or public enemy, now my children listen to D'banj & P square. We watched videos, my children play video games, we read comics, now children are their own heroes in the comics (ie video games).

We all pretend to come from nuclear family - mummy, daddy and 3 to 5 children. Past generations made us believe that was the correct way, however in real life we all have half brothers and sisters. My mama pickin, my papa pickin, my papa wife, etc

When I was growing up there were 13 universities in Nigeria, now there are over 50 (albeit some of dubious quality)

The youth of today are the ones who are bring new technology and developments to society.

In my grandparents generation, the few who were encouraged to go to school, were encouraged to be teachers, court clerks and administrators. The next generation wanted their children to be doctors, lawyers or engineers, in the modern world we expect our children IT gurus, entertainers, top sports people, even a top newscaster.

So stop knocking the youth, the world is changing
