The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has reacted to the furore generated by the appointment of Chairman and members of the new governing board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) headed by His Excellency, Dr. Pius Odubu.


The party in a statement released and signed by its Director of Communications Mr. Nick Ovuakporie, cautioned those behind the media outrage against heating up the polity.


The party said the appointment was the prerogative of the President and Commander in Chief which cannot be delegated neither abrogated.


The party stress that the appointment of Dr. Pius Odubu as Chairman of the NDDC board was done in good faith and in tandem with extant practice.


The party reminded those behind the agitations of the application of the doctrine of necessity as no one envisaged a situation whereby a single State will produce both the Chairman and Managing Director of the Commission which may have prompted the wisdom of the President to move the appointment of the board Chairman, to the next State with letter "E" (Edo State), so as to revert to Letter ""(Delta State) at the completion of the term of office of the new board in order to reflect equity, fairness and balance.


The party clarified further, that this present scenario whereby the Chairman and Managing Director of the NDDC coincidentally falls within one State to produce, has never happened since the establishment of the Commission, hence this development calls for the application of the doctrine of necessity which the President employed in this instance.


The party went on to say that Dr. Pius Odubu was qualified to lead and reposition the NDDC to effectively deliver in it's core mandate as an interventionist agency, established to revamp the infrastructural deficit of the Niger Delta region.


The party calls for calm and appealed to those who have filed litigations against the appointment of the Commission's Chairman to withdraw same and support the board for the good of Delta State and the overall development of the region, it added.

The Minister of Transportation Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said he knew he would return as Minister following a hint from President Buhari.

The Senator representing Rivers South East, Magnus Abe has been accused of working in concert with Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the election of former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku as President during the presidential poll.

Director General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chidi Lloyd made this accusation today in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen.

Lloyd was reacting to Abe’s allegation that the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi through Lloyd ridiculed President Muhammadu Buhari during a television programme on Channels TV.

In his words: “It is on record that when we were working round the clock to ensure we re-elected President Buhari, Magnus Abe addressed a team of 23 Coordinators across the 23 LGAs in his camp to go to their LGAs and instruct their supporters to vote for Atiku instead President Buhari and they did.”

“It is an incontrovertible fact that Magnus Abe was collecting huge sums of money and a land cruiser jeep, including payment of legal fees from Governor Wike to pull the rug off the feet of the APC, it is even more annoying that Magnus Abe did everything under the sun to stop President Buhari from being re-elected”.

The former Majority Leader of the Rivers State accused Abe of collaborating with Wike to throw spanner in the works for the state chapter of the APC.

In 1989, he was appointed as Chief Magistrate of the High Court of Federal Capital Territory, a position he held till 1991 when he became a Judge at the Bauchi State Sharia Court of Appeal. He served in that capacity for two years before he was appointed to the bench o the Nigerian courts of appeal as Justice in 1993.

He held this position for thirteen years before he was appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2006 but was sworn in on January 7, 2007.

Qualifications

Nationality:

• Applicants must be a Nigerian citizen by birth.
Height:

• Applicants must not be less than 1.66m tall for male and not less than 1.63m tall for female.

Non Tradesmen/Women:

• Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 22 years by 31 December 2019.
• Applicants must possess a minimum of 5 credits including Mathematics and English in SSCE/NECO/GCE/NABTEB.

Tradesmen/Women:

• Applicants applying as tradesmen and women must be between 18 and 25 years of age except for those applying as assistant chaplains/assistance imams and drivers who must be between 18 and 28 years.
• Applicants must possess a minimum of 2 passes with a credit in English in SSCE/NECO/GCE/NABTEB and must possess at least a lower credit in ND/NCE or any relevant trade certificates from reputable and approved government institutions/organisations.
• Drivers must posses a minimum of 2 passes with a credit in English and trade test certificate.
• Applicants applying as sportsmen/women are to present evidence of their professional experience which will include certificates and medals.

In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, he stated that, Magnus Abe may face expulsion following the unresolved internal dispute in the Rivers APC.

Mallam Lanre said; “The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has frowned on the actions of some Party members who have resorted to litigation as a way of addressing their perceived grievances and disputation without exhausting the party’s dispute resolution mechanism.

This growing trend is viewed by the party as a manifest indiscipline. The actions, it should be noted, is considered as anti-party as it goes against our Party’s constitution.

For emphasis, according to Article 20, Subsection 10 of our Party’s Constitution, offences against the Party shall include the following: “Filing an action in a Court of Law against the Party or any of its Officers on any matters relating to the discharge of the duties of the Party without first exhausting all avenues for redress provided for in this Constitution.”

The spokes person of APC said the party will reenforce the party’s disciplinary measures to discipline those causing mayhem in the party if they fail to withdraw all court cases filed against the party.....

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has predicted that whoever emerges as the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would eventually become the next president of the country.

In his remarks at the ongoing National Convention of the PDP in Port Harcourt, Jonathan said having worked with all the 12 aspirants, he believed they were all eminently qualified to be president of the country.

His words: “I have worked with all the aspirants at one time or the other. They are all eminently qualified to be president of this country. I am also certain that among them is the next president of this Federal Republic.”

