Car Talk / How To Get The Best Auto Parts For Your Car In Nigeria. by CHISPAREPARTS(m): 7:52pm On Sep 07, 2019
Getting good auto parts in Nigeria has always been a Nightmare for Car owners and auto technicians and with the Standard organisation of Nigeria refusing to do its job on vetting the quality of auto parts being imported into the country, things have gotten much worse in recent years. Chi spare parts was started to solve this problem by providing car owners and auto technicians with the best auto parts backed up with warranty. At our present stage, we are unable to cover all of the market but we believe sharing some of our knowledge we have gotten over the years would help car owners and technicians in navigating the brutal auto parts market in Nigeria.

Before going to buy parts in Nigeria, always have your exact car model year and country of manufacture at the back of your mind. The country of manufacture is very important. Most cars sold in Nigeria and the rest of the African continent are used cars from different parts of the world (Europe, America, Asia and South Africa). A corolla made in the USA and a corolla made in South Africa both of the same model year do not share the same parts. There are very subtle differences. This also applies to European vehicles. A Mercedes made in Germany and another made in the USA have very subtle differences when it comes to parts.

Auto parts in Nigeria can be broken down into three major types. We would talk about the types and how to select the best parts within each type.

“Tokunbo” parts: These are the most common type of auto parts in Nigeria. They are most times sourced from accident cars and junkyards abroad. Being on your A-game when purchasing this type of auto parts is paramount. For parts like engines and transmissions, always ask for an extended guarantee. The market rule is 1 to 2 weeks for used engines and transmissions but insist on at least a month guarantee and always have the vendor write it on your receipt. You will need this if the engine goes bad before the guarantee period runs out. With the receipt, you can ask for a replacement or a refund. With delicate electrical sensors and parts, its best to avoid used parts if you can they do not work ninety percent of the time but if you insist on getting them then make sure to go with a technician that knows how to use an OBD 2 scan tool, he would install and test if the parts work with his scan tool. Do not pay for this parts if they havent been verified by a mechanic to work. It is extremely difficult to get a refund or a replacement later on after payment have been done on this kind of parts. Suspension parts come with a weeks guarantee as standard. Best to avoid as in most cases they are already worn out and fail almost immediately.

Cheap Chinese knockoffs: This are the most common type of new auto parts in Nigeria. They should be avoided at all costs. They are usually very cheap but cause more damage to your car than they are worth. Cheap Chinese brake pads make noise, create dust, destroy your brake discs and are extremely dangerous to your braking system. Knock off Chinese electrical sensors do not work at all. Cheap Chinese filters can destroy your engine. It makes no sense buying a fake Chinese filter of 500 Naira and then coming to buy a used engine for 350000 Naira later. Are there Good parts from china? Yes they are but parts from companies you cannot find a trace of on the internet or parts in white label boxes should be avoided at all costs. There are also cheap Chinese imitations of parts from well known original equipment manufacturers in the automotive world but this are very easy to spot out. Authentic Bosch auto parts come with barcodes you can use to check for their authenticity whereas the Chinese imitations do not. However if you are not technical, ask for a warranty. Authentic new parts from well known OEMs come with nothing less than three months warranty.

OEM and OE parts: This are the best auto parts to buy. They last very long and are always backed up by warranty. However it is impossible to get engines and transmissions brand new. At chi spare parts, we are working very hard to bring standard engine and transmission rebuilds to the Nigerian market. We are working to get the right partnerships for internal parts of this components before we introduce this into the Nigerian market. Our rebuilt engines and transmissions when we start will come with a 5 year warranty.

In summary, it is always best to get New OEM parts or high end aftermarket parts when you can. You can look to chi spare parts for this auto parts. All our parts are backed up with warranty and we give amazing prices on our auto parts.

You should be able to get the engine mount out once the last bolt is loose if you raised the engine high enough.

Loose the 17mm bolt on the mount. You would need a drop head wrench or a combination spanner for this.

Use the winding jack to jack the engine up. Place the jack directly under the engine sump and place a wooden planck on the jack and jack up the engine.

Car Talk / Rolls Royce Phantom: Weird Air Suspension Problems by CHISPAREPARTS(m): 9:14pm On May 18, 2019
The auto maintenance team at chi spare parts have been working on a Rolls Royce Phantom for quite a while. The car had problems with its air suspension and will not rise up on starting.

