The Most Commercialized/industrialized Non-capital Cities In Nigeria by niceone3(m): 6:41pm On Jul 11, 2012 |
In Nigeria states, much of the industries and commercial activities are mainly concentrated in the state capitals leaving other parts of the state underdeveloped and deserted. This is in contrast with what we see in most developed countries. for instance, in United States a good number of developed cities are non_state capital eg Lose Angelese, Chicago, las Vegas, Hollywood, Detriots,Houstin, Miami, San Fransisco/san jose Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Orleans etc. most of these cities are usually the largest and the most industrialized in their respective states. for instance San Fransisco/san jose area are part of the great silicon valley where we have the highest concentration of hi Tech in the World. the Google, the Facebook, the Yahoo, Oracle Corp., Intel, Apple etc are all headquartered there. Same can be said of Detriot which is revered by some as the world's traditional automotive center. It has almost become synonymous to 'the American automobile industry' It is Home to American 'Big Three' automobile companies, General motors, Ford, and Chrysler. Also, Las vagas a cruising destination, pride it self as The Entertainment Capital of the World and the list goes on. when will Nigeria achieve a tenth of this feat? for the fact that Nigeria economy is government driven, state governors should try as much as possible to site some of there major project outside the state capital for even development and also encourage investor to follow suit by a way of granting them all the necessary support they would need. relocating of some state capital will also be a good idea instead of demolishing proprieties in the guise of defacing and modernizing already congested capital cities thereby creating more hardship, slums, traffic jams etc. if this relocation is done the new state capital can be gradually developed with all modern infrastructural facilities in place--After all some of those great American cities where once state capitals. back to the topic, there are very few Commercialised/industrialized cities outside the state capitals in Nigeria. as per Nigeria standard, I would say the following five cities tops: Aba Onitcha Warri Nnewi Zaria 3 Likes |

sapele is cool, i have been their before. what am really advocating for Nigeria cities is to initiate growth based on where they have comparative advantage and specialty. I would love to see cities assuming the status of silicon valley of Nig., the Detriot of Nig., Las vagas of Nig. etc 1 Like |

nice.one: I've been consumed with the exact same thought, bruv. Particularly high tech areas like Silicon valley and our very own homegrown, community driven low tech (but everyday lif enriching) technology hobs. Nigeria can change drammatically, if only we would embrace organisation. |

jbaur24: The cup goes to the following three cities: Are there industries in Lagos Island and VI? Are banks also industries? Okay may be service industries. Okay! I see also the word commercialized, which then factors in VI and Lagos Island. My bad But I had reckoned the OP meant manufacturing industries. |
Re: The Most Commercialized/industrialized Non-capital Cities In Nigeria by FSU: 10:54pm On Jul 11, 2012 |
emiye: Agbara in Ogun state. Agbara does not have more industries in general than Nnewi, but it has more multi-national bluechips for sure. |
Re: The Most Commercialized/industrialized Non-capital Cities In Nigeria by emiye(m): 11:00pm On Jul 11, 2012 |
FSU:I am looking at Quality (strength) not quantity of industries. A blue chip manufacturing coy in Agbara might have the strength of some twenty others somewhere else. The strength of commerce is what i based my conclusion on. |

emiye: I am looking at Quality (strength) not quantity of industries. A blue chip manufacturing coy in Agbara might have the strength of some twenty others somewhere else. Yet there is far more commerce taking place at Nnewi than Agbara. The blue chips at Agbara belong to Oyibo and few Nigerians who take the money and put in banks overseas. The industries and hence the money at Nnewi is local. That is why Agbara remains a rusty town despite all the blue chips there. 2 Likes |

Re: The Most Commercialized/industrialized Non-capital Cities In Nigeria by PHIPEX(m): 7:35pm On Jul 14, 2012 |
Agbara is not a city but an industrial estate with several Multinationals though. Take away the industrial estate which is less than 500 metres from Lagos and what remains is not equal to a town. Sango/Ota is more of a city than Agbara but not among top 10. |

If you guys noticed, the OP said "Most Commercialized/ Industralized", so i don't know why some people are naming Agbara, Ota and Sapele. These towns may be industralized but not commercial. It's cities like Aba, Onitsha and Warri that fit this description. 2 Likes |