He however said the overriding criteria should be the ability to unite the country because of the sorry state of the nation.

The former president expressed satisfaction that the glorious days of the party was reborn.

“One thing that makes me happy is that today I can see the good old days of PDP. Today, we have the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and many more governors. This shows that the PDP is coming back.

“I am also happy with the commitment of all the aspirants to support whoever emerges candidate and work with him. This is healthy for our party and for our country,” he said.

TEXT OF ACCEPTANCE SPEECH BY TONYE PATRICK COLE FOLLOWING VICTORY AT APC’S GOVERNORSHIP PRIMARIES FOR RIVERS STATE

My Leaders in the APC starting from the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Mohammadu Buhari GCON, the National Chairman of APC Comrade ADAMS Oshimole and the National Exco, the State Chaiman Ojukaiye Flag-Amachree and the State Exco, the leaders of APC far and near, present or not, my People, my State permit me to stand on all existing Protocal.

Let me begin by giving gratitude to whom all thanks must go. To my Lord and Master, My Father, the Almighty God, without whom I most certainly would not even be in this process and who is most assuredly responsible for my emergence as the gubernatorial flag bearer for APC today.

This is an incredibly special day for the people of Rivers State. Indeed it is a day that signals that the people of Rivers State have determined to chart a different course in the way the want to be governed, in the type of candidate they want governing them and in the manner with which partisan politics is viewed and represented from henceforth.

The journey thus far has been an extremely humbling one where I have come to increasingly appreciate on a daily basis the incredibly important roles the men and women at every level of the political hierarchy have to play in determining the political future of a people, a state and indeed a nation.

The weight of responsibility on the shoulders of the delegates who voted today is enormous and by voting overwhelmingly in my favour, they have transferred that burden on to my shoulders to lead this great party in this incredibly blessed state.

If these delegates get this process wrong and an unworthy candidate emerges, the resultant hardship on the people of Rivers State is beyond what words can describe. as we have witnessed and lived through in recent times.

It is therefore not a decision or a call I take lightly at all but one that requires continuous deep reflection of what direction the people of Rivers State wish to be led and who will lead them. I am fully convinced that the choice the delegates have made by granting me their mandate today is a direct reflection of the deep yearning of the greater percentage of the Rivers people for a positive and life impacting change.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

There are certain things that have become synonymous with Rivers State that is not a true reflection of who I know we are as a people nor does it do justice to our rich heritage and proud culture.

1. One of such things is a pervasive narrative of electoral violence that spills over to well after elections are over. This narrative and its negative cause effect has been a major disincentive to investment in the state, an increased level of unemployment and a crushing level of poverty. This must end.

We exhibited today by conducting a safe, secure, free and fair primaries that violence and the threat thereof is something we can and will certainly eradicate. We will strive to ensure that every eligible voter in this state, indigene and non-indigene alike must not only be able to exercise their fundamental human right to vote, they must do so in a safe environment and must know that their votes WILL count.

Of a priority therefore is to return a sense of peace and security to the people of this great state.

2. This can however not be achieved unless genuine reconciliation and a sense of purpose is given to many who have been deeply aggrieved by bitter politics, deadly rivalries, winner takes all mentality and a me first psychology to life.

We will embark on a reconciliation exercise with members of our APC family who in the process of electing flag bearers may have lost out and feel aggrieved by the process. They will be made welcome in the task or rebuilding Rivers State for the better.

We will look to embrace those from other political leanings that are willing to put the rebuilding of the pride and honour of the State before their personal and political ambitions and welcome them into the family.

3. The pattern of the delegates votes today reflects a great desire for a more inclusive bond and infrastructural interconnectivity between the peoples of the riverine communities and those of the upland communities which will not be ignored.

The damage to the ecology and economies of the riverine communities of this State, the pollution and loss of livelihood have to be addressed.

4. Unity of our people and purpose is a cardinal anchor with which we will be canvassing for the support of the people to usher in a new administration come 2019.

In our government, everyone matters and we will do our best to bring in key segments of our people that we know are a critical factor in building great economies of the world. Women, People With Disabilities, the Aged, Teenagers and Students must have an increasingly visible role in how the future of the state is determined and their contribution to the GDP will not be ignored.

It is not lost on me that the people, starting from the delegates who voted today, are the ones who have granted me their mandate and as a result this will be a people’s government, focused on the people for the benefit of the people, by the people.

Let me close by extending my deepest and most sincere gratitude to the men and women of the armed forces who put their lives daily on the line to ensure that we sleep well at night. The Police, the Civil Defense, the DSS, the Army, the Navy, the Air Force all of whom are deeply involved in the State. Your efforts are not ignored at all and deeply appreciated.

I thank INEC and Col Lawal Jafaru Isa and his team for exhibiting with each election cycle that goes by, a clear mandate to conducting credible elections in Nigeria that is increasingly bringing greater recognition to Nigeria as a thriving democracy.

The success in Edo, Anambra, ONDO, Ekiti and Osun since 2015 where votes actually counted is increasingly giving the electorate confidence that those they truly want to govern them will be voted in and any one not living up to the mandate given them will equally be voted out.

