men i've been thinking of this issue now for days. i've been using windows all my life all of a sudden i decided to do something crazy and i picked up a linux cd and installed it. i run both on my pc. so far i haven't achieved much. You know linux might never catch up with windows in the number of customers why? linux generally isn't user friendly i can site examples. i have about three modems a motorola l6 on entering linux it detected it easily i was happy i said linux must be very powerful next i found my way to internet connection for me to pick my modem i saw
"/tty/ bla bla bla. my point exactly if it were windows it would just say motorola l6 although in the fardware manager it showed it but i don't even know any of the modems cos it gives different slah options linux got to step up and even the attitude of those using it is one of the things killing it. it safe secured but nearly immposible i dont even know where the sql server is on it. it didn't detect my vga card properly so games hang even to update it i don't know i use red hat version9.2 help needed

lilo aka Rob Levin was one of the key people behind the freenode IRC network, on which all of Ubuntu’s IRC chat rooms are offered. Its the first IRC network I ever used, and the one I use the most. Rob was the driving force behind freenode, and freenode is a free service. Ergo, he’s had to live a pretty simple life - not a “rich” life by any means.

lilo passed away earlier in the day. I came to know this through a friend’s blog. Looks like he was killed in a hit-and-run road accident while riding his bike.

I once chatted with him, and he came across as a very nice, humble guy. I even wrote on my blog asking folks to lend him a helping hand, and became a freenode donor myself. I strongly believe that every one of us should pitch in and help support those who dedicate their lives to making ours better.

Thank you lilo, and thanks to all the folks who work on Linux, Ubuntu, and everything that is free and good.

lilo will certainly be missed. My heartfelt condolences to his family. They too have paid a price for the freedom I enjoy, and they’ll be missing him far more than I do.

Lazy windows user just because u did not understand how linux rendered your phone so that is why you conclude linux may never catch up windows. I use a windows mobile 2003se smartphone,  windows xp does not even have a native driver 4 it as a usb device not 2 talk of detecting my modem plus windows mediaplayer does not see it, you know copy to device option. You call vactive wap a dial up? So stop criticising am a windows power user and have used linux for quite a while now. Have worked with 98 upward both as an engineer and desktop publisher and knows their limitations. Stop criticising linux.      Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue Tongue Embarrassed Lips sealed Undecided Kiss

If it were 2 be error message by the browser it will still be good at least i'll know am on the right track. Xp keeps asking for the driver which i fed the companion cd into d cd rom it said my driver was loaded and i was happy for 2 ask for the driver every time i connect d phone 2 d system which if i tried repeating d above step it gave me some kind of rubbish error i search for the modem manually from d device manager but all was just a nightmare. ok lets start over go to control panel and remove any thing that looks like your phone cos i think you might need to querry the modem from the phone and modem option in control panel, if that doesn't work then do a fresh installation of your phone driver. if your fone uses a usb cable make sure the port u use would be the one u'll be using throughout. insert your phone and manually locate the driver after installing, then querry the modem from the phone and modem option in control panel to confirm if it was successful

adewale, congrats on d cd. ubuntu is gnome based so ure stuck wit it unless u use kubuntu which is kde based.
i hope u guys av started to browse on your pcs?
if u want to knw d device address 4 your phone, der r diff methods 4 each 4m of connectivity.
for serial port, it is /dev/ttyS0 which is d same as COM1

Re: Linux or Windows Operating System?

,  on windows. ttyS1 is COM2 on win, etc.

4 a usb device, it's /dev/ttyUSB0 if it's d first or only usb device. it can b USB[1,2,3,etc] depending on kind of device. a cool way of checking is typing dis command 'dmesg | grep USB' , u should c d exact address of d device. bluetooth and ir r not so straightforward. wen i get 2 use my pc, i hope 2 shed more lite. ps bear wit me. happy computing

@ Afo, I've left a reply concerning your phone on the Ubuntu thread.

I recommend installing compiz/xgl on Ubuntu. It looks just fucking amazing guys! I still think there are other things that should be done to make it look cooler, but I just love the Cube and the Wobbly stuff, plus the transperency it offers.

Any tips?

More desktops to come:)

Now that is cool. Its such a pity Ubuntu cannot work seamlessly on the intel macs cos I want to get me a macbook. I might have to leave Ubuntu for Fedora or Suse who support the macbook without much stress.