We checked all parts of the air suspension system and everything appeared to be in order except some certain portions of the air lines. We noticed leaks. We repaired the leaks on the airline and we were able to get the rear shock absorbers to rise on starting. The front shocks still will not rise. We hooked up a scan tool to see if they were any error codes stored in the air suspension system but everything appeared to be okay. We looked at the live data readings and we noticed that the Electronic ride height control sensors for the first two shocks were giving negative readings. Negative readings on any system point out that something is being taken away from that system and in this case; air was being taken away.

We inspected the front shocks and noticed they were leaking massively from the top. This was so weird and almost impossible to know except the front of the car is lifted up. We have ordered for new shocks and while we wait, we felt we could share our experiences to others. Air suspensions work on the same principles whether its a Lexus or a BMW, the same principles for diagnosis apply to them all. Chi spare parts offer amazing deals on auto parts so do not hesitate to contact us today.

Car Talk / Re: What's Consuming My Fuel (gas) by CHISPAREPARTS(m): 8:41pm On May 01, 2019
oluseg2:

Hello house. Please what might be the possible causes of high fuel consumption in Volvo S60 turbo 2005 model.

I'm currently doing 16.7mpg highway and city combined and this is really discouraging.

I have got the car scanned but the only thing the technician did was to change the fuel pressure sensor despite the fact that the machine displayed error relating to "leakage" which I guess has to do with vaccum.

I have noticed the following which I need advice as to whether can be the reason for the high fuel consumption;

(1) Fuel gauge malfunctioning. Does not get close to maximum even when you fill the tank to the brim.
(2) Fractured/leaking vaccine hose underneath of the vehicle.
(3) Car does not start at first cranking. You will need to crank the engine 2nd time.

If this high fuel consumption issue can be resolved, I will be the happiest person.

Looking forward to your advice. Thanks

I have sent you a PM. I think you would have to get the car scanned and then rediagnosed again. If you wish to do this you can contact us through the number in our signature.

Mist100:
My car kept stalling in traffic. So I scanned but no code. Kazeem advised I change my fuel pump which I did. But I almost ran a bike over because the vehicle kept stalling and loosing break function after the fuel pump change.

I scanned the 5th time and got the P1009 code: dirty oil, Vtc strainer and solenoid. But I just serviced this car last week!!!

Kazeem checked again and advised work on the nozzle and throttle body but I insisted he work with the p1009 code.

After cleaning vtc solenoid, vtc strainer and changing the oil and filter all over again but my car still stalls when i slow down from 100km/h to 20km/h.

Gurus please what else can I do?

Next thing would be to locate our air flow meter and check the wiring integrity. We do this with a multimeter. We use a multimeter because we need to get the exact voltage signals the computer is sending to the unit and cross check our results with a factory wiring diagram.

Car Talk / How To Properly Diagnose And Change An Air Flow Meter (bmw Case Study) by CHISPAREPARTS(m): 7:09pm On Mar 22, 2019
An air flow meter is an integral part of modern internal combustion engines. An air flow meter measures the amount of air coming into the engine through the intake manifold and converts this volume to grams per second. It then sends this information to the ECU and the ECU then calculates the amount of fuel to be injected into the cylinders. A bad air flow meter could increase fuel consumption, cause stalling issues and in rare cases it could cause a crank no start condition.

The following are steps to diagnose a bad air flow meter and replace it using a BMW E60 with the M54 engine as a case study.

Tools needed

OBD scan tool
Digital multimeter
T30 torx wrench
Screw driver

Connect the car to the OBD scan tool and read the fault codes. In this case we had an air flow meter code and our live data test showed no signal from the air flow meter.

Car Talk / Re: How To Replace A Crankshaft Pulley And Conventional V Belts For A Honda Accord by CHISPAREPARTS(m): 8:51pm On Feb 27, 2019
Next step would be to install the belts. This car uses a conventional V belt system which requires some components removed to get the belt off. Newer cars use a serpentine belt and have a belt adjuster on the engine that automatically tensions the belt. To install the belts on this car, you only need to get the alternator and power steering pump a bit loose so you can slide the belt over.

To get the alternator loose, you loosen the 10mm bolt beneath it all the way (do not remove) then slack the 14mm bolt on top of the alternator. The first belt passes through the alternator, compressor and the crankshaft pulley.

The rest can be found on our website at https://chispareparts.com.ng/how-to-replace-a-crankshaft-pulley-and-conventional-v-belts-for-a-honda-accord/