Dr. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment has revealed that the implementation of the new minimum wage by the end of Aug is not longer feasible due to difficulties on reaching a specific figure.

He said: “I am the deputy chairman of the committee and I drive it. We have a timetable and we are expected to finish everything about it by the end of this August, but it is not attainable anymore because even in the committee, we have not agreed on any figure.

“We could not agree on a figure because of two reasons. One is that the state governors have not come up with a figure and the state governors are a critical constituent of this discussion. They have six governors in the committee, one from each geo-political zone.

A member of the All Progressives Congress(APC) Rivers State, Glory Ichenwo, DG, Initiative For Change Development (ICD) yesterday, was allegedly attacked by PDP hoodlums at his residence in Rumuekpirikon, the native community of the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, Port Harcourt.

It was reported that the attack is linked to the defeat of PDP in the concluded bye-election in Portharcourt as the angry hoodlums used Ichenwo to set example for all. It was also reported that the PDP hoodlums after extorting the belongings of Mr. Ichenwo, they parted chanting “Only you can not do it alone in this community. This is PDP zone”

Glory Ichenwo is currently hospitalized in Port Harcourt.

Governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, has declared that the time has come for members of the party to sink their differences and allow peace to reign in the party’s fold in the State.

Abe, who made the declaration while speaking at the commissioning of the new APC secretariat in Port Harcourt, said the proper thing for members of the party to do is to look for ways of achieving peace within the party in the state.

“Let me say that time has come for us to make peace in the party. People should not see peace as defeat. Peace is what we need to move the party forward”.

“Let me also say that sending people to come and shoot members of our party will not bring peace. Sending people to begin a campaign of calumny against members of the party will not bring peace”.

“The proper thing for us to do is to begin to look for things that will bring us together. I want to say without fear or favour, we need a united APC in Rivers State. That is why this secretariat is open to every member of the party, who is desirous of victory for the party”.

“Nobody wants the present contraption, called a government to continue in our state. We want a change; we want true change and true progress”.

“We want true prosperity. We can achieve that in an atmosphere of mutual respect not just for each other, but even for the opposition”.

“We can achieve that in an atmosphere of peace that respects the rights of other people and be ready to accommodate the voices of dissent,” the senator said.

Abe, who is the Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, said the new secretariat is open to all members of the APC in the state irrespective of affiliation.

“I thank all members of our great party, the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, particularly members of the State Executive Committee of our party, who had stood resolutely in ensuring that we gather here today”.

“It is important that we remember that this executive of our party is the only executive of this party that was put together by all groups in the party. There is no group that did not participate in putting this executive together”.

“The executive is therefore open to everybody in the party. This is the executive that was in place when the court gave the order that the party should return to status quo. It voided the congresses at that time”.

“Let me say that, therefore, in view of the existing legal situation in the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, this is the only executive that has no legal impediment. It is therefore open to all members of this party and can serve every interest”.

“I want to associate myself with them. I can say that I support them and I stand with them because this is the only executive that is open to everybody”.

“This is the only secretariat where you do not have to preach any message of hate against any individual before you can enter”.

“As long as you believe in APC, as long as you believe in Buhari and you know that Oshiomhole is our chairman, this secretariat is your own”.

“You do not have to like Senator Abe before you can come here; you do not have to hate our leader, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi before you can come here. You do not have to hate anybody before you can come here. As far as you are a member of APC, you are welcome” he noted.

Earlier in his welcome address, Acting Chairman of APC in the State, Prince Peter Odike, urged all members of the party in the state to sink their differences and join hands to move the party forward.

Odike, who was represented by the Party’s Legal Adviser, Chieme Chienweikpe, said unfortunate events in the last few months forced the party to relocate.

He said: “You are very much aware of the unfortunate events in the last two months which necessitated the relocation of the secretariat from Old GRA to where we are today”.

“As we prepare to take off on this pedestal, I plead with us to sink our individual differences that tried to polarize our party in the past months,” Odike said.

The Lagos state government has disbursed over #140m insurance death benefits through the State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB to 40 relations of its academic and non academic staffs who passed on between October, 2016 and October, 2017.

Dr. Ganiyu Sopeyin, the Executive Chairman of LASUBEB while presenting the cheque to the deceased families at the Boards office stated that the State government has emerged the best in the country for been proactive, hence setting the pace for other states to follow.

He said; “While some states are struggling to pay salaries, the Lagos State Government has plans also for its staff who died while in service, thereby, making the state number one in Nigeria. May our prayers ease you through this moment. Words may not suffice to express the heartfelt sorrow that we feel for the passing of your loved ones, the gesture we have shown you today, is an indication that this government cares.”

He urged the beneficiaries to use the money judiciously, stressing that the deceased would be glad if the proceeds are channelled to profitable ventures for the service of humanity.

Sopeyin reiterated that the state government’s effort towards uplifting the standard of basic education, adding that the state had established six additional primary schools, recruited more teachers, provided additional training for its teachers, provisional of infrastructure among others.

He also urged both the teaching and non teaching staff in the state basic education system to reciprocate government kind gesture by always doing their best at all times.
