THE Oyo State government has awarded the contract for the construction of five prototype public toilets, Akala Comfort Stations, at the cost of about N25 million.

From left, Minister of State for Finance, Mr. Aderemi Babalola; Rivers State deputy governor, Mr. Tele Ikuru; Imo State governor, Mr. Ikedi Ohakim; Sokoto State governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko and Oyo State governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, at the National Economic Council meeting in Abuja, on Tuesday.

Areas where the toilets will be sited include the House of Assembly Complex, Ojoo, Iwo Road; Labaowo/Ogunpa and Ifeleye/Ogunpa.

Speaking at a ministerial press conference in Ibadan, recently, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Alhaji Majekodunmi Aborode, named 2009 as “the year of environmental Eeforcement galore.”

According to him, the mission statement was to keep Oyo State beautiful and clean as obtained in Lagos State.

The commissioner said the state government had invited private sector investors to build modern international trailer park at the cost of N1 billion.

He added that Mojat Consult Limited had been contracted by the state government to work with the urban and regional planning board of the ministry so as to generate more revenue.

Gov Akala may not be your ideal governor but is anyone suggesting N 5 million ( £20,000 ) is too much to build a well designed public toilet .

If one has to be realistic and fair, a public toilet has to be constructed to a different standard to your average domestic lavatory. Remember it has to be housed in a newly constructed structure and all the required services i.e electricity, water, clean water, foul discharge drainage have to be connected.

When you take all these into consideration you'll begin to appreciate maybe the cost is reasonable after all.

I dont really think the 5 Million Naira per toilet is grossly inflated
We will have to see the project upon completion to determine whether it is worth it or not
The element of inflation attached to the amount will be minute. . .Does anyone know if maintenance costs are factored in?
Re: Alao Akala Awards N25m For 5 Public Toilets. by JustGood(m): 9:51am On Jul 16, 2009
I bet they wont think about budgeting for the maintenance.

In 1 year, the toilets will have turned into eye sores. lipsrsealed
Re: Alao Akala Awards N25m For 5 Public Toilets. by SamMilla1(m): 9:54am On Jul 16, 2009
what about maintainance ?

the project will be abandoned after building them.

The highlighted part is what i expected you guys to focus on. Sure 5 mill may not be even enough to build a standard toilet abi!!
The point is that this is Nigeria. All they would do is to provide mobile toilets and situate them there. VOILLA, you have a public toilet.
Freaking thieves.

N5m per toilet, He is the most incredible!!, out of Ibadan,

The only Polytechnic in Oyo State is on strike and he has also increased the tuition fee to about 200%. That is what he can do for education.

I guess he is half-baked in education, that's why he neva values it. That N25m would have been useful in building another tertiary education (Polytechnic) for the state.

Useless human being

Guys,
I dont think this is too much,  I am an Architect and the going BCI rates for Nigeria now is between 35,000 to 50,000 per square meter. So assuming we have about 8 water closets and the supporting lavatory areas, the building could easily be up to a 100 square meters.

Given the above I can easily see how each building could cost between 3.5m and 5.0m. Dont forget you have to allow for contractor's profit and other service costs.

Some people should just relax and dont conclude just yet
Even though i have never liked this Akala of a guy, i still dont want to conclude the project is grossly inflated. . . .
The R&M engineering team in my office refurbished a public toilet facility recently and i know how much we charged our client
We need to see the plans, drawings, designs and facility info plus a project completion layout before we can judge whether it was inflated or not!
My own worry, is will the contractors execute the project?
Nigeria is famed for awarding contracts which gets abandoned after a fair bit of work or even never get off ground! grin

You sound like the Akala of a guy is your uncle, otherwise, I will never understand the rational behind constructing a place where people go to take a dump at the tune of 5m naira.
It is ridiculous to even give such a cheap and dubious idea benefit of doubt.

I wouldav preferred the money to be spent on other pressing issues like combating crimes and educational services. . . . .
Most Nigerians are not civilized enought to effectively utilise public toilets. . . .They will fuc.k the concept all up! grin

I smell fraud. Who says its not inflation constructing 5 toilets for 25m. How much is the toilet. If you talk of 500 tolet for that amount i will understand. Except they want to build Diamond toilet. Since its public toilet it should not cost much.
Re: Alao Akala Awards N25m For 5 Public Toilets. by eShegz(m): 1:49pm On Jul 16, 2009
Personally, i don't think 5 Mill per toilet, and i mean a standard toilet is not really inflated. My take is that public toilet apparently is the last thing the good people of Oyo State need now!
Most of the roads in that state is an eye sore. Education is being left to rot, security of lives of the populace is still a big challenge. Who will forget in a hurry how armed robbers practically sacked banks in the metropolis!
If the governor need to provide job for the boys, it will be worth the while if he could look at the areas that will direct impact the lives of the populace as mentioned above "like Fashola"

Personally, I don't think 5 Million Naira is too much to construct a Public Toilet. It depends on the kind of materials that will be used to build the toilets and the facilities that will be available there. Fellow Nairalanders, have you thought about the sinks, basins, sockets and lighting, the suck-Away, electrical wiring, plumbing and beautification of the toilet sorroundings cry cry    I am not Akala's relative and I don't want to know him, but I think Oyo State needs public toilets. Let us watch as they start building the toilets. Do you know how much it costs to dig Suck-Aways these days? What about workmanship fees? Let us be realisitic, mates sad sad

The problem with facilities in Nigeria is the issue of maintenance. We have a very bad maintenance culture cry cry It is very disheartening when I see Nigerians treating and using public infrastructure anyhow. Look at the Parks in Britain and the facilities in them. These facilities have been there for decades and sometime centuries, but they are still working and functional. They are also maintained yearly by council workers. In Nigeria, we dont care about facilities and vandals are having a good time down here. Have we also realized that the Public Toliets that will be constructed in Ibadan will need to have constant water supply for flushing? That means a borehole will be constructed near the toilets. What about toilet rolls? Think deeply, please.

Nigerians need a lot of re-orientation about our attitude to Public Facilities and Infrastructure. My advice to Akala is that he should monitor the construction of the toilets and ensure that they are up to the required standards. No chance for contract scams. Cheers.

No one denies the fact that public washrooms are needed.
5M for a washroom is over prices, how many plot of land is used for one and how much is the plot of land?
Common, let us be real
